Alas, the building has outlived the business.

Nothing last forever, but I wonder which retail business currently operating in Los Angeles has been around the longest.
Gelson's supermarkets have been around since the 1950s. The first one was in Burbank on Victory at Hollywood Way. My mom used to shop there and knew Bernie Gelson, the founder. Now it has many branches all over SoCal, mostly in affluent areas. It is known for its quality produce and meats. Of course the original McDonalds started in San Bernardino in the early 1950s as seen in the film "the Founder". There is also an early branch in Downey. All the SoCal big dept stores are long gone ...Bullocks, the Broadway, Robinsons, Barker Bros. etc. I think the rest. chains Carl's Jr., IHOP, InNOut, Norm's, Bob's Big Boy were founded in the area long ago, and are still around, although Bobs has shrunk to just a few locations (or just the one in Burbank?).

A little searching says that currently there are 5 remaining Bob's Big Boy locations:
Burbank (Toluca Lake, Riverside Dr.), Calimesa, Downey, Norco, and Northridge.

This snapshot taken in Hollywood was just listed on. . .yep, you guessed it. . . eBay

I recognize the tower in the distance as the Hollywood First National Bank building so I believe we're looking north on. .um. .Highland Ave., right?

eBay

The back of the photograph merely says "Hollywood".

Let's take a closer look.

Can anyone read the signs just past the side-street on the left - - - - - - - - >

Oh, and one more thing, does anyone have an idea what building is under construction? (on the right)

P.S. That's an attractive woman.

Judging by this next snapshot I'd say the photographer kept walking north on Highland.

eBay

A very nice view of the late-great Hollywood Hotel.

The reverse.

Let's take a closer look!

It looks like that car is parked on the front lawn.

That's Pat Hitchcock wearing the glasses.

That's who she reminds me of, anyway.

Up the street you can see the (pointy roof) corner of the Hollywood Hotel.

I like the pine tree in the photograph. There are still tall pine trees in some streets West of the High School. (On Lanewood Avenue, particularly.)

Any guess on the year the photo was taken?

When I was a kid I used to love their cheeseburger & fries, with a milkshake. Back in the 1970s would see a lot of stars in the one in Burbank near NBC. Saw Johnny Carson in there once, and Bob Hope twice. Leno used to show up in the parking lot with his rare cars. Maybe he still does, but haven't been there for a long time. Supposedly the Beatles ate there after their 1960s concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I wonder what happened to Bob's? Used to be so popular. Same thing with the Hamburger Hamlet. Once everywhere. Great hamburgers. Now all gone? Sizzlers used to be common. Are they gone too?

Imagine my surprise today while up on Sunset Blvd. seeing Filthy McNasty's.

Video Link

A little bit of searching tells me the redressing was being done this past weekend, Nov. 6th.

Video Link

It's for a miniseries titled Daisy Jones & The Six which follows "a rock band in the 1970's from their rise in the LA music scene to becoming one of the most legendary bands in the world and explores the reason behind their split at the height of their success." The upcoming Amazon series is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's book of the same name, which the author describes was partly inspired by her experience growing up and watching Fleetwood Mac performances on television.

Video Link

When I went by today they were filming on that side of the street from Larrabee to San Vicente. There were several period cars parked along the curb on Sunset.
A Jaguar was in there somewhere.

Here's a night shot on Reddit at this link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/...om_in_costume/

And night video:

Video Link

The Sunset Strip Liquor Store at 8860 Sunset Boulevard has also been converted back to The Sun Bee Food Mart for the Daisy Jones & the Six production.

The Vega ran well if the untested aluminum engine had new pistons and cylinder sleeves.
Too bad that the body rusted. Another GM Lordstown nightmare product.

Fantastic images of Chinatown, riichkay. ...

Here's another one of those Hollywood snapshots.

When I first glanced at the photo I thought the building in the distance (on the right) was Earl Carroll's Theater on Sunset.

eBay

It isn't. What we're looking at is the construction site of the Capitol Records Building. (how cool is that!)

So, yes, we're looking north on Vine from near Hollywood Blvd.

Let's take a closer look.

ebay

I believe the B C is for N B C. It's the old Hollywood Playhouse / El Capitan Theater that was converted to a television studio. (later it would become A B C)

Here's a photo from the same time period.

storyofhollywood

Note - the Gruen sign still says El Capitan.

As most of you know, we have visited the theater numerous times over the years on nla. . but I believe there's some information in the text (below) that we didn't cover.

Courtesy of historictheatrephotos

"The name of the theater was changed to El Capitan in mid-1942. Ken Murray’s variety show “Blackouts of 1942”, was received favorably and led to a seven year run of “Blackouts” shows.

In 1949 CBS offered Ken Murray a television show but stipulated that it had to be broadcast from New York. Thus ended the long run of the “Blackouts” shows, and Charles Toberman sold the theatre to the Catholic church, who in turn leased the building to NBC. NBC initially stuck with the El Capitan name, or at least that is how it was commonly referred to, but by 1952 it was firmly branded as an NBC Television location.

The Los Angeles Times reported rumors of NBC’s interest in buying the theatre as early as February 1951, however the rumors were rebuffed by engineers who said that the theatre was “not quite suitable for big-scale TV operations since it has no back entrance for scenery shifts and storage”. A month later, in late March 1951, the newspaper reported that the theatre had been sold “presumably to NBC” and would likely become a television house. By mid-September the newspaper reported that NBC was planning a $1 million renovation job on the theatre.

The first show to be broadcast from NBC’s newest studio was The Colgate Comedy Hour, starring Eddie Cantor et al, on 30th September 1951. The opening of the show utilized establishing shots of Hollywood & Vine with the hosts walking up the street to the theatre and through its entrance doors. Hollywood had firmly established itself on television.

Hot on its heels was The Bob Hope Show broadcast on Sunday 14th October 1951. In mid-June 1952 the first coast-to-coast telethon was held at the theatre; a star-studded 14.5 hour event to raise money for the US Olympics Team.

On 23rd September 1952 Richard Nixon broadcast his famous “Checkers” speech from the theatre. At his request the sole audience member in the theatre was his wife, however the half-hour speech was broadcast across the nation and was heard or seen by some 60 million Americans.

In 1963 ABC purchased the theatre and, following a $400,000 renovation, renamed it the Jerry Lewis Theatre with it becoming the home of the The Jerry Lewis Show from September 1963. The success of the show was short-lived and it was replaced by a one-hour variety show: The Hollywood Palace, which started its run on 4th January 1964. The show went on to run for over six years and featured the U.S. television début of the Rolling Stones”.

Things I learned:

I didn't know the Catholic Church (at one point in time) owned the building.

I didn't know Nixon's famous "Checkers" speech was broadcast from the theater.

I thought the "Jerry Lewis Show" debacle happened at the other El Capitan Theater. (on Hollywood Blvd.)

To read about the theater's early history go Here.

Here's one more snapshot for tonight.

We're looking at the Hollywood Brown Derby on Vine St.

It looks like a group of servicemen decided to furlough in Hollywood.

A closer look.

I did cover that in a 2018 post, E_R, here:

Other politicians running for high office that I know of who have made speeches at the El Capitan/Avalon:
Bill Clinton (1992)
Pete Buttigieg (2019)

That linked post has a youtube link to some great color home movie footage outside the theatre and in the parking lot before a 1953 Colgate Comedy Hour broadcast and shows some of the stars (Martin & Lewis, Abbott & Costello among others) getting out of their cars.

I liked in the article you quoted it said, "The success of the show was short-lived."

Success? LOL!

That link also says The Merv Griffin Show was done there. I've not been able to verify in any way that he did his show there or not at the moment*, but after he moved the show from New York to Hollywood, it was mostly done at the TAV Celebrity Center Theater south of the Huntington Hartford on Vine Street at Selma, as far as I know. The game shows he produced also taped there: Wheel of Fortune, Love Connection and Jeopardy.
______

*EDITED TO ADD: The Merv Griffin website says that after the show had been in New York City in the 60's, in at least two separate filming locations: "By the start of the 1970-71 season, Merv had relocated the show to CBS’s “Television City” in Hollywood. (That's the first I read that anywhere, too.)

Then: "After departing the CBS airwaves on February 11, 1972, The Merv Griffin Show resumed production on March 6, 1972 at the famed Hollywood Palace Theater on Vine Street." (Check!)

The next info related to where it was done is when it talks about Merv's last show in 1986: "at the TAV Celebrity Theater, the show’s home base for the past decade."

So the show may have been at the "Hollywood Palace" location from 1972-76?

By the way TAV stands for Trans America Video Celebrity Theater.

I attended a filming of the Merv Griffin Show at the Palace theater as a VIP. It was two hours, as they filmed 2 shows. There was a big mix-up with my tickets so I called King World Productions and they gave us VIP status. That meant that my name went on a list and we sat in the front rows.

Martin-Pal, your original post on the El Capitan and Nixon's Checkers Speech is excellent. I'm surprised it slipped my mind.

And I shouldn't have changed the word within the quotes but The Jerry Lewis Show was truly a debacle for ABC.

I'm beginning to remember that we discussed the hydraulic lift attached to Jerry Lewis' chair so he could hilariously go up and down. The French loved it. lol

It's a bit hard to see.

todayifoundout

A King's ransom for anyone who can find a clip of the chair going up and down. (I believe it would go really high. .like several feet!)

Yes, I'm obsessed with the chair.

Clarification:

I'm talking about the 1963 Jerry Lewis Show. There was a second Jerry Lewis Show shortly there-after 5 years later. (see below)

The story is fascinating.

Here's the best explanation of what rent wrong on opening night by Eddie Deezen

by Eddie Deezen at TodayIFoundOut

The show only lasted four weeks.

actofcompassionate

. . .from September 21, 1963 to December 21, 1963.

A tale of hubris.

Here's an item that was listed on eBay (a month or so ago) that isn't a Hollywood snapshot.

Maclay Ave. and San Fernando Blvd. or in San Fernando?

I love this next one even despite it being in bad shape.

found on eBay

It shows a workman setting up tourist tents in Venice, California.

Here's a closer look. I tried to improve the image but no dice.

He's a rather handsome, brawny young man.

"City of Venice, 1905" is written on the back.
