It just looks a lot nicer, to be honest.

Today, seems so drab and dead, around there, other than cars in the Superstore or cars driving to the market.

A Park upgrade would be great.

Could also use some new highrise developments, with street retail, to inject some new density to the area, and some life to streets around there.

Yeah, I can remember a time that seems not-so-long-ago (but really was like 30 years ago) where that park was "no man's land". Back when that area was most frequented by hoo.... errrrr... sex workers and dru.... errr... those who's business is selling substances in the underground market. So these upgrades (to me) signify a clear break from those times, a true step forward for the neighborhood that has now become so much more vibrant and and walkable (safe).

Yeah, I remember that time too, though I was quite young. I think the G7 summit back in the 1990s was key to first cleaning this area up. They didn't want G7 leaders touring the peninsula and see hookers/drug dealers on corners right there in the south end on Hollis. Incredible that downtown was neglected so much for so long, that this was "fine" for mayors, councillors, and Nova Scotia Governments, and it took Bill Clinton and Tony Blair coming in order to get them to do something about it.

Neat! I just walked past here today, along the sidewalk on the north side of the park. Those plantings in the photo must be tiny trees that have grown into the full-sized beasts that I was dodging ice-bombs from this morning!

Hey that's a great observation! Hadn't considered it, but now we know how old those trees are.

Here's an image from Bing Maps to illustrate:

Another interesting part of that photo is how South and Hollis looked in 1931 at the site of the present-day development.

Again, the Bing Maps view:

Where did you find that old picture OldDartmouthMark? I work in a building just a bit further up Barrington and would love to see what it looked like back then.

It's actually from the NS Archives photo from above:

https://novascotia.ca/archives/mccul...ives.asp?ID=80

I just blew it up to max size and screen grabbed the part of the image I wanted to show.

There are lots of old images of Barrington on the archives site. You can search for "Barrington", but if you don't find what you're looking for don't give up as there are other photos that don't come up directly with that search. Browse around a little and you might find it.

If you let me know which building it is, I (or somebody else on here) might have already found it before. So that's another option.

I also found this downloadable PDF from HRM: Heritage Inventory Sheet – South Barrington HCD

It doesn't have pics from back in the day, but does have historical information - maybe your building may be listed on it?
