It seems to me that if you then search for posts about Motordrome, it wouldn't search this particular post with Motordrome because it's in the "quote" section.

If that makes sense to you, am I correct about this?
I always use Google to search the thread, and it happily finds text in quotations (I just tested it to make sure). In fact, I think it often lists the post with the quote higher up due to it being more recent. For anyone who wants a reminder of the Google method, it's something like this:

Code:
site:forum.skyscraperpage.com noirish motordrome
For extra keywords, you can either just add them ...

Code:
site:forum.skyscraperpage.com noirish palace hotel
- should find posts/pages with Palace Hotel and Hotel Palace.

or combine them into a single term with quotes:

Code:
site:forum.skyscraperpage.com noirish "signal oil"
- will only look for signal oil, not signal and oil.

It's not perfect, but it seems to be better than the forum's search feature.

If people post things in photos, I guess I'm saying you should try to make sure, for search purposes, that the names in the photos are written in your posts somewhere, either in the title or the message. Even if you just wrote them at the end of it, like:

Motordrome, Monkey Island, Chapman Park Hotel, Catalina Sugar-Loaf--or something.

Of course, I'd rather have the posts than not at all!

Sorry for the SIDEBAR.
I made the same point myself a few months ago. As I said at the time, it's hard to name everything in a picture, and I know I've been guilty of not always giving a full description. I think generally, most contributors are doing a good job of naming what they post these days, and no one springs to mind as a repeat offender .

Tourmaline's black & white photograph showed the devastating fire at the Cooper Lumber Yard.

In this photo (below) the charred remains of the lumber yard can be seen at the left edge.

Thanks for locating the building Flyingwedge.

I didn't post the 1903 photograph sooner because I was trying to figure out that 'smokestack' building. -so I appreciate the help.

I wonder if [Richard Rosser] ever was given an Athletic Model Guild calling-card. That's how they snared their 10,000 specimens to photograph. Bob Mizer and his friends often visited Muscle Beach, Venice, CA and handed out the card to possible boy models. I doubt if one could do that today. But in those days things were more innocent.

If they checked 3., that means you take off your clothes ''for free", which is exactly what Mizer wanted. It was all in the hopes that Hollywood movie studio AMG exposure would make them a ''star''.

I kinda doubt "A51" meant August 1951 b/c April.

(And don't be silly, Casinos don't take photos, not even delightful ones.)

Hi folks. CBD got it. The "technical" term for the "chimney" structure Hidden in the photo) is "sawdust burner". They were used to burn sawdust and scrap lumber.

At one time they were a feature of nearly every sawmill in the country and most lumber yards. I believe they were banned in LA about the same time as incinerators. One can be seen here:

http://www.pacificelectric.org/categ...trict/page/29/

Scroll down to the photo captioned "Leaning into it".

Cheers,
Jack

You're absolutely correct CityBoyDoug. It was confusing because the white roof of the street-car blocked the flue beneath the "beehive burner",
making it look like the 'beehive' ('bird-cage thingy' ) was sitting on the roof.

Wig-Wag sent me this message.

"Note that the Cooper Lumber Company is in the background. Back then most lumber yards had sawdust burners
where they burned scrap cuttings and sawdust. What you are seeing is the wire spark arrestor at the top of a burner."
-Jack.

Yet the Cooper Lumber Company burnt down. Was this the culprit?

I got a clue from Tourmaline and your post ER as to what we were actually looking at. All I did was connect the dots. Much fun.

I briefly spoke about the clock atop the Pac-Mu building a few days ago.

Here's a snapshot without the clock...instead there is a United Airlines sign.
(note that it also says "Route of the Mainliners" on the building at street level.

Bullock's Pasadena

Thank you for the reminders of Bullock's Pasadena e_r. A fabulous store.

I cannot now find a photo of the Bullock's Pasadena top floor restaurant. It was a beautiful room with big, deep, armless chairs at the tables. Giant plate-glass windows gave excellent views. Really glamorous.

I don't think I've been in it since the early 80s.

ER.....My guess for the ''hotel address'' is that's the location the bus left for LAX.

The airport buses used to leave from the hotels such as the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena and others.
Today in 2015, LAX transportation is mostly all done by door to door Shuttle vans. The airport buses are an item from the past.
[There are a few airport buses left....one may leave from Disneyland.]

Does anyone recognize this apartment building?

This is how it's listed in the Huntington Archive. -->"Buildings Miscellaneous. -An apartment building."

The Date of the photograph is 1/30/1912.

Here's a large detail.

I, too, thought that was on the roof of the street-car stop!

Lots of knowledgeable people here that have answers to nearly every question that comes up! Amazing and kudos.

Well, except I am still trying to find out definitively what this thing is on the roof of The Virginia & The Jade building!

Here's another rather eye-catching apartment building.

1/30/1912

http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/landin...on/p16003coll2

"The Schue Apartments, showing a vacant lot on the right, and apartments on the left."

I searched "Schue" and even "Shue" with no results.

Schue Apartments

I'd say those are single-family homes on the left. There's some nice carriage houses facing the alley on the right.

PS: The Schue apartmenthouse is very reminiscent of 666 S Bonnie Brae

The Palace Apartments at 1361 Sunset Blvd.

I've been looking for a vintage photograph of the place before the storefronts were added.

below: There are some funky things going on with this building....for instance, the unicorn's head.

detail / gsv

I've been trying to figure out what that brown metal box is to the right of the entrance.

LARy had other shuttle lines
This may be on the east side of LA
IIRC Edgeware was a single track- it may still be in the pavement, as that neighborhood- well, some folks in it, had a website about it
But this is double track
