City Looking to Add More Fun in Coney Island With New RFP

Quote:
Coney Island will be getting another amusement park if the city has its way.

As a part of the city’s redevelopment plan for the Brooklyn neighborhood, the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the city’s Department of Parks & Recreation released a request for proposals, or RFP, today for the creation and operation of new rides, games and other attractions in the entertainment area.

The RFP includes 150,000 square feet of space on five vacant parcels along the boardwalk between West 10th and West 16th Streets. Proposals are due on March 17. The city is hoping the new amusements will be opened by summer 2018.

“Coney Island just keeps getting better,” the new NYCEDC President and Chief Executive Officer James Patchett said in a prepared statement. “The de Blasio administration is working to grow jobs in the amusement district, build affordable housing and invest in critical infrastructure. It’s all part of our effort to improve quality of life and expand opportunities for Coney Island residents while preserving the unique culture of this historic destination.”

This was overdue, another step in the consolidation of the amusement area along the boardwalk into one amusement park. It's a slow process, but it has to be done.

Would be great to get an indoor complex in CI. Year round mini golf, go carts, laser tag, paint ball, etc, would be fantastic. Maybe even a new bowling alley given Maple Lanes shut down and Shell is the only one in the area. Integrate some event spaces for nearby venues and slap on a usable green roof that connects down to the boardwalk for access.

Half of the amusement/entertainment district will be indoor. That's the only way they will achieve the goal of making it a year round destination. Thor was proposing a movie complex with rides on the roof, but that didn't get city approval (the rides would have been outdoor).

Coney Island needs one of those huge indoor ski slopes. I think all the Russians next door would like that as skiing is pretty popular amongst them if I'm not mistaken.

Half of this lot (the half along the boardwalk) is one of the sites listed, to be used for outdoor amusements. The other sites are basically streets between various other amusement elements. This is all part of the plan to consolidate the amusement area along the boardwalk.

Is that plan above definitive?

Looking at Google Earth, in order to make that plan, they have to raze the amusement park between W10th St. and W12th St. (formely Astroland) Also they would have to demolish the new rollercoaster along W15th St. which is only like two years old. In Google Earth you can see that they already laid that new Wonder Wheel Way, between W15th St. and W12th St.

Are they going to raze all that or will stay?

I think you're talking about the current Luna Park. The new amusements have been placed so that they are interchangeable and removable. They have already removed some rides, and put in new ones since opening.

The new Thunderbolt was put on city land, the northern end of which will eventually be indoor amusement space. But the city does not own the bordering land (talks are supposedly underway now) to complete the assemblage. Other than the current Wonder Wheel amusement park, the city has assembled the land (south of Wonder Wheel Way) that has been marked permanent parkland, it can never be developed over. That way the outdoor amusement area is preserved. (I seem to vaguely remember the City getting the Wonder Wheel park too).

In the current RFP, you see the streets that run south of Wonder Wheel Way are where the new amusement area is being extended,

This is the current configuration of Luna Park. Note that Deno's Wonder Wheel Park is nearly invisible, as are the other independent amusement operators still left in Coney.

If this plan isn't a return to the grandeur that was the original Coney Island, then I don't know what is.

John Catsimatidis wants his Coney Island development to have its own street car

SEPTEMBER 11, 2017
BY DEVIN GANNON

Quote:
As part of his “Ocean Dreams” development in Coney Island, billionaire real estate mogul John Catsimatidis plans to build a streetcar that would link the mixed-use project to the Stillwell Avenue subway station in Coney Island. Developed by Catsimatidis’ Red Apple Group, the project at 3514 Surf Avenue includes three buildings between West 36th and West 37th Streets that will feature retail space, 440 market-rate apartments and a 254-car garage. As the Coney Island News first reported, Catsimatidis said the streetcar would be available to everyone, not just residents of his development.

As 6sqft covered back in January, Red Apple filed plans for a 21-story tower on the Surf Avenue site after purchasing it the summer before. Since 2005, the developer has slowly acquired the lots between West 35th and West 37th Streets for the Ocean Dreams project. Designed by Hill West Architects, the project will include a building that includes food and pharmacies at its base, with 300 or more apartments above the third floor. Plus, a 254-car garage and a rooftop swimming pool are the development’s expected amenities. Developers also hope to build a supermarket and a restaurant on the boardwalk.

While Carsimatidis previously planned for a bus service between the development and Stillwell Avenue, the terminus station for southbound D, F, N and Q trains, he decided to go for a more inspired idea, developing trolley service. Catsimatidis said he would call the street car the “Coney Island Trolley.” The ambitious development is expected to open by fall of 2019.

According to the Coney Island News, residents expressed concern over the proposed street car at a community board meeting, afraid the service would interfere with the existing B36 bus route. Residents were also concerned about the lack of affordable housing units in the complex and some fear the Ocean Dreams development will make prices soar in the neighborhood. Catsimatidis said the community wanted more middle-class housing in the area.

“We talked about it with the community in the past and there are a lot of affordable units in that neighborhood already,” Catsimatidis said. He added, “the people actually lobbied us” to incorporate more market-rate, middle-class housing.

They keep publishing the out dated renderings from when Dattner was working on this. No one got the newer images from the Community Board meeting a couple of months ago?

Also fat chance at that trolley happening.

Some people seem to want a trolley. I wouldn't knock it, DeBlas is on his street rail crusade. As long as the City wouldn't have to pay for it, it would be a plus. Whether or not it gets done is another matter.

I feel the safest/easiest bet is to just up the B36 service or institute an express/limited B36. A separate entity coming into play a la a trolley seems like too much work, but if it managed to work out then hats off to it.

I think it's supposed to work as a sort of supplement. I'm thinking something along the line those trolley buses that go to different colleges.

Coney could be so much better. Make the amusement park more attractive and clean up the boardwalk. The place has more potential than what is going on right now. Things are moving very slowly, I don't get it.

Not a bad idea... they should turn this area into something even Dubai would be jealous of.
