Interesting to do a whole thread on just one bridge, great idea well executed. It is a beautiful bridge, with a lot of stories to tell.

I love this one! I remember walking the Brooklyn Bridge on my first visit to NYC- I had my hands all over it. Stroking the main cable, resting my hand on it, trying to imagine its incredible strength..grasping the suspender ropes in my hands, feeling them shiver and twitch. And those lovely stone towers, those also got my hands all over them as well. Something about that bridge encourages touching, it's downright loveable!
It felt almost like standing in the middle of the most epic game of cat's cradle ever played, with all the suspenders and stay cables surrounding me. Beautiful!

thanks! I couldn't describe the experience better myself, at least not in such colorful terms. During the blackout a few years ago thousands of people were walking (virtually marching, like they do in New York) over the bridge at once on their way home when the span started to sway back and forth. I think for me this would have been a sensory experience a little too extreme, especially on a bridge over 120 years old!

I miss my years living in Cobble Hill when my commute usually involved a walk across the bridge. Really great photos.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful photo set. It brings back fond memories from more than twenty years ago of visiting my now-departed good friend Greg after he moved from the Midwest to New York, and walking many miles with him around Manahattan. Some of those miles included walking across the Brooklyn bridge.

I don't remember seeing all the locks when I walked across a few years ago. Any story/superstition behind that? Anyone?

The padlocks on the bridge are a tradition that couples use to represent their love...their hearts locked together....The tradition began in Europe and it was brought by people over to NY. Officially one is not allowed to add the locks but it's done anyway....From time to time the authorities use bolt cutters and remove them.

Question: What happened to those pedestrian walkways?
I see 3 of them on this old photo from 1883, but only one now.

Great year of 2011, while WTC still growing up.

All those padlocks should be removed for safety reason of the bridge.

they were taken out along with trolley lanes to make more room for the almighty automobile — because ‘murica! i think there is is a plan to put one back, not sure whats up with that. i hope it happens because its overcrowded and sorely needed as the bike riders are absolute terrorists.

Concerning the almighty automobile, I recommend this informative documentary: Taken for a Ride (1996) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236785/
It can be seen on YouTube and elsewhere, like here: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6dt8ji.
