I've heard rumours that the vacant Bellanca Building in downtown Yellowknife is close to being sold. Hopefully something positive will come out of it if this is the case.

It sold for 1.4 million. Pretty cheap, but it is old and needs lots of money to upgrade.

20 years ago it was in not great shape. But I suspect that it could be converted. But why, unless they get a lot of Federal Help.

Might have to be if there's a caveat that they cannot use it as an office building.

It just seems that there is little demand for office space, or maybe just that this building is not attractive to office space seekers. Or both.

Iqaluit is getting $214 million from the federal government to fix its water infrastructure after the Nunavut capital’s water was contaminated with fuel twice in the last six months. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the funding at a virtual press conference.

They do need the investment.

Rankin Inlet is maxing out their water system as well and needs a major overhaul.

No vacancy
It’s been called a crisis for over a decade, but the Yukon’s housing situation has never been this bad. How can the territory get runaway housing costs under control?

Michel Proulx Sep. 6, 2022
Housing prices are at or near all-time highs in the Yukon, rental units have never been harder to find and a record number of people are homeless.

The housing crisis is nothing new to the territory — it’s been described as a crisis for more than a decade — but it’s never been this bad, says Kwanlin Dün First Nation Chief Doris Bill.

“I’m hearing a lot of stories about people couch surfing and … living in very not-so-safe situations,” she says.

She adds that many people, especially since the pandemic, have been moving to the Yukon.

“And it’s created a situation in the city where … we’re at capacity,” she says. “We don’t have any more houses left.”

Well, for one, they could get rid of their height limit of.... 25 metres. I'm not saying Whitehorse needs skyscrapers but for the largest city in the territories by population, I'm not sure a few 50-70 metre towers would hurt them.

I don’t think the Yukon needs to worry about densification just yet.

That seems pretty steep. I thought one could buy a house in Yellowknife for a moose and a bucket of bait. Throw in a canoe and the Bellanca is yours.

If the Bellanca bldg cannot be used as office space, I can only presume it will become residential?

I'm not saying Whitehorse needs skyscrapers or anything, but Yellowknife has a few midrises and it hasn't hurt their city. If anything it'd make more sense to have midrises in Whitehorse instead of Yellowknife as there's a greater housing demand + migration rate in the Yukon.

This has been a parking lot for as long as I can remember. Right next to the Yellowknife inn.

It's a very exciting proposal. Hopefully it can help revitalize that street somewhat. It's probably the roughest part of downtown.
