So, just to clarify, we are looking at the two level podium up to the blue tarp, than above that, the amenities level, and then 2 floors of residential?

And they are currently pouring the 3rd level of residential balconys?

Thanks,

Asheesh
No, currently the 6th (7th? can't tell too well from that angle) floor is being poured; the 4th floor, which is the first floor pictured with the curved edges, is the first floor of the hotel - as for those first few floors, the curve of the cantilever will not be noticeable, only at the edges; not until you get towards the end of the hotel portion (floors 12 -18 perhaps) will the curve be more pronounced.

Yeah, nice catch on the corners, asheesh88. Here's a closer view.

Thanks sentinel. I'd heard though the grapevine the San Francisco restaurant you've referred to is fittingly called "Aqua".

Another thing of interest: I had a curious hunch about the lower, hotel portion of the building today because someone had mentioned that the rendering above is slightly out of date, so I was curious about what was being inferred, so I looked at the CDs today and sure enough there is a minor change (which also contradicts an earlier statement by yours truly, so I apologize because I was wrong): the hotel floors (4-18) will not have wavy balconies as previously envisioned - they will all be like the slab edge as pictured by Solarwind above. As far as I can tell on the CDs, that is what is shown. Not a MASSIVE change, because the rest of the balconies above the 18th floor will look like the rendering above but a noteworthy one still.

I'm concerned on how this will impact the look of the building, since the bottom section of the building is now strictly a rectangular shape. Seems to be a sharp departure from the rest of the tower. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it looks and make our judgments then.

Any idea why this change was made? Was it dictated by the hotel?

^ you know, i think its the way its meant to be. it allows for a gradual change from plain box to the building's signature style

Looking at the above rendering, are the balconies to be the natural concrete color or are they to be painted?

^^Not yet certain, I will post something once I find out - as for the balcony change from the previous rendering, I agree in that I think a more gradual change in the shape the higher up you go looks better overall, instead of just throwing that curved feature right at the beginning - even in a building as unconventional as this, there is still a need for restraint sometimes, perhaps due to some pragmatic issue, I'm not certain yet.

Memorial to Fallen Firefighters Unveiled

Hundreds of firefighters, community and
business leaders, elected officials and community residents gathered today
as the Chicago Fire Department's Engine 13 unveiled a memorial statue to
recognize and honor the proud work and sacrifice of fallen firefighter
Walter Watroba. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of Watroba and all
Chicago firefighters who have lost their lives in service to the City of
Chicago.

...
The memorial is temporarily located outside Engine 13, and will be
permanently installed in Spring 2009, when construction is complete on the
neighboring Aqua building. An undulating garden wall between Engine 13 and
Aqua will give the sculpture a landscaped backdrop and provide a shaded
seating area for visitors off Columbus Drive at Lake Street. Loewenberg
Architects, Magellan Development Group, McHugh Construction, Studio Gang
Architects and Wolff Landscape Architecture worked to create the permanent
site design in which the memorial will be placed.

Personally, I'm a bit disappointed to hear that the wavy balconies won't start until floor 19. How long has this been the case? I'm so used to seeing these renderings with the waves going all the way down. Hope it still looks good on those lower floors.

In the rendering above, there is a floor that's about 2/3 of the way up without any balconies. To me, that's a noticeable visual gap. Is that a mechanical floor?

Kind of ironic that the firefighters memorial will be in a neighborhood with so much water imagery. What more fitting place than next to Aqua.

There is a fire station directly east of that memorial, right next to the Aqua, I think that is why it's located there.

that new rendering with the firefighters memorial looks pretty nice. i mean, as far as podiums go...

and the rendering of the podium in post 2044 isn't that bad, either. what would be better, no podium at all?

That building looks like a hot water radiator in the sky to warm up Chicago in the winter.

Well I have good news and bad news: the bad news is I'm an idiot and apparently don't know how to read drawings - so disregard my previous post about the balcony slabs not being curved, for the 14 floors of the hotel portion; the problem arose because on the CDs there is a rectangular grid around the whole balcony areas which acts as a way to define how the curving portion of the cantilever is built - I thought that was the actual extent/look of the slab edge, i.e., squared off, which is not the case, only the 4th floor slab is rectangular, the other floors WILL have curves, which is the good news; Sorry I'm an idiot...
