I wonder if they'll relocate the plaza globe to it's rightful place between the pools(that's practically where it was on the plaza of the WTC). Right now it's at Battery Park.

^ I always find it a little ironic how quiet and empty that new concourse is now. In a few years, it will be streaming with people on their way to and from BPC and the World Financial Center.

WTC waterfalls ready for 10th anniversary of 9/11: PA

BY Douglas Feiden
August 20th 2009

The two giant waterfalls that will thunder into the abyss where the World Trade Center once stood will open in time for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, the Port Authority vowed Wednesday.

Described as the biggest manmade falls in North America, the twin torrents will drop 46 feet in two stages into two reflecting pools in the inner void that will be the heart and soul of Ground Zero.

"It's not a pit anymore," said Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward. "With all the progress that is taking place on the site, it's not even Ground Zero anymore."

In testimony before the City Council, Ward said the falls and fountains will be fully flowing by 2011 - and that 75% of the swamp white oak trees that will grace the Memorial Plaza will be planted.

It will be a somber place for mourning and remembrance: Each cascade will drop 40,000 gallons of water per minute into twin reflecting pools in the footprints of the twin towers - and each pool will hold some 165,000 gallons of water.

The subterranean Memorial Museum, which will display 9/11 artifacts and relate the horrors of the worst day in U.S. history, will open in 2012, Ward said.

The news about "Reflecting Absence," the memorial's official name, came moments after City Councilman Alan Gerson (D-Manhattan) had tough words about delays that have plagued the site: "It's incomprehensible and unforgivable that not a single project at the World Trade Center site has been completed," he said.

^By that time, the FT should be no less than halfway up and 4WTC even higher, with hopefully some cladding done.

Question about Plaza deck

Is the plaza deck being poured in two layers? It looks like they are pouring concrete today right on top of the same area that was done two weeks ago.

'Last Column's' return: Beam that became 9/11 memorial comes back to WTC site Monday

Rendering of the last column, which was removed from the World Trade Center, at the site of the museum at the World Trade Center.

BY Doug Feiden
August 21st 2009

The last soaring column that stood proud at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks - and became a beloved symbol of defiance in the face of terror - is finally coming home.

After more than seven years in a hangar at Kennedy Airport, the mighty steel beam - emblazoned with engine company and police precinct insignias - will be returned to Ground Zero on Monday, the Daily News has learned.

The 58-ton, 36-foot-tall column is so gargantuan in size that its permanent new home, the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum, will literally be erected around it, officials in charge of the rebuilding say.

"What makes the Last Column so powerful and authentic is that it was the most makeshift of all the memorials as people spontaneously left firehouse patches, police logos and union stickers to honor the victims," said Museum President Joe Daniels.

Visitors to the subterranean museum will see the shorthand of mourners, who marked their losses in industrial spray paint: "PAPD 37," at the very top, refers to the number of Port Authority cops massacred.

"NYPD 23" and "FDNY 343" recalls the Finest and Bravest who gave their lives.

"This is ultimately a sign of rebirth," said Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward.

"We are bringing back the Last Column of the old World Trade Center as we erect the first columns of the new World Trade Center."

Officially identified as Column 1001-B, the steel beam, one of 47 that held up the South Tower, was quickly plastered with Mass cards, rosary beads, flags, photos of missing innocents, letters from children to parents who would never be coming home.

"It's a girder like no other girder on Earth," said Jimmy Hurley, 57, an ironworker from Staten Island who watched as it was cut down on May 28, 2002, marking the end to the world's most heart-wrenching recovery effort.

"It's an icon where loving remembrances were left for lost loved ones," said Lou Mendes, a former top city official who ran clean-up operations.

After an eight-month effort to cart away 1.8 million tons of rubble, the Last Column was carried off the site to the skirl of bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace."

Preservationists lovingly restored it, as if it were a Rembrandt, in JFK's Hangar 17.

Swaddled in plastic and covered in a giant climate-controlled box, it will be quietly returned to the site at sunrise Monday with a police and fire escort.

This progress is very progressive. Something i'm questioning is how are the memorial pools going to look blue? What material is the names being ingraved in and is it going to be in a specific color?

They really have been making great progress there. Contrary to what most of the public believes, it's not really ground zero anymore.

9/11 Memorial Preview Site Opens Near WTC

The exhibition site at 20 Vesey Street.

Thursday, August 27, 2009, by Pete

Visiting the big dig at the World Trade Center site can be a bit confusing, so those in charge of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum have opened a 9/11 Memorial Preview Site nearby to give the curious throngs of onlookers a place to see what's to come, eventually. The exhibition at 20 Vesey Street is a long block away from where steel is rising for the Freedom Tower (One World Trade Center). It's outfitted by the same team that will be handling the exhibition spaces inside the museum, the designs of which were recently revealed.

The space is simply laid out but full of information about the WTC, both before and after the 9/11 attacks. Centrally displayed is a large model of the WTC site (at least what it might look like), with videos from Project Rebirth playing on a screen above. Also on display is a Statue of Liberty replica that used to stand outside a firehouse on Eighth Avenue near Times Square, and was covered with mementos in the dark days following that sunny September morning. Given that this is a city of commerce, assorted merchandise is available that will help to support the construction of the Memorial and Museum, including the official t-shirt for the big event coming up on September 10, Fashion's Night Out, as well as trinkets from the NYPD and FDNY.

Models, renders and video show visitors what's to come at the WTC site.

Project Rebirth crafted a four-minute film especially for visitors to the Preview Site;
included are interviews with nine people directly affected by the attacks of 9/11.

The space is directly across the street from St. Paul's Chapel and the WTC site.

The column was secured into the construction site and will be secured in a climate controlled box.

Officially identified as column 1001-B, the beam was one of 47 that supported the South Tower.

^ In addition, when will the steel go up over the Path line to bring everything up to plaza level?

I have to imagine that that procedure would be a sensitive one. I’m sure there’s a timeline, but it’ll have to be done carefully and certainly the right way. One of the parts of the project that can do without rush.
