The building IDs are copied word-for-word from the Huntington website.

And let's credit Beaudry with introducing us to the Conner Palmer collection and first showing us the color shot of Martz flats: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=15645

We've seen the trackless trolley numerous times, but I am unsure if we've encountered the Bungalow Inn. (sign behind the trolley)

Anyone interested in glimpses of the roof area and interior of this building should take a look at the TV show NCIS, season 6, episode 15, "Deliverance". This building is the site of the murder that the team is investigating. A lot of scenes also take place in the housing project next door. If you know where to look, you can even spot a tiny bit of NCIS's fake "PCs" gang graffiti in Google Street View.

I recently found this interesting and rare postcard of the Seminole Apt. Hotel
ebay

Here is a rear view among a group of other signs.

The Seminole is in the center. (Beaudry confirmed this is the Seminole for me back in 2011)

ebay/originally posted in 2011

Here it is from a different angle. (notice the same house in both photos)

...some great information on the Seminole by Beaudry.

But taking "artistic license" and putting it on a corner? Puh-leeeze. Gratuitous fanciful rooftop signage is a hallmark of early hotel postcards but -- placing it on a corner, was that supposed to entice out-of-town rubes to whom the card was sent? In any event, there was in fact an alley to the south of the Seminole. That the postcard makes it look like a street we'll chalk up to Angeleno boosterism.

Guess who built the Seminole? R. B. Young & Son, who built the Young Apts I wrote about earlier today. It opens in the spring of 1911. 72 apartments of two and three rooms each, and 12 single rooms. The exterior was of red pressed brick and marble trimmings. The Orenas being the wealthy Spanish family who owned the block.

What's most notable in your eBay image e_r is that they've added the large Franco-Renaissance northern addition to the Seminole
(yep, all one structure according to atlases of the times). I further drool over the cast iron & glass marquis.

ebay

Now go back (scroll up) to that image and look at that lone house at 630 S Flower. The houses next to it have had their driveways laid out, but they're still empty lots. By the car I'd guess this to be about...1915? I'm no car expert. But I think I'm about right. And the reason those plots are empty? Our current economic sitch is nothing compared to the Panic of 1910, much less the Recession of 1913-14, where business and trade activity dropped 20-25%. Lest we forget the insane downturn of 1918-19 due to the postwar unemployment jazz. (Never ceases to amuse that people think that whatever's happening now is somehow the a) first and b) worst it has or ever will happen...) In any event, empty plots with driveways. Telling. I still can't believe I don't own this image. I always marry the inquisitive to the acquisitive. So sue me.

The 1970s was not a good time for historic preservation and there is not much to be said about the present school building.

I have seen this picture of the LA High Tower before. I have always wondered why they tore everything down around it first, gutted the bottom part of the tower, and essentially left the completed tower standing like this before finishing it off. It sure looks unstable on those skinny columns. Anyone know why they did this, or how the final demolition of the tower was handled? Dynamited? Pulled down with a bulldozer? It's really odd how they did this.

I noticed that Thom Andersen's remastered "Los Angeles Plays Itself" is at the IFC this week, so went to see it today. It definitely holds your attention for the approx 2:45 running time, at least it does for those interested in LA history. Andersen's narration is sometimes a little annoying--for instance, one thing that grinds his gears is the city being called by its initials (he says something like "only a city with an inferiority complex would allow itself to be called by its initials," which seems pretty silly to me)--and he seems to forget that movies are not literal...anyway, what I think he needs to do is to start hanging around NLA. Above are two screenshots from Los Angeles Plays Itself (NOT L.A Plays Itself). His narration states that the scenes, from 1931's Public Enemy with Cagney & Harlow, depict the stars in front of Bullocks-Wilshire, even mentioning that the store was opened in September 1929. However...he has placed the scene a little too far east. Who can identify the correct location?

The whole film can be seen on youtube--

Wilshire Blvd. service station 1920s (is it the one with the dome and color tiles we recently discussed?) I forget the name.

-seller mentions the 'visible' (glass top) pump on the right. I'll mention the handsome attendant on the left.

1966 - The 1924 and 1960 Gas Company buildings on the right, 800-810 block of South Flower Street. Across 8th
Street, the Congress Hotel in ochre and the Hotel Armondale in white. The large building in distance is the 1927
Roosevelt building by Curlett and Beelman.

1966 - Cleveland Wrecking Company demolishing the 705 South Hope Street building at the southwest corner of 7th and Hope Streets. At the
same intersection corner sits a shoe shine stall and a Winkys fast food stand. The 1925 Renaissance Revival style Barker Brothers building with
its vertically oriented sign sits on the next block.
