Continuing the series of newly beautified & activated alleys in Grand Rapids, here's "Ethel B. Coe Way" - a formerly nameless alleyway off of Monroe Ave. named in honor of a local activist and artist. It's another in the city's "Women's Way" alley activation initiative -

Here is some more info on Spectrum Health's new 8-story, 160,000 SF office building - part of its planned Center for Health Transformation and Innovation (CTI). This would be built adjacent to their recently-purchased Brass Works building in Monroe North, with a pedestrian bridge connecting them. The article is mostly behind a paywall, but there is a rendering that I think hasn't been shared on here yet. The project goes before the Planning Commission next week -

I love this view of the Grand Rapids skyline. It looks so much more substantial from the west, as opposed to from the south or north, because you can better see & understand the array of taller buildings along the river. Amway Grand Plaza in the center -

That is a good angle. Could use a few new 400+ footers though!

Too true! It's high-time to kick things into a higher gear. River House looks especially lonely. I think it will be a while still, especially with the decreased demand for office space (and I'm guessing hotel space). Maybe an all-residential tower?

Speaking of housing, this might be a possible conversion... the article is paywalled, but you can get the gist from the title. AS WMU and Cooley move through their separation, this ~ 109,000 SF, 5-story building in downtown is the largest bit of real estate to be put on the market in the past 6 months. An educational / institutional-to-office conversion is far more feasible than a change to a residential use, but I'm not sure how practical, given the current market demand.

Plainfield Charter Township -

A final draft of the "Reimagine Plainfield" plan has been released for public comment. The proposed master plan focuses on significant updates to the Plainfield Avenue corridor over the next 20 years, including:
  • Developing three small downtown areas / town centers
  • Increasing green space
  • Improving walkability

The plan studies transforming vacant and tired properties into mixed-use, multi-story buildings. I pulled some visual highlights below, and you can view the entire plan here -

Kelloggsville / Kentwood

The new Kelloggsville Central Elementary School is under construction. Normally, I probably wouldn't bother sharing a suburban project like this, but I thought the brick detailing throughout, and especially in the interior atrium, was really cool and not something you typically see in a new public school. GR does have quite the substantial downtown most of the mass are in midrise with the exception of the riverfront only the westward view or street views do it proper justice.
