Oct. 25 (CNA) Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan has been named as the fifth best city in the world to visit in 2018 by travel guide book publisher Lonely Planet.

Kaohsiung was among Lonely Planet's list of 10 top cities in the world that its experts recommend travelers visit in 2018.

The list was published Tuesday as part of Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2018 package that also identified the world's 10 top countries and 10 top regions to visit and 10 best travel values.

In the "Top Cities" list, Spain's Seville was ranked at the top, followed by Detroit in the United States, Canberra in Australia, and Hamburg in Germany.

From sixth to 10th were Antwerp in Belgium, Matera in Italy, San Juan in Puerto Rico, Guanajuato in Mexico and Oslo in Norway.

"Kaohsiung is surging with possibilities: visit before the world gets wind of it," Lonely Planet said in the description of the city accompanying the list that particularly highlighted the city's transition from an industrial port to a cultural hub.

"Warehouses by the harbor are morphing into galleries and theaters. World-class architecture is sprouting along the shore, from a beautiful public library to a spectacular concert venue that, when ready, should be among the best in Asia," Lonely Planet wrote.

"The cultural calendar is packed full of exciting new festivals, and young chefs are injecting fresh ideas into southern Taiwanese cooking," it said.

Other Kaohsiung highlights mentioned were the "spectacular" cruise terminal and light-rail system that are taking shape, and a new 88-meter "Eye of the Mountain" skywalk in the Xiaogangshan Recreation Area, from which hikers can view the Taiwan Strait.

In a statement previewing the article, Lonely Planet writer Piera Chen, who prepared the section on Kaohsiung, described the city this way: "Wherever you go, whether by metro or the city's burgeoning fleet of public bikes, Kaohsiung greets with a laid-back maritime charm."

Kaohsiung has been named the fifth-best city in the world to visit next year by travel guide book publisher Lonely Planet.

Kaohsiung was among Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 cities in the world it recommends travelers visit next year.

The list was published on Tuesday as part of the publisher’s Best in Travel 2018 package, which also identified the world’s top 10 countries, regions and best value destinations for travelers.

The top cities list included Seville, Spain, at No. 1, followed by Detroit, Michigan, Canberra, and Hamburg, Germany. In sixth place was Antwerp, Belgium, followed by Matera, Italy, San Juan, Guanajuato, Mexico, and Oslo.

“Kaohsiung is surging with possibilities: Visit before the world gets wind of it,” Lonely Planet said. “Warehouses by the harbor are morphing into galleries and theaters. Lonely Planet Names Its Top 10 Cities to Visit in 2018

Travelers beginning to eye their calendars for 2018 got some trip suggestions from Lonely Planet on Tuesday.

The 13th annual Best in Travel lists from the magazine included the 10 best cities to visit in the upcoming year.

“Whether they’ve been overlooked, are celebrating milestones next year or have crept up on our radar lately, they all offer compelling reasons to go soon,” Lonely Planet’s U.S. managing editor Alex Howard said of the cities included. “The landscape of cities is changing faster than ever, and even familiar cities can surprise travelers with each visit.”

Seville, Spain topped their list of destination cities for next year. An artistic city that received a profile boost as the setting of many Game of Thrones scenes, Seville has transformed over the last 10 years.

Detroit took second place. The city has been undergoing its own renaissance, fueled by new investments in business and housing and long term commitments to community growth from companies like JPMorgan. Fortune‘s Matt Heimer recently spoke with Jamie Dimon, the bank’s CEO, about its efforts in Detroit.
And the investments are starting to show, said Lonely Planet‘s Howard.

“New stadiums, hotels, streetcars and parks, alongside distilleries and art galleries, are evidence that Motor City is back in business, fueled by a creative and tenacious energy that’s palpable throughout the city,” he said.

Canberra, Australia; Hamburg, Germany; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Antwerp, Belgium; and Matera, Italy take spots three through seven on the list.

Lonely Planet named San Juan, Puerto Rico as number eight on the list, despite the heavy damage the city sustained during Hurricane Maria. Howard said that they made the decision to include San Juan before the storm, but chose to keep the destination despite many residents still living without electricity or clean drinking water.

“The reasons we named San Juan one of the best cities to visit in 2018 are still as strong as ever. Many local businesses and hotels are already reopening, and we’re confident that this progress will continue steadily into the new year,” Howard told CNN.

Guanajuato, Mexico and Oslo, Norway round out the list at nine and ten, respectively.

2017 is slowly coming to a close, which means it's time to start brainstorming your travel plans for next year.

Lonely Planet just released its Best in Travel for 2018, a comprehensive guide that includes the top 10 cities, countries, and regions to visit in the new year, as well as best value destinations.

Below are Lonely Planet's picks for the top 10 cities to visit in 2018.

From the Italian cave city of Matera to the colorful Mexican town of Guanajuato, here are the destinations that should make it onto your travel bucket list next year.

10. Oslo, Norway


2018 is a great year to visit Norway's capital. Not only is Oslo celebrating 50 years of marriage between their king and queen, the city's opera house is also turning 10 years old. That means there will be plenty of cultural events, as well as performances and concerts.

Architecture buffs will love this city; Oslo has seen numerous contemporary buildings spring up in recent years.


9. Guanajuato, Mexico


Guanajuato is both stunning and culturally relevant. The former silver-mining town served as inspiration for the fictional Land of the Dead, a city in the upcoming Pixar movie "Coco."

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is made up of peaceful squares, narrow alleyways, and brightly-colored buildings and churches that sit in a valley surrounded by mountains.

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico


San Juan has it all: pristine beaches, farm-to-table dining, vibrant nightlife, and a buzzing art scene made up of galleries, museums, and murals that cover the city's walls.

Visitors can spend hours wandering through cobblestone alleyways framed by pastel-painted buildings and luscious greenery. The island was hit hard by hurricane Maria, but rebuilding efforts are underway.


7. Matera, Italy


Extensive renovations have led to a renaissance for this 9,000-year-old cave city in Southern Italy. Perched on a rocky outcrop, Matera is made up of stone dwellings and a maze of monasteries, churches, and caves.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is still somewhat of a hidden gem, but that won't be the case for long. Hotels, restaurants, and bars are popping up in anticipation of Matera's designation as the European Capital of Culture for 2019; all the more reason to plan your trip for 2018.


6. Antwerp, Belgium


Antwerp is highlighting its roots and its copious examples of Baroque style with Antwerp Baroque 2018, a celebration of architecture, art, and the city's most famous artist, Peter Paul Rubens.

The celebration will bring together some of the most prominent Flemish masters of today. The program includes everything from parades to exhibitions to streets art and concerts.




5. Kaohsiung, Taiwan


You might not have heard of Kaohsiung, but this port city is teeming with activities. For a true Taiwan experience, explore the Liuhe Night Market or take a ride on the modern light-rail system.

The walkways and cafes dotting the banks of the Love River are perfect for strolls and afternoon coffee. Outdoorsy types can head to Xiaogang Shan Recreation Area for hiking and unparalleled views of the Taiwan Strait from the new Eye of the Mountain Skywalk.


4. Hamburg, Germany


Hamburg's new 790 million euro Elbphilharmonie concert hall is reason enough to visit this northern Germany city in 2018. The hall took years to complete, but its striking glass walls and contrasting brick bottom are a sight to behold.

The hall is conveniently located the in HafenCity port area, which stretches along the Elbe River and is home to riverfront bars, bustling nightlife, and much more.


3. Canberra, Australia


There's a lot happening in Canberra this year. For the first time ever, the capital city will host a Test cricket match between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Manuka Oval. Canberra's Australian War Memorial will also host the 100-year anniversary of the World War I armistice.

Outside of those events, the city is full of national landmarks, as well as plenty of memorable cultural and gastronomic experiences.


2. Detroit, Michigan


In recent years, Detroit has transformed from a heap of abandoned sites to a hip city that boasts trendy galleries, hotels, distilleries, and bike shops. There's a hockey and basketball arena downtown and three new parks that will help extend the riverfront trail.

Plus, getting to all of Detroit's hotspots is easy thanks to the QLine streetcar.

1. Seville, Spain

Over the past 10 years, Seville has transformed itself. Once a traffic-congested metropolis resting on its historical laurels, Seville has bloomed into a city of bicycles and trams, keen to reinvigorate its artistic past. The metamorphosis hasn’t gone unnoticed. The capital of Andalucía will host the 31st European Film Awards in 2018, and showcases its good looks in the TV fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Adding colour to an ongoing artistic renaissance, Seville is in the midst of celebrating the 400th anniversary of homegrown Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, with half a dozen one-of-a-kind expositions continuing into 2018.



2. Detroit, USA

After decades of neglect, Detroit is rolling again. It’s like the whole place is caffeine-buzzed, freewheeling in ideas. Young creative types jump-started the scene when they began transforming the crazy-huge slew of abandoned buildings into distilleries, bike shops and galleries. This sparked fresh public works, such as the just-opened hockey and basketball arena downtown, and the QLine streetcar that gives easy access to city hot spots. More are coming: three new parks will extend the riverfront trail (ideal for two-wheeling via the new 43-station bike-share scheme in the greater downtown area), plus groovy hotels will emerge from an old wig shop and a forlorn parking lot.



3. Canberra, Australia

Criminally overlooked Canberra packs a big punch for such a small city. National treasures are found round almost every corner and exciting new boutique precincts have emerged, bulging with gastronomic highlights and cultural must-dos. This is the first year that Canberra will host a Test cricket match at the picturesque Manuka Oval, and later in 2018 the Australian War Memorial will take centre stage as it hosts the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice. Significantly, Canberra is establishing a permanent Reconciliation Day into the state’s holiday calendar from 2018 onwards, to symbolise commitment to tolerance between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.


4. Hamburg, Germany

Its completion seemed to take longer than sitting through the entire cycle of Wagner’s Ring operas, but the stunning new €790 million Elbphilharmonie concert hall was worth every extra year of delay. The glass top shimmers like crystalline sails while the base reflects the brick aesthetic of the surrounding historic and oh-so-walkable HafenCity port area. From here, alluringly accessible Hamburg radiates out along its vast harbour and the Elbe River. Surprises abound: three-season riverfront beach bars, nightlife that’s among Europe’s best, and low-rise charms that reward wanderers who use the city’s dozens of old steeples as compass points.

A massive arts centre and 100,000 sq m cultural and music complex, complete with wave-lapped walkways and and a night market, is emerging on Kaohsiung’s balmy harbourfront – Taiwan’s showcase for experimental architecture from around the world. Adding to this will be a spectacular cruise terminal, for those favouring an Odyssean approach to the port city. A sleek light-rail system links these monuments to the rest of Kaohsiung. 6. Antwerp, Belgium

Once northern Europe’s greatest city, today Antwerp is one of its best-kept secrets. Flanders’ unofficial capital is laden with historic riches and home to world-class arts and design, and this year it’s showing its cultural chops with a celebration of its Baroque heyday. Inspired by the city’s most famous resident, Rubens, Antwerp Baroque 2018 will feature Flemish Masters rubbing shoulders with modern talent in a calendar that spans parades, concerts, street art, multimedia shows and workshops. Not that Antwerp’s residents need an excuse to unleash their creativity: the city, especially its former docks, is flush with pop-up bars, farm-to-fork joints and architectural showstoppers.



7. Matera, Italy

A crown of honey-stoned houses perched above a ravine, Matera has knockout looks. But that’s only half the story: snaking beneath the surface is a labyrinth of cave dwellings, churches and monasteries that date back over 9000 years – making it one of the oldest living cities in the world. Largely restored from near ruin, Matera’s now capitalising on its cavernous appeal, with hotels, restaurants and bars carving out a scene as cool as their rock-hewn walls. There’s a flurry of events planned ahead of its stint as a European Capital of Culture for 2019, so visit now before this underground destination emerges into the limelight.



8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is a place where old meets new, where the city’s colonial past meshes comfortably with an emerging modern urbanity. Old San Juan is a walled enclave with cobblestoned roads, leafy plazas, and historic churches and forts. Beyond the walls, modern San Juan is draped with murals, and its cadre of museums and galleries form a dynamic art scene. In recent years, many innovative restaurants have opened, with farm-to-table eateries beckoning foodies and casual diners alike. The exuberant nightlife – dance clubs, lounges, bars, casinos – has long been a highlight, as have San Juan’s dazzling beaches. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, becoming the biggest storm to impact the island in 89 years. While San Juan did not escape the wrath of the hurricane, there's no doubt that it will rebuild and remain the enchanting city it's always been.

From silver mining to the silver screen, the small city of Guanajuato in the central highlands of Mexico punches above its weight when it comes to topical appeal. The wealth produced by the local seams of silver created a visually stunning cityscape of ornate churches, pretty squares and colourful houses, spread out over the verdant valley in which Guanajuato sits. This natural and man-made beauty caught the eye of Pixar producers who used the city as the real-life basis for their animated Land of the Dead in new movie Coco.



10. Oslo, Norway

For many years, Norway’s capital has been eclipsed by its stylish Scandi neighbours. But Oslo, along with the rest of the nation, is set to toast a landmark event: in 2018, Norway’s beloved king and queen celebrate the 50th year of their marriage. Expect fanfare and pageantry aplenty, along with a packed calendar of events – civic, culinary and cultural. As a bonus, Oslo’s landmark Opera House is marking its 10th birthday in 2018 with a celebratory season of concerts and performances, so you really couldn’t pick a better year to visit.
