No I don't dude, it was just an example in my discussion with phillyfan. Next time I'll use corporation X instead of Comcast.

Having tall buildings, vibrancy, residents, jobs, people isn't going to hurt Drexel or Penn. It will only make them stronger and more inviting.

I know there is a sentiment here that skylines are irrelevant and they serve little purpose. I call BS on that. 4 Mile continuous Skyline is a calling card only a few cities in the world can claim, Philadelphia has that potential. You add a string of eye catching 400' + towers from 30th to 40th extending the already impressive skyline and you start to really get peoples attention.

Its ridiculous to say WHOA that's it , the skyline stops at 31st. We're Drexel or We're Penn. No NO No . This is the city of Philadlephia not the city of Penn or Drexel.

That statement completely disregards the importance of Penn--Philly's largest private employer and one of its wealthiest institutions--and Drexel to Philly in general, and to University City in particular. You're living in a fantasy world if you think that Penn and Drexel don't have a MAJOR say in what happens in University City. Penn and Drexel--and also CHOP--ARE University City, and there isn't much large-scale private development that's going to happen in University City if Penn, Drexel, or CHOP directly, or through their creation the Science Center, are against it.

Demo of the two 'historic' brownstones that were at the epicenter of the debate began in earnest on Thursday (as in one is already half gone) -- I'll try to post a pic soon before it's all just rubble, but they've been moving quickly so far.

Demo still ongoing. I'm sure the snow and cold slowed some things up

It's kind of puzzling why they left that one house intact sitting in the middle of the site with site work going on on both sides.

At first glance, that would seem like a kind of stupid thing to do.

Anybody have a clue what the rationale is in this case?

It can only really be one of two things: either the owner didn't want to sell, or it's some kind of landmark.

But that's the puzzling thing - this building right smack in the middle of the new building foot print. It's coming down. I just wonder why they are waiting.

Yeah, I see what you mean, now. Maybe, they they had some kind of purchase agreement that gave the owner so much time to clear the place out, and it just happened to be longer than anyone not familiar with the deal knew. Interesting, nonetheless.

But that's the really puzzling thing. All of the low-rise buildings were historic; the deal was to sacrifice them to build this building whose rents would be used to maintain the (also-historic) cathedral right next door. This is because the cathedral owns all of the properties, which in turn rules out reticent seller syndrome. So there is no good reason why that one building, and that one building alone, has not been demolished.

Building is owned by others...owner would not sell at a reasonable price...building around him...

Hmmm. That's odd. Not in any of the news stories or renderings. where did you learn this info?

So that ugly old house indeed will remain.
