I'd say it's a reference to the same guy as the blog link I included is all about motorcycles and hot rods and the blog writer (Rich) owns: a "no frills" custom motorcycle and fabrication shop. Rich has been involved with custom motorcycles and hot rods for over 44 years, and is a member of the Sinners, out of Southern California.

I went back and looked, but could find no other reference to that bar on that particular blog.
____

I did just find a reference to the bar in this LINK where someone writes:

Dick Hirschberg, who built some of the finest post-bobber/pre-chopper Harley customs, started the Galloping Goose MC in the forties. All the online accounts of the club's formation spell his name differently (Hershberg) so I checked with Irish Rich [He writes the blog I found the original info on], who told me: "It's the same Dick Hirschberg. Hirschberg had a bar across the street from Union Station (train) in Downtown L.A. during WWII. It was the Cosmopolitan, or the All-American – something like that. From what Mike Parti confirmed for me, Hirschberg had a white Knuckle he parked out front. It had Galloping Goose painted on the tanks, and the running "Third Finger" on it, too.

It's been a while since I've posted Julius Shulman photos of a school, so here's Marlton School, a public school for deaf and hard of hearing students. It's "Job 5080: Sidney Eisenshtat, Marlton School (Los Angeles, Calif.),1974". The first two images show the impressive curve of the building.
NB. The set also includes two color images (which appear to be the same), but I've stuck with the black & white ones.

The last two images show a slope between floors.

All from Getty Research Institute

The school can be found at 4000 Santo Tomas Drive, only a couple of blocks from the Broadway-Crenshaw Center that we've seen a couple of times recently. I couldn't get any satifactory views from the GoogleMobile, so I've gone for an aerial. I think the skylight in the center is above the slope seen in the last two Shulman images.

Google Maps

The squarish building at the left of the curve gained a mural in 2009. I think it's supposed to say "DEAF PRIDE" in sign language in the lower-left corner, but the "F" looks more like a "9" to me.

A prior from 2012, with a LAT article on the Eisele dealership here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=6451 (Eisele had been selling Lincolns and Mercurys in Huntington Park since 1946 and sold the dealership there not long after opening the Wilshire location.)

I'm hoping Mr. Shulman shot another building that sounds intriguing: the J.A. Eisele Lincoln-Mercury dealership at 11750 Wilshire. It opened May 8, 1953 and took up a whole block. Per the Times it had "a swimming pool for the use of customers, a new type translucent plastic roof for outdoor displays, a huge daylighted showroom crowned by a crystal chandelier from New Orleans, and more than a mile and half of fluorescent tube lights..." A pool, really?

HenryHuntington and Flyingwedge, thanks so much for establishing the location of last night's 'mystery' slide as 5th & Figueroa.

I located a second slide that shows the same location, but from a different angle.

old file / http://archive.is/www.davesrailpix.com ?

Once again, the corner building (with the zig-zag roof-line) is hidden behind the streetcar.

Here is last night's slide again. -for a quick comparison.

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=34324

"I am especially curious about the bluish building with the undulating 'wave-like' roof-line."

Here's another pic. that has me stumped.

old file /

The box-like streetcar is being trailed by a police cruiser. It looks like there's an overpass up ahead.

Here's a fine looking turn-of-the-century home.

There are two different addresses on this one.

eBay

I think the address with the 1/2 is probably the address of the photography studio; the 'Hinton' address on the right is in an area of mid-century homes.

In other words, I wasn't able to locate the house.

Here's a page from the USC Alumni Review, dated NOV. 1937.

I thought if any of the professors are listed in the city directories we might be able to locate their homes.

The 1906 Los Angeles Street and Avenue Guide at the LA Public Library shows a J. J. Bodkin living at
936 Hinton Avenue. Hinton Avenue is now N. Beaudry Avenue, but there's no house on that stretch of
N. Beaudry that looks like the one in your photo, e_r.

We're looking eastward on First St. at Main St. The wedge of green halfway up the left edge of the frame is the City Hall south lawn. The modern building along the upper half of the left edge is Parker Center (née Police Administration Building). The streetcar is an LATL tower car used for maintenance of overhead wire.

Were there really so few buildings of more than a couple of stories near First and Main? It doesn't seem possible. When I first saw this picture, I thought it must be the "desert"* area along Wilshire east of the Miracle Mile.

*I don't know how it is now, but somewhere around 1987 or 88 I took a training class at the Digital Equipment Corporation building that used to be along there, not far from the Sands Motel. A few of us went out for lunch during the break, thinking we'd surely find some place just walking along the boulevard...and there was nothing. Nothing at all.

I worked in Parker Center for 26 years and most of those buildings you see down First are in Little Tokyo and were still there when I retired in 98. Parker opened in 1955 and the Police car you see behind the streetcar is a 56 Chev. so that makes the picture about 56 or 57 maybe 58 as Police cars rack up miles fast and are replaced often.

Here's an aerial.

I wonder if this ornamental area (red arrow below) is still intact?

I can't tell if it's fountains or a formal garden.

Thanks once again for your expertise HH. -it's much appreciated.

'mystery' location.

old file/ maybe eBay

If only the photographer had captured a little more of that building on the hill.......................................................................

-also note the wooden guard rails; makes me think this might be a temporary route.

A mom poses with her daughter prior to leaving for Los Angeles.

I wonder if they're both going on the journey, or only the daughter.

'mystery' location (from "Internet Movie Cars Database")

This screen-grab from the 1954 version of the 'A Star Is Born' shows a 1938 Ford COE Truck.

http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_258130-Ford-COE-1938.html

But here on NLA, we're also interested in the location. Does anyone recognize the building with the corner turret?
