Southwest to compete on Memphis-Atlanta air service starting next March
By Wayne Risher/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
The new flights will mark the first time since September 2016 that Memphians have had an alternative to Delta on the Memphis-Atlanta route... Airport officials believe many Memphians opt to make the 380-mile drive to Atlanta rather than fly, because of the cost of Delta’s flights. The drive has become easier since the upgrade of U.S. 78 into Interstate 22 and its completion into Birmingham.

West Memphis, Arkansas gets a big piece of the Carvana pie while work continues on their iconic vending machine tower & dealership in northeast Memphis (Tennessee) in the Appling Farms development visible from Interstate 40.

Carvana's local investment to include $40M, 450 jobs
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
The Memphis Business Journal first reported in July that the used-car e-tailer was in advanced negotiations to place an industrial facility in the 217-acre Mid-America Industrial Park. The deal closed recently and will include a $40 million investment, according to a news release sent Sept. 20... The Mid-America Industrial Park is owned by the City of West Memphis and is located just northwest of the I-40/I-55 split, adjacent to the Union Pacific intermodal terminal. The online car retailer is building one of its famous car-vending machines in northeast Memphis, just north of I-40 at 7201 Appling Farms Parkway.

Revised plans for Union Row unveiled
By Tom Bailey/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
The initial phase has been estimated to cost over $500 million. The project is designed to convert a distressed, underdeveloped 29 acres into a vibrant connection for the Beale Street entertainment district, the Medical District and the Edge neighborhood where Sun Studio draws tourists like a magnet... Adams released the latest, revised numbers for Phase 1, bounded by Union on the north, Fourth on the west, generally Gayoso on the south and Danny Thomas Boulevard on the east.

Wasn't expecting that one. WN hasn't shown it's ATL ops much love since the Air Tran buyout. Rumor is the BNA-ATL flights going head to head with Delta haven't been stellar. I guess it means they are going for the JAX, RSW and RDU traffic mainly. I fear the TPA nonstop will be going away as a result. Direct ATL fares will get dog cheap. Sub 200 across the board for nonstop R/Ts.

I wish they'd add a second Denver daily at least during the week or a LAS/PHX flight for better connectivity to So Cal
PHX would offer the better pricing.

Pitting Memphis between a Nawlins and STL flight would be nice as well.

There's too much opportunity at the Washington Bottoms site.
I'll give it 6 months before something is proposed again.

So far downtown...

A crane at St. Jude (more soon)
A crane at One Beale.
A crane at the Clipper site. No dirt has moved, but there's one sitting there.
Convention center may get a crane with its next phase starting.
Union row starting demolition here in a month or two.
Wiseacre Brewery in construction mode.
South city construction on the 2nd phase
Some apartments near the Civil Rights museum are being constructed
Fedex Logistics HQ at old Gibson Factory

I'm sure I'm missing a few. Not including minor projects. These are what I notice driving downtown every other day.

You got me searching airport & airline codes, but good to know. Interesting take on those scenarios. I know the ATL Delta flights have been a nearly impossible nut to crack in the past because of MEM previously being a fortress hub. I hope the increased competition keeps up while prices trend down.

Similar sized airports with Southwest like Omaha for example, offer up more directs than Memphis. Right now Omaha has 12 destinations with Southwest. I figure MEM would have had more by now but with the whole MAX issue, any real excess is going into their new Hawaii ops

Go Millington. Nice residential development, but look at the size of that park.

Developer plans 247 apartments, 72 homes in Shelby County suburb
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
A developer, who Donald Trump has called a "fantastic man," is planning a major residential development in Millington.... with the federal government investing $30 million into a huge park nearby... The federal investment comes as part of the $60 million in disaster resiliency funds Shelby County was awarded in 2016. It is meant to prevent a repeat of the floods in 2010 and 2011 that caused $79 million in property damages in Millington.

Amazon — yes, it's Amazon — moves forward on huge Raleigh proposal
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
Seefried Industrial Properties received the blessing of the Memphis & Shelby County Board of Adjustment to build a five-story distribution center in Raleigh set to employ over 1,000 people... The facility has an 824,000-square-foot ground floor and contains a total of 3.8 million square feet... The Amazon center would be located just north of the Nike North America Logistics Campus, on New Allen Road... Amazon — the fifth-most-valuable company in America, according to Fortune — has been expanding its Mid-South presence at a blistering pace during the past two years. Since October 2017, the company has announced its use of huge facilities at 3292 E. Holmes Road, 5155 Citation Drive, 3347 Pearson Road, and a 554,000-square-foot building on the northeast side of Hwy. 72 in Marshall County, near Norfolk Southern Way.

$5M Cossitt reno moves forward with cafe, recording studios, meeting space
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
The renovation of the Cossitt — which is estimated to cost about $5 million, all told — will include a new cafe, courtyard, meeting spaces with river views, and recording studios... Along with the substantial interior renovation, money will be spent on a new roof, HVAC system, and a pair of public art pieces. The pieces are a mural that represents the 1960 sit-ins that desegregated Memphis’ library system and a 13-foot sculpture of a mockingbird rising from a book.

Union Row developers announce startup-centric 'smart city'
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
When Union Row's buildings start rising out of the ground next spring, a parking garage, apartment building, and a hotel or two will lead the way, Kevin Adams said at celebration for the project Thursday evening. Not far behind will be an "innovation lab" office building that contains between 100,000 and 125,000 square feet of space, he announced... Adams said he's not trying to find traditional office tenants for that building, but he is trying to find an anchor tenant for the other office tower he has planned, which he expects to contain 250,000 square feet when it is built later on in Phase 1. The development's $500 million first phase is set to include 710 apartments and 310 hotel rooms, along with the two office buildings.

Uptown TIF expansion moves toward final vote by Shelby County Commission
By Linda A. Moore/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
The TIF expansion will increase the boundaries of the district to include all of New Chicago, Smokey City and Bickford. It makes every residential area in those communities eligible for improvement grants. Low-income residents would be eligible for home improvement grants of up to $30,000. Public spaces would qualify for improvement projects that include new sidewalks, street lighting and security cameras.

Back taxes paid on Firestone plant site
By Bill Dries, Tom Bailey/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
A private company led by businessman J.W. Gibson has paid all back city and county property taxes on the main parcel of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. plant in North Memphis, indicating some possible movement toward new development on the long-dormant site... Among projects developed by SRDC is Westwood Manor, 48 rental cottages designed for the elderly in Whitehaven. SRDC also developed Wesley Forest, 165 townhomes and 65 single-family homes in Whitehaven. A fifth of the units were set aside for low-income families, according to the website. And SRDC also has been involved in renovations for the historic James Lee House and Chisca Hotel conversion, according to the Gibson Companies website.

$3.8M Pyramid/Pinch pedestrian bridge steps forward at a new location
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
"In the Pinch, you do have the option of going in the [Pyramid's] back door, [so] we focused on people at the Convention Center or Civic Center Plaza," City of Memphis Housing & Community Development (HCD) project manager Mary Claire Borys said. "It will really enhance the experience for folks [going to or] from the newly remodeled Convention Center."... At Wednesday's meeting, the Design Review Board will also review plans for a relighting of the power station that is located across Front Street from the bridge project. The lighting is expected to cost $550,000. "You can't move it. You can't hide it. So, you might as well throw some pretty lights on it and treat it like public art, [which has] been done in other places," Borys said. "[It will] provide more light and vibrancy in that part of the Pinch District and give [people] a reason to walk [under I-40] toward the north."

Memphis Made signs deal for second taproom in hot neighborhood
By Greg Akers – Editor-in-Chief, Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
Memphis Made Brewing Co. announced Wednesday, Oct. 2, its plan to open a taproom and production space in the Edge District. At 17,000 square feet, the new location at 435 Madison Ave. is expected to include a taproom and offices, as well as enough extra space to significantly increase the company's production capacity...

The second taproom proposal includes a patio deck overlooking the Ravine — a planned public park extending between Union and Madison Avenues. The $5 million greenspace is being developed by Development Services Group (DSG) and the Downtown Memphis Commission; it was designed by Dalhoff Thomas Design Studio, with a conceptual master plan by LRK. The Ravine and taproom fall into the larger mixed-use redevelopment spearheaded by DSG. The project is anchored by the old Wonder Bread bakery, which is now occupied by the Orion Federal Credit Union's headquarters. Hundreds of apartment units are being built there, as well.
