Thanks CBD, I started smoking because it seemed to be the cool thing to do in 1960. While at Air Force basic training near San Antonio TX, one of the few moments we got to relax was when our sergeant allowed us to take a smoke break (he was addicted) and because it was a pause from the constant stress many of those who had never smoked before took it up. But that’s not the half of it…if you got to Viet Nam smoking was the least of your worries. I’m just glad I stopped, because I don’t think I’d be alive to see birthday number 72 coming up this Friday!!!!

Thanks. As familiar as the building seemed, so many hide in plain sight.

(The lack of practical elevators necessarily affected building design and, in particular, height. With this in mind, any idea what is/was LA's tallest building without an elevator? How many stories?)

Just a few blocks away from the Locusts, where Highland meets Sunset , there once sat Levitoff's Delicatessen. Probably visited by many Hollywood High Schoolers and truants. Now replaced by a mini-maxi mall. Simple but elegant roof construction (no barrel tiles) seems slightly out of place, but clean and inviting. But could Jim make anyone beautiful?

1923-32 6773 Sunset Boulevard.

The nice thing about this arrangement was that in '32, H S Levitoff, was present to ensure freshness as he lived right around the corner at 1509 N. McCadden Place. http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCar...h_doc=levitoff

more County General Hospital

Everyone has probably seen this photo of an interesting operating theater with stadium seating at the old County Hospital, taken when it was newly opened...

(DWP Photo Collection at WaterAndPower.org)

Well, I got to wondering where in that giant 18 story building that room could possibly be. I figured the main clue is that huge 3-story, four section high window. Flipping through some pics, I noticed that there was only one such fenestration, at the 15-17 floor, west end of the building (highlighted yellow):

Had some time at lunch today, so I went up and looked. Sure enough, there it was:

At some point they clearly added a more sophisticated illumination system and removed whatever those wall mounted devices were, but it's largely the same. I would have taken a picture from the same point as the original but...

...for reasons unknown they walled off about a third of the stadium seating.

If you think those seats look steep, you're right. They're pretty scary to navigate. The steps leading from tier to tier are nearly ladder-steep, and the railings are uncomfortably low. If you fell backwards while climbing them, you'd likely fall all the way down and die of a cracked skull. Clearly this was designed and built in the old days, before safety was invented.

Urbanas has been looking for a photo of the 200 block of Main Street depicting Tally's - the Lyric - or Glockner's Automatic Theater. (262 S. Main St.) http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=15640

This is the first image that comes to mind. I've unsuccessfully tried to repost this as an enlargement with the detail it deserves. For others more adept with the 'SC conundrum, perhaps you can identify what is being advertised on the big neon toward the upper left side of the image? This might be helpful in locating additional neighborhood images and possibly something with the Tally's-Lyric-Glockner likeness.

Source indicates 1918, but I suspect it's earlier. (Hint: to the left and above the awning)

Can't help but marvel at the train switcher's tower.

We've seen it before:

Given the limitations of monitor, hard to tell . . . 1911? Can't make out name on tank. Shape resembles Indian. but lettering is not there.

June 1937. Alameda Street relief sewer reconstruction. Looking north from 41st place toward 39th Street.

Grab a sandwich at Levitoff's before or after clothes shopping at Roos? Then, the excitement of night miniature golf. La Cienega and Wilshire. Anyone with a "color" image (bottom)?

It was fun and crazy, ER. I lived a few blocks from the studio, so I could go home at lunch time and check my mail.
I think the director thought I was stealing the scene from Karen Black. Who knows...he's the one who placed me in front of her.

jg6544 Its like four movies in one...very noir and complex.

Actual scenes from the film as it was edited for TV. In the longer version of the film, you see a lot of me. In the TV version, not so much.
