Not too far from the Twin Oaks diner & gas station in "The Postman Always Rings Twice"? To make ends meet in the Depression, Katherine served road kill cooked in the German style, with potato pancakes and applesauce.

Seriously, "Sylvia Park" is a small unincorporated community in Topanga Canyon adjacent to the late actor Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum. Geer is best remembered for playing grandpa Walton on T.V. of course, and an old mountain man in "Jeremiah Johnson" who taught young Jeremiah (Rbt. Redford) survival skills.

Katherine's Kitchen, spelled incorrectly, is noted on this Topanga map from the 1930's.

It was at the junction of Topanga Canyon Road (Blvd) and Cheney Drive.

There's a Beer Garden on the roof.

It opened in 1959 as an English Pub. In 1963, a new owner, whose wife was German, changed it to a German Tavern.

It's the former National Biscuit Company Building (later NABISCO) (I thought it looked familiar) located at Mateo and Industrial Streets.

Last week when we were trying to figure out the location of the photographer when he took the photograph of the Ambassador Hotel
the Piccadilly Apartments came into play.


Here's a slide from the late 1970s(?) that captures the Piccadilly P.

As you can see it looks like it's part of the modern building. (is it a parking garage?)



This second slide, if I remember correctly, was being sold with the first slide is somewhat of a mystery.

I was surprised to see a cafeteria on what appears to be a side-street.

In the 1920s, Kohler's business was at either 917½ or 919½ S Broadway, but if you go back to the early 1910s, the Kohler Art Studio was at 535 S Main - I think I can make out '535' on the awnings in the detail views. That means that it was part of Robert W Woodley's Optic Theatre building at 533 S Main.

We're looking due north from a parking ramp behind what-is-now Central Plaza. The tower in the background belongs to the Oasis Church on the north side of Wilshire. The 1973 CD lists a business called Holland House at 3454 Wilshire. It doesn't say what type of business this was, but it matches the sign in e-r's photo.

You can get near the current location on Google Maps. The Holland House site is now home to Mrs Cs BBQ.

The link illustrates the dance studio of Veloz and Yolanda. Their sign is at the right.

L.A. High School atop Poundcake Hill, with the Jones Block in the foreground, in an image cropped from a stereographic photo card.....undated but likely about 1875.

There's two striped poles in front of the saloon....in the Old West barbers would sometimes ply their trade out of chairs set up in the rear of such establishments....the sign is promoting something for .25 cents, possibly "Shave and a Haircut two bits".....

The printing building housed the presses for the L.A. Daily Herald (est. 1873), the first paper in the city to utilize the steam powered rotary press....the machine revolutionized the newspaper industry....

Here's an aerial from December 1931. The houses on Wilshire are clearly visible, as are the Piccadilly Apartments on Irolo and many other extant apartment buildings south of 7th. Looking at Historic Aerials, it looks like the jog at the northern end of Irolo (which joins it to Normandie) was allowed for when the Tishman building was built, and completed by 1954. That wiped out Veloz and Yolanda's dance school, so they weren't neighbors with the Tishman building for long. According to GW's blog, the house next door at 3508 (which was home to Embassy Realty Associates Inc in its later days) only lasted a year or so longer.

mystery slide.

Here's another original slide also found on eBay. I happened upon it a week (or so) ago and now I can't find it again.
If I remember correctly, the seller said that the slide was taken in the Mid-Wilshire area / Koreatown.


As you can see, it's not that great of a slide but if you concentrate on the right side of the photograph there's something intriguing going on.

Judging by the wood fence-like barrier constructed around the houses I thought they were about to be torn down for a larger project.

hmmm. . .but now not so sure. What I thought was a construction barrier might actually be a. .um. .parking garage? . . .a one-story parking garage
(of course the bottom level could be below-grade / slightly underground)
If that's the case, the houses are just beyond the structure.

I'm hoping someone recognizes the street corner so we can figure out what's going on in the old slide. .and to see if the old houses are still there.
