Thanks, unihikid, your description was perfect. It is the Dream Center, which is the former Queen of Angels Hospital at Bellevue and Waterloo Street. Using Google's Earth view I moved back to find the William Simpson Construction building still standing. It's not Beverly Hills, it's 2401 Beverly Boulevard.

I'm not sure what's up with Photobucket (again!), but all my images are scaled to 1024 px wide. There's a note in my settings page that linking to the original size is shortly going to be discontinued, but nothing of any use on their help pages. Several people have complained on their Facebook page, but they always reply with "send us an email". If Photobucket have removed the option to link to anything wider than 1024 px, they have just wasted countless hours/days of my time. I hope there's a sufficient backlash among their paying customers (of which I'm one) to sort things out once and for all. If they don't address our needs, they deserve to go under.

Yes! Weren't the roller derby broadcasts sponsored by Barr Clothing at 5th and La Brea? I think it was on the NE corner.

Your address guided me to this second slide, also dated 1957, that must have been taken by the same photographer.
If you look closely, you can see a glimpse of Central Chevrolet.

I thought we had seen this building before, but I searched and didn't find it here. Anyway, it was built in 1933 by Dr. George C. Green.
The last building permit for the structure is from 1959, and Dr. Green was still the owner. The building is still occupied by a veterinarian.

The 1969 LA Street Address Directory shows a "Barr Mfg Co" at 468 S. La Brea, but the phone number is the same as in the ad below for 6th and La Brea:

I found this map at Legacies of L.A. and they attribute it to "Venice Short Line Map courtesy of metro.net and CalTrans."

While searching for the Venice Short Line map I found this interesting story that happened on the line at the intersection of Venice Blvd. and Lincoln Blvd.

Rescue and cleanup crews work on a horrific wreck involving a truck and Pacific Electric interurban on March 23, 1942.

P.E.Org.

Information gathered from commenters on these photographs:

--According to the L.A. Times report, the train was a westbound limited, which hit the army truck then derailed and struck the automobile, and all three then “jammed against a light post and a signal and burst into flames which demolished the truck.” Ten soldiers and eight civilians were injured and/or burned, several critically, and “more than twoscore passengers” as well as the motorman E.M.Adams and conductor R.D. Holbrook escaped injury. (That last sentence is grammatically confusing, but is the way it was written.)

--The license plate on the back of the car next to the truck is a 1941 plate with a 1942 date strip along the top, the only year CA used a strip along the entire length of the plate and the first year that CA did not issue a new plate for that year except for new registrants.

--PE 958 was repaired and returned to service; not scrapped until 1950.

--The brick building in the upper right hand corner above the gas station is still standing.

Martin Pal, you beat me to a scan of this map but here is a bit more information.

This map was originally produced by Ray Younghans, Associate Editor for Lines of Pacific Electric - Western District, published by Interurbans, an Ira L. Swett publication, Volume 16, No. 6 - December 1957.

These volumes covering PE's Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern districts (some with separate supplements) come up on ebay from time to time and are an excellent resource for information on Pacific Electric. Other Interurbans publications cover PE predecessor Los Angeles Pacific and Los Angeles Railway.

Ray Younghans produced maps for nearly all of them, and although they are not to scale they provide excellent details.

Thanks for the supplemental information on the 1942 PE/truck accident. Whe have seen the photos before, but without a detailed explanation until now.

The "garage" in the photo was Ocean Park Car House. It was remodeled into a bus garage after the Venice Short Line was converted to motor coach operation in 1950. It's now L.A. Metro's Division 6. Please see my response to MartinPal's post re: PE maps.

I'm afraid I can't help ID the location of the second image, er. But as sometimes happens here, I profoundly wish I could step through my monitor's screen - in period costume, of course - into that scene and then just keep going.

So Wig-Wag beat me to the replay to Martin Pal that I was going to post re: the Younghans map. One has to be pretty quick on the draw around these parts!

I do have one more comment, though: I know that there's a hard copy PE system map that exists (ca. 1920s) which includes every stop. I'll search for it when I get a chance, not sure if I have it in my files or if it's available on-line.

P.S., I echo Wig-Wag's thanks to Martin Pal on the info re: the wreck.

This Julius Shulman set only has two photos in it. It's "Job 594: Wurdeman & Becket, General Petroleum Company Building, H. A. Bercu and Son Pipe Shop (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1949, 1950". The writing on the left says "Wines and Spirits, Domestic and Imported Candies", while on the right it says "English Pipes, Havana Cigars, Smoking Accessories". Of course, laws relating to Havana cigars are starting to change at the moment after a 54 year ban.

The 1956 CD lists the address as 612 S Flower Street, which is now just an entrance to the Pegasus Apartments. By 1960, the business had moved to 3325 Wilshire Boulevard, which would place it in the Tishman building that I posted Shulman photos of in post #34846.

I have this hanging in my room,next to a AAA freeway map circa 1988.. Im thinking this is the map you're talking about. When i went to the OERM about 5 years ago they were selling these. The cool thing is that the freeway system that we have now follows the ROW of the 1920's PE map.

That appears to be the Queen Of Angels hospital. It was the hospital for the Ross-Loos medical group which was the health provider for L. A. city and county workers for many years. My brother was born there in 1951 and I remember visiting my mother at the hospital where she had several surgeries.
