Yeah I find the name mildly nauseating. It's a long road from unapproved, ungranted proposal and completion, so I wouldn't presume that's necessarily the final branding.

Please. If the name is the only thing bothering people, then by all means, don’t go. The millions who would go to a casino complex won’t give a rat’s ass what its called. Just as long as they can get in.

Thank you NYguy for slicing through the noise and getting to the heart of the matter.

Nobody is claiming the name will cause people not to attend by bringing about cataclysmic universal repulsion. That doesn't change the fact the name kinda sucks.

^ oh please, its not the name, its the destruction of coney island via corporate takeover. ‘they’ have been looking for any excuse to clear out any vestiage of old coney for ever. what they should do instead is add more amusement rides, not gambling.

but speaking of noise, here is a little something via brooklyn vegan — no idea if its connected to a casino, but possible i guess — its off the announcement that rolling loud nyc music festival at citifield parking lot is not happening this year:

Rolling Loud's announcement comes the same year that Governors Ball, another festival that had happened at Citi Field's parking lot for its past few editions, announced a move to Flushing Meadows Corona Park. While that move has been in the works for a while, there have been ongoing discussions over building a casino near Citi Fields. There's no word on whether that had anything to do with either festival's decisions, however. Stay tuned for any further updates.

Queens lawmaker submits bill to convert Mets’ Citi Field parking lots into casino

By Carl Campanile
March 22, 2023

Quote:
New Yorkers could be singing take me out to the casino if a Queens pol has his way!

Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow Mets owner Steve Cohen to redevelop the overflow parking lots around the baseball team’s Citi Field into a casino and entertainment complex.

The lots and other property around Citi Field in Willets Point are deemed parkland — designated as part of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park back in 1939.

A change in state law is required to allow for other uses.

So Aubry, who represents Corona and parts of Flushing — is swinging the zoning bat and rolling the dice for Cohen and his development firm New Green Willets LLC.

“The city of New York is authorized to discontinue the use as parkland and alienate through the entering of leases or other agreements with New Green Willets, LLC … for the purposes of developing, constructing, maintaining, operating, using, or occupying such lands with a gaming facility,” the text of the bill says.

Aubry told The Post that he wanted to give Cohen’s team a shot at winning the casino bid.

“They would not be able to compete without the legislation. They should have an opportunity to compete,” Aubry said.

“I’m also interested in the jobs and opportunities that would be provided to the local communities.”

Just as important, Aubrey said, is that a public park and path would run connecting the Willets Point No. 7 station to the Flushing Marina as part of the redevelopment.

Public access to Flushing Bay is now limited, he said.

State Sen. Jessica Ramos, who also represents the area that includes the Cohen property, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and surrounding neighborhoods, had no immediate comment.

New York: Freedom Plaza casino proposal pulling out all stops to build local support

Mark Saxon
Apr 13, 2023

Quote:
In a note put out by Bank of America Global Research this week, the bank projected that adding three new casinos to the New York City area would make New York the second-largest commercial gaming state in the U.S.

It projects that the three downstate facilities would combine for roughly $5 billion in annual gross gaming revenue (GGR). With 10 proposals on the table from some of the largest casino operators and real estate developers in the country, the competition to be selected for licenses will be intense. Bank of America sees the projects to be chosen benefiting from high population density, domestic and international tourism, and attractive initial tax rates.

With Manhattan proposals among those likely to get a long look from the New York State Gaming Commission, there’s one challenge to building a new Las Vegas-style casino in the heart of the Big Apple that could make other factors moot: potentially stiff local resistance.
Quote:
Freedom Plaza project attempts to distinguish itself

While each of the four Manhattan proposals continue to work all back channels to build political support, one of the projects could have some key advantages when it comes to easing concerns about traffic congestion, construction hassles, and zoning limitations. The Freedom Plaza proposal for the Midtown East neighborhood is trying to forge a niche as the most acceptable locally of the four options.

“I think we have the upper hand, because we have the best partner. I think we have the best piece of property. I think we have the best program,” said Mohegan President and CEO Ray Pineault, whose group is partnering with the Soloviev Group on a project that includes two residential towers that promise affordable housing and green space near the East River.

“I think we offer the best overall project for the state of New York and New York City and the community. So, I’m biased. In that vein, we’re reaching out to our local representatives and state representatives and letting them know we want to work with the community to make sure we bring the best product forward and that we have the best project.”

If local support really is the determining factor — and the gaming commission’s website says the next step is to acquire “public support via approval of the applicable Community Advisory Committee,” as well as meeting all zoning requirements and paying the $1 million application fee — Freedom Plaza has some advantages.

For one thing, the Soloviev Group owns the valuable 6.7-acre property near the United Nations where the project would be located, meaning using public land wouldn’t be a concern as it is with some of the other proposals. The project leaders are also pushing the experience Mohegan has in the area after 27 years of running the Mohegan Sun two hours northeast of Manhattan in Connecticut.

How Broadway Theater Owners Are Trying to Block a Times Square Casino
A new coalition, organized by the Broadway League, has formed to defeat a casino proposal backed by Caesars and Jay-Z.

By Dana Rubinstein
April 14, 2023

Quote:
Some New Yorkers may love Times Square; some definitely hate it. That also goes for a casino that may be headed there.

Caesars Entertainment and SL Green Realty Corporation, New York City’s largest commercial landlord, say that Times Square — with its neon lights and jostling tourists — is tailor-made for their Jay-Z-backed bid for a parlor of one-armed bandits and roulette wheels.

Via their “Coalition for a Better Times Square,” they have enlisted dozens of local supporters, including roughly a dozen restaurants in the area; two hotel chains with properties nearby; several unions, including the Actors’ Equity Association and Local 802, which represents Broadway musicians; two local stores; and a handful of landlords.

But Max Klimavicius, the owner of the century-old Sardi’s restaurant, would like a word.

“A casino in Times Square has the potential to jeopardize the character of the theater district and ultimately the fate of its restaurants,” Mr. Klimavicius said. “Casinos are designed to keep the gamblers inside. They have their own restaurants.”

Sardi’s is part of a new coalition, organized by the Broadway League, that is designed to defeat the casino proposal. The group, called the No Times Square Casino Community Coalition, also includes two restaurants and a bar founded by Joe Allen, as well as a Times Square church, five residents associations, a bus association and a youth travel association.
Quote:
Ken Sturm, the owner of Bacall’s Family Steakhouse just down the street from Sardi’s, did not share the views of Ms. LaFargue or Mr. Klimavicius, whose concerns he dismissed as “stupid.”

“It’s a big shot in the arm for New York City to have it in Midtown at this convenient location, versus Queens or Yonkers or some nonsense like that,” sad Mr. Sturm, whose five-year-old restaurant has been struggling to recover from the pandemic.

Hard Rock Chairman Jim Allen: Atlantic City Threatened by New York Casinos

April 21, 2023
Devin O'Connor

Quote:
Hard Rock International Chairman Jim Allen made concerning, yet unsurprising, comments this week at the East Coast Gaming Congress in Atlantic City. His remarks were about the impending arrival of full-scale casinos in downstate New York.

Allen’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on the Atlantic City Boardwalk is one of the more profitable casinos in the local market. But when three full-scale casinos open in downstate New York in the coming years, Allen believes the less-profitable casinos in Atlantic City will be threatened.

"Atlantic City receives 30% of its revenue from upstate New Jersey and downstate New York, and there’s no doubt it is going to have an impact on this particular market,” Allen said Thursday during the final day of the ECGC.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) last week revealed that profits for the nine casinos declined almost 5% last year despite robust revenue of more than $3.3 billion. The casinos blamed high overhead primarily caused by inflation for the reduced bottom lines.

Nassau County strikes deal with Las Vegas Sands to bring casino to area

April 26, 2023

Quote:
Nassau County reached a lease agreement with Las Vegas Sands that gives them control over the Nassau Coliseum site.

The county will get a lump sum payment, as well as annual revenues to the county and the Town of Hempstead and surrounding communities exceeding $100 million per year.

"And we believe that will bring jobs, economic prosperity, tax relief, and improved safety here in Nassau County," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said at a briefing Wednesday.

Blakeman was joined by a number of leaders from organized labor groups as well as the NAACP who are all in favor of the agreement.

Nassau Community College supports the project and already has a partnership in place with the casino-resort company.

But the deal has its critics. Hofstra University and residents who have formed a group named "Say No to the Casino" are against the casino plans, saying it will only bring in more crime and traffic.
Quote:
Sands wants to build a $4 billion "integrated resort" on the 72-acre site, commonly known as the Nassau Hub, that would include a casino, hotel rooms, ballrooms and conference spaces, live entertainment venue, restaurants, health club and spa.

The company intends to apply for a New York commercial gaming license at a $500 million cost, and must have control of the site to apply.

About a dozen entities are vying for three available licenses in the downstate region, which includes New York City, Long Island and Westchester.

Las Vegas Sands C.E.O. Rob Goldstein said the company isn't yet sure what it will do with the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"It may remain as it is, it may not. We're going to build an alternative venue no matter what to complement that, but I don't know at this point," Goldstein said.

Nassau Casino Moves Ahead; Opponents Decry 'Publicity Stunt'

Jerry Barmash
Apr 27, 2023

Quote:
The ink is barely dry on the lease agreement between Nassau County and Las Vegas Corporation, but the criticism is as fresh as ever for bringing a casino to the Nassau Hub. County Executive Bruce Blakeman fronted the announcement Wednesday of the $4-billion pact to ultimately build a world-class hotel, casino and entertainment space.

It's the middle part of that equation that has angered some people, including Allison O'Brien-Silva, with the "Say No to the Casino" activist group.

"[Blakeman] had nothing to celebrate," she told Patch. "It was just a publicist stunt to try to convince folks that this proposal is a done deal."

Billionaire Steve Cohen Has a Plan to Become the King of Queens
To win a coveted New York casino license, he’s ‘hired the best team that money can buy.’

ByLaura Nahmias and Gregory Korte
April 28, 2023

Quote:
Steve Cohen likes to boast that he’ll spend whatever it takes to win.

He did it over three decades building his $27.2 billion investment business, buying the New York Mets for $2.4 billion in 2020 and then assembling a team to win the World Series at such incredible cost — his $353 million payroll is the highest in MLB history — that rival owners dubbed a penalty teams must pay when their payroll exceeds a certain level the “Cohen tax.” (The Cohen Mets haven’t won a World Series yet.)

Now, he’s at it again in an effort to win one of the most lucrative prizes in gambling: one of three licenses to build a casino in New York City, an opportunity that’s drawn some of the biggest names in real estate and gaming.
Quote:
At least half of the proposals are targeting Manhattan, where a casino would probably be the most lucrative — including for the state, which gets a sizable cut of any revenue. Caesars Entertainment Inc. wants to place slots, poker and roulette tables in the building that’s home to The Lion King in Times Square. Saks Fifth Avenue is eyeing a boutique casino atop its flagship store, while Stefan Soloviev has pitched a gaming complex near the United Nations.

Cohen is proposing a casino next to the Mets’ Citi Field in Queens on what’s currently a vast parking lot and park.

It’s an expensive competition, with the state charging $500 million for each license and requiring a minimum $500 million investment. Collectively, bidders are spending a fortune on pitches for casinos from midtown Manhattan to Nassau County on Long Island. But Cohen is outspending all the new entrants into New York’s casino market. The hedge fund titan, worth $13.1 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, has hired eight firms, employing nearly two dozen lobbyists to woo elected officials across city and state government as well as the local community.

For Coney Island, New York’s Casino License is the Missing Piece of the Puzzle

MAY 5, 2022

Quote:
For many years, Coney Island and the surrounding community have been looking for opportunity, investment and a chance at a better future. It’s not often that all these chances arrive in a single package, but that’s what the community is getting with the possibility of a brand new, year-round, gaming and entertainment venue. The proposal, led by Thor Equities Group, Saratoga Casino Holdings, Chickasaw Nation and Legends, will lead to a revitalization of Coney Island and begin a new future for the historic neighborhood.

Coney Island is a world-famous destination that has been a favorite summer retreat for more than a century. Now, with the neighborhood facing a series of unique challenges in recent years, a development anchored by a brand new hotel and convention center, a dozen new restaurants, an acre of new open space and a modern gaming and entertainment venue is just the push it needs to grow into a year-round entertainment destination for New Yorkers as well as conventioneers and vacationers. The Real Deal had an exclusive interview with Melissa Gliatta, COO at Thor Equities, to learn more about how her firm’s proposal will revitalize this slice of NYC history as well as the partners who will help bring it to fruition.
Quote:
The group’s plan taps into Coney’s history both distant and recent: in its earliest days, when Coney Island was seen as the fun and carefree alternative to the staid recreation available in Frederick Law Olmsted’s Central Park. Coney Island’s was focused on other types of entertainment, particularly those that catered to New Yorkers seeking a temporary escape from the Victorian social mores of the time, creating what Gliatta calls “a playground before we had a lot of playgrounds” that became world-famous for its Wonder Wheel and Luna Park. It was the kind of recreation that was affordable to all types of families.

A devastating string of fires ravaged many Coney Island beloved attractions in the 1940s. Though the area continued to draw seasonal crowds during the warmer months, revitalization efforts eventually hit a roadblock in the late 1970s. In recent years, the lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy and the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic have compounded the region’s struggles with issues like unemployment and aging infrastructure. Against this backdrop, the Coney Teamand Gliatta view this project as a crucial opportunity to rewrite Coney Island’s narrative for the modern age.
Quote:
The proposal for The Coney is designed to turn the neighborhood into a year-round entertainment destination. “We have better community safety when we have activation 365 days a year,” says Gliatta. “Right now, other than the summer months, foot traffic drops and local businesses struggle.” The proposal is anchored in a straightforward yet powerful premise: safer neighborhoods will be the result of reduced desolation and increased activity. From this foundation, every other facet of the plan falls into place. Central to this mission is the creation of meaningful career opportunities for local residents, both during the construction phase and after the completion of The Coney.

A project of this size and scope requires thousands of skilled professionals and as a result it will provide valuable employment and development opportunities for members of the community. By breathing new life into the area, The Coney will not only enhance safety but also foster a more dynamic and prosperous local economy for years to come. The plan has already found strong support among residents, with over 3000 locals signing on to support the proposal. “If we can’t figure out a way to grow careers in Coney Island,” says Gliatta, “this project won’t be successful.” The level of support the proposal has already garnered makes The Coney unique among the prominent casino proposals, many of which are facing significant pushback from residents.
Quote:
The Coney will also tap into another under-served market: conventions.

“One of the things that we believe New York City has really been missing is that tier two convention center,” explains Gliatta, “so we plan to have a convention space in our project.”

Transforming Coney Island into a year-round attraction involves drawing in visitors from all corners of the globe, and offering convention space is an integral part of achieving this goal. Not only will it make the area more attractive to global conventioneers, but it will also create exciting prospects for hosting local events such as graduation ceremonies and weddings.

Thanks to its reputation as a “worldwide brand name,” Coney Island, along with Brooklyn at large, has a distinct advantage in enticing conventions that may currently be hosted in other American cities boasting the convention facilities that New York City currently lacks. By capitalizing on this familiarity, The Coney is poised to become a prime location for hosting major events and bringing even more vibrancy to this iconic destination.

The Coney Proposal Goes The Extra Mile To Reach Locals

Written By Matt Boecker
May 2, 2023

Quote:
Each downstate New York casino proposal has faced an abundance of backlash from community members. But one has a strong group of supporters, and it didn’t happen by chance.

The Coney Island casino proposal got 3,363 signatures from community members that support the downstate NY casino project. You’re probably thinking these came on a popular petition website like Change.org — well think again.

Former New York City council member Robert Cornegy is now a consultant for The Coney, and he knocked on more than 16,300 doors to discuss the casino proposal and get physical signatures from residents.

Momentum grew for a Coney Island casino proposal last October when sources told PlayNY that Thor Equities backed the intentions. Along with Saratoga Casino Holdings, the Chickasaw Nation and Legends.

“I was going door to door to residents and getting their input, which is kind of old school,” Cornegy told PlayNY. “But we believe it’s very reliable to go and actually talk to people individually, to not just get a signature, per se, but to get a sentiment that’s associated with that signature.”

Cornegy spoke to three groups of people when knocking on doors: homeowners, those living in New York City Housing Authority buildings and apartments, and business owners.
Quote:
Cornegy noted the importance of getting real feedback from residents by having face-to-face conversations.

“I believe it makes a difference in the overall project,” Cornegy said, “because what we got was what people wanted to see. What people were feeling about it. We got a lot of comments around what they perceive to be an investment in their area in particular.”

The community outreach efforts by the other downstate casino proposals have varied. But other groups have often tried connecting with the community by hosting meetings.

Cornegy believes only the most active members of a community attend meetings and voice their opinions, making them unrepresentative of the neighborhood as a whole. Instead, The Coney took a more grassroots approach.

“We believe that the true methodology to get the best snapshot is to go all over the community as opposed to inviting people in,” Cornegy said. “That’s about style, I think. Our style is wanting to have the maximum input of the community — not just get yeses and get signatures.”

The former council member added that knocking on doors prevents The Coney from controlling the environment and narrative in the same way hosting a meeting does. But that’s not a negative, as it allowed the group to build a more sustainable relationship with the community.
Quote:
When casinos are proposed in any area, residents’ most common fear is a spike in crime. Cornegy revealed the same is true among the Coney Island locals he spoke with.

But he’s in the camp that believes the addition of The Coney could actually decrease the crime levels in south Brooklyn.

“I kind of beat that back with the idea that as a crime prevention technique, in most large metropolitan areas in the country, they use lighting up areas and cleaning up areas as a crime prevention technique,” Cornegy said “Almost to say that the more people that are traversing a space, it de-escalates the crime because most criminals want to be where it’s dark – illegal activity can go unnoticed.”

Cornegy commented that many people formulate opinions on erroneous information. So speaking with residents in person allowed the group to set the record straight by providing facts and statistics, which opened up the minds of those opposing The Coney.

“What I’ve found is when I’ve had an opportunity, or the team has had an opportunity to actually present the project in its entirety, people have walked back a step or two,” Cornegy said. “Some people on the spot are like ‘Oh, I didn’t know that. That makes a world of difference, I look at this differently.’ And then some people, the majority of people, say ‘That makes a lot of sense, I’d like to hear more about the project.’”

Cornegy called to the old Syms Corporation slogan: ‘An educated consumer is our best customer’. He believes the same rings true for The Coney, and once the locals get on board, word of mouth will further promote the proposal.
Quote:
Cornegy’s dedication to The Coney stems from the potential upside it could bring to the area. Putting the actual casino aside, The Coney’s proposal calls for a hotel and convention center — you currently can’t find either of those things in south Brooklyn. Renderings for The Coney were released in March.

“This project has the potential to change the scope and scale of the community, in addition to adding jobs and opportunity and careers,” Cornegy said. “There’s this different distinction that should be made between jobs and careers. These are in some instances union jobs with union wages which propel people into the middle class and beyond.”

The groups backing The Coney believe this project could positively transform the lives of Brooklynites. This is the same neighborhood Cornegy was born and raised in. That’s why he’s incredibly passionate about advocating for The Coney.

Steve Cohen’s team releases community-based report regarding development of 50 acres of asphalt around Citi Field

By Ethan Marshall
Posted on May 12, 2023

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and his team at North Shore Strategies have released a report of what the public would like to see done with the 50 acres of asphalt around Citi Field. The report is based off community feedback from 200 meetings with community leaders and 15 community workshops.

***

According to the polling report, 65% of respondents were more supportive of the project if it included a hotel with live music, casino gaming and conference spaces. Upon becoming more familiar with the casino’s features, they became more supportive of the gaming feature. Approximately 68% of those who responded were more likely to support the project with the casino acting as the main economic engine. The belief is that this would help attract people to the area year-round.

Even after receiving this much feedback for the report, Cohen’s team at North Shore Strategies is still trying to get thoughts from as many members of the community as possible. His team is has been taking these conversations door-to-door in Corona, East Elmhurst, Lefrak City, Jackson Heights and Flushing. In order to maximize feedback and transparency, the canvassers are fluent in English, Spanish, Korean and Chinese.

Rally Planned In Opposition To Nassau Casino
Sunday's protest comes on the eve of the County Legislature's expected vote on transferring the Nassau Hub lease to the Las Vegas Sands.

Ahead of the biggest day to date for the hotel/casino proposal for the former Nassau Coliseum site, a rally is planned in opposition.

Organizers for "Say No to the Casino" will gather outside the Nassau Legislative Building on Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, the full body is expected to vote on the lease transfer to the Las Vegas Sands. It passed in the legislature's Rules Committee last week.

While the project has been greenlighted by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Garden City Mayor Mary Carter Flanagan recently called the proposal "worse than a bad idea."

She said the "mega-casino" at the Nassau Hub would "do so much damage."

Critics of the hotel say it will bring a backlash of traffic and crime to the community.

"Negative impacts of a casino far outweigh any revenue gains," A "Say No to the Casino" spokesperson said.

It's a proposed $4 billion deal that the County and the Sands signed last month.

"This will be the final opportunity to voice opposition before the County Legislature is entrusted with this important decision," Flanagan wrote in her weekly newsletter.

’Feeling lucky.' Caesars CEO gambles on winning a coveted casino license in Times Square

By: Tara Rosenblum and Lee Danuff
May 25, 2023

Quote:
The CEO of North America's largest gaming operator sat down with News 12's Tara Rosenblum about in-depth plans to place a full-scale Las Vegas-style casino in the heart of Times Square if given the opportunity.

Caesars Entertainment is one of roughly a dozen gaming giants rumored to be applying for one of the three highly coveted casino licenses in New York state. The list includes some of the world's largest casino operators and developers.

CEO Tom Reeg says if granted a license, Caesars will retrofit an existing 52-story skyscraper owned by partner SL Green along 45th Street and Seventh Avenue to include 250,000-square feet of gaming space and a 950-room hotel.

Reeg says Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, are also partners of the project that would be the most expensive property that Caesars has ever been built.
Quote:
The casino would have bars overlooking Times Square, a tailored experience for different levels of players and an "unbelievable sports book experience."

"If you think about our partnership with Roc and what Jay-Z has done in sports bar type elements in his empire, if you combine the two, I think you'll have something that's unmatched in the country," says Reeg.

Reeg says safety and traffic plans have also been considered.

"We have traffic consultants all ready with plans where we would reduce the congestion in Times Square from where it is today ... And I think if opponents take the time to sit down and hear what we're planning, what my experience has been, is they walk away with a different opinion," he says. Reeg
Quote:
Reeg also predicts the revenue that the casino would bring into New York. "I'd say we already pay north of $100 million in taxes to the state of New York through sports betting, and we would expect this property to exceed that by a healthy margin," he says.

It takes about three years to build a casino, but Reeg says Caesars would be able to retrofit the Times Square skyscraper in about 18 to 24 months.

"This is a worthwhile prize," he says. "I am feeling lucky." Watch

Hudson Yards developer reveals revised $10 billion bid for casino

By Steve Cuozzo, Josh Kosman and Carl Campanile
May 28, 2023

Quote:
Just Wynn, baby!

Related Companies revealed a revised plan – exclusively to The Post – for its proposed Hudson Yards casino mega-complex that rolls the dice on two gleaming skyscrapers after two top contenders seemingly crapped out.

Related CEO Jeff Blau said the proposed $10 billion development plan for the Yards’ entire western half will be kick-started by the 3 million-square-foot, Wynn-branded “resort” tower – which would also house a 1,700-room hotel to serve the struggling Javits Center — as the developer seeks to snag the precious gaming license.

“It will be one of the most incredible tall buildings in New York City,” Blau gushed Friday.

The table games like blackjack, craps, poker and roulette would take up 250,000 square feet in the new skyscraper – along with the high-end restaurants and shops that Blau hopes will attract both whales and guppies looking to try their luck on the far West Side.
Quote:
Related, led by founder Stephen M. Ross, plans to retain a previously announced 5.5-acre public green park connected to the High Line, a much-needed public school for the area, and a 1-million square-foot rental apartment tower that will include 329 “affordable” units.
Quote:
”For these reasons we feel we’re in a good position with the best proposal,” Blau said. “We’re looking to win.”

Blau’s chances for victory in the casino sweepstakes were boosted after projected frontrunner Steve Cohen’s proposal for a gambling and entertainment complex on state-owned land near Citi Field was shot down by a Queens politician last week.

Casino operator Bally’s also seems to be out of the running with its bid to place a gambling den on Donald Trump’s golf course in the Bronx because of a conflict with the city over leasing issues for the land.

Bally’s may make a last-ditch attempt for a casino in Cohen’s backyard with a proposal on private land at Willets Point.
Quote:
Other major suitors who want to put a casino in Coney Island, Times Square, atop Saks Fifth Avenue and near the United Nations also face stiff resistance from local officials.

Blau’s main competition now seems to be coming from Long Island, where Sands’s bid to build a casino on the Nassau Coliseum grounds gained local approval last week.
Quote:
Blau hopes his ace in the hole – of bringing the Javits much-needed hotel rooms – will trump Hoylman’s objections and probable “No” vote.

Related may also benefit from Ross being one of Hochul’s biggest donors.

“The Javits Center just expanded but continues to lose business to other cities because it doesn’t have a hotel,” said Blau, adding that Wynn is experienced at booking conventions and could be a big help in luring events from other cities.

“At some point a convention hotel needs to be near Javits and this would be it,” a source close to the project said.

Blau also said the new office tower would buck the current difficulties facing the city’s commercial real estate market.

Related’s four office skyscrapers on the site’s eastern half are nearly full, Blau said.

He noted that 30 Hudson Yards is fully sold to companies including KKR, while 10 and 55 Hudson Yards are 100% leased, and 50 Hudson Yards is already more than 90% spoken for even before it’s finished.

“ We could start building another office tower right now,” Blau said. “We’re out of room” for tenants eager to pay $200 a square foot for space.

Blau cited other factors that should make Related the odds-on favorite, such as access to the expanded No. 7 subway line and other mass transit, and the fact that no buildings or people would be disrupted because the western yard is empty.
Quote:
The next round of the casino selection process will likely be in July when the suitors meet with the state, before making their final proposals in the fall. The state’s Gaming Commission, controlled by Hochul, is expected to announce the winners by the end of the year.

The three licenses will add $1.5 billion to the state’s cash-strapped budget.
