MMXIX~The City Of Trees & Boise River Greenbelt Photo Spectacular

Les Bois, Les Bois! Voyez Les Bois!
|Boise's French History and how the city earned its name|
1774~Three Frenchmen lived in a Native American village along the river and mapped out the area and nicknamed the river, Cotu du Bois, riverbank of trees. Later in the 1820's, French fur trappers set up shop in the valley along this river lined with trees which they named La Rivière Boisée; the wooded river. The headwaters rise in the sacred Sawtooth Mountains.

In 1833, Captain Bonneville's expedition with French Canadian explorers crested a bluff east of the valley with a view of the verdant wooded river and shouted with joy "Les Bois! Les Bois! Voyez Les Bois!

Later on, The Oregon Trail wound through Boise and one of the richest gold strikes in the nations history boomed up in the mountains above Boise in the 1860's and the Federal Government began construction of the Assay Building in 1870.

Fort Boise was established in 1863 by the US Army and Boise showed Lewiston who was boss and became the capital city in 1864.

During the 1880's and 1890's, Basque sheepherders and miners made their way to Boise and the area now has one of the largest populations of Basques outside of Europe.

This year The Boise River Greenbelt turns 50 years old. I have always wanted to post a photo thread of The Greenbelt and this is the perfect year for an almost year long thread of this world class leisure and commuter path along both sides of The Boise River that runs through the heart of the city.

I will also use this thread to post expanded construction updates and photos of Boise throughout 2019. If anyone else wants to post photos please go ahead and do it.

Cheers to the Mountain West from your Northwest neighbor.

Peace and Love
