Right. And Greenblatt's first moved into that building in 1940 or '41. For the previous two years, Greenblatt's had been located one block east of it. F. Scott Fitzgerald's last "meal" --a chocolate bar-- allegedly came from Greenblatt's.

A couple years ago the Huntington accessioned a large collection of slides shot by a character named Palmer Conner; little is known about him save that he roamed postwar downtown and captured a whole lot of now-lost LA. They've begun scanning them and putting them online, as we found out recently. The Huntington uploaded twenty-nine and I've been checking regularly for the next grouping -- today they brought it up to fifty. Gems galore! Here are just a handful.

First off, here's something you don't see every day: the Martz Flats, in living color!

I should mention that the collection is not all downtown-centered. For example, Conner was interested enough in the demolition of the Getty "Sunset Boulevard" house at Wilshire & Irving to go out and photograph it in February 1957:

In one photo I can see what could be my old red & white Plymouth car. Who knows...I could be driving it in that photo [but I seriously doubt it].

One detail that really caught my eye: the sign for "MACHIN Shirtmakers". From the early 1900s to the 1950s (when its cachet began to fade), "Machin" was the custom shirtmaker of choice for Los Angeles's elites: bankers, movie stars, oil men, etc. Its only real competitor was a shirtmaker named J.T. Beach, who was favored by Clark Gable.

Not a very nice location for such a business, eh?

Thank you Chuckaluck. Its very interesting the one with the DINE DANCE Playclub, that substituted the Liberty. As you can see none of the pictures show the building on the left, the 262 South Main Street. In the case of that picture it was already cleared.

In the early fifties I would go with my Mom to downtown to shop. Most kids hated that idea but I liked it. It meant taking the Red Car on Sunset and Silverlake through the tunnel to the Subway Terminal Building, which I enjoyed. I remember one trip to the Paris Embroidery Shop distinctly after visiting the Broadway and the May Co.. Every time a photo comes up of building where the Paris was it brings back very pleasant memories.

Thanks Beaudry for this gem. It is the first time on the thread that we're able to see how looked the complete east section between 2nd and 1st of Grand Avenue. I recognized the modern building (right) which we see in the beginning of the famous video "A Drive Through Bunker Hill (1940s)". I always wondered how looked this section that the car leaves behind coming from east 2nd.
