Right. It's a shock to some that the United States are not a Democracy, and never were intended to be. Folks may not like the balancing act achieved, but a Republic is what we were given "if you can keep it." Otherwise it's "E pluribus.... pluribus"

Even if I can't love this project, I do appreciate little efforts like this.

seems like trees will also go up here given the tree pits waiting to be filled. this is not a gorgeous building, but it is 10x better in person than i was expecting

I'm glad. However, while I'm one to say that something is better than nothing (or what was there), this corner was screaming for a high-rise.

a high rise and/or any degree of architectural detail would have been awesome. but, now that there is a grocery store here, the corner really IS screaming for a high rise... and hopefully one is on the way on the opposite corner. I think the Giant is a huge catalyst for further development all around the area

Philadelphia Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson failed to disclose income from a rental property
A spokesperson for Johnson attributed the problems with his financial disclosure and his wife's failure to secure rental licenses to a series of errors.

by Ryan W. Briggs and Sean Collins Walsh
Jun 27, 2022

Philadelphia City Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson failed to disclose rental income from last year on his financial disclosure form, and his wife operated three rental units without the required licenses until late May, The Inquirer found in a review of property and ethics records.

Johnson said through a spokesperson that he is amending his disclosure reports to include the improperly omitted income, which he attributed to paperwork errors.

His wife, Dawn Chavous, struggled to obtain rental licenses for a variety of factors including the city’s new lead certification requirements, the spokesperson said.

The facades on the two buildings going up around the York traffic circle are slowly being installed - they look FANTASTIC. As soon as they are finished and the scaffolding comes down I will take a pic. That little circle is going to feel like such a cool little hub of activity.

Also, demo permits are posted on the old Furfari's pretzel building, so I expect that building to get under way in the coming months.

I wonder if Lauren Vidas or another viable candidate will run against him next year? Her campaign was very small, but she gave him a run for his money last time. Might be the right time to make a move on KJ, but it would still be longshot (which is sad).

Missed this yesterday, but this is pretty cool. Makes sense for Jefferson to have a presence there given the proximity to their East Falls campus.

The Jefferson Institute of Bioprocessing to Bring Biologics Training to Budd Bioworks

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) and Plymouth Group announced today that JIB’s biotechnician training program will move into space at Budd Bioworks.

JIB’s training services will enable life-changing therapies developed in Philadelphia’s “Cellicon Valley” to be supported by a well-trained bioprocessing workforce. JIB will provide training services remotely and in the Budd Innovation Center located at 2450 W. Hunting Park Avenue.

“The partnership with JIB creates a fantastic resource to support the growth of the life science ecosystem within Philadelphia and provides a tangible validation of the transformation of our campus into a key location for innovation,” said Michael Davis, Founding Principal of the Plymouth Group, developer of Budd Bioworks. “Our goal is to help spur economic opportunity across the region and support the expansion of a well-trained workforce equipped to produce the pioneering cures of tomorrow.”

A specialty program of Thomas Jefferson University, JIB provides pre-clinical process development, product development, analytical, quality control, stability and release testing, world-class industry training, and strong credential programs through its university partnership. JIB’s biopharmaceuticals and biologics support typically encompass development areas devoted to therapeutic programs, including proteins, monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, bispecific, and antibody drug conjugates. JIB also support cell and gene therapy, next-generation vaccines and viral vectors.

“We are excited about working with the Bioprocessing Training Center at Budd Bioworks,” said Dr. Parviz Shamlou, Vice President at Thomas Jefferson University and Executive Director of the Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing. “As Budd Bioworks builds and grows, so could the training programs, which could be provided at all levels from entry operators to advanced programs for people who need to update their knowledge of a particular area.”

Thomas Jefferson University Chief Operating Officer Kathy Gallagher added, “JIB is designed to meet critical workforce needs in an innovative fashion. With science, health, design, engineering and business established as our University’s legacy programs, JIB is uniquely positioned to train not only the experts of the future, but can keep the experts of today up-to-date with the latest advances in the field.”

With this new relationship, JIB will be expanding upon the success of its core bioprocessing training facility and bringing its proven training programs to more audiences.

Budd Bioworks is a transformative redevelopment of the former Budd Company steel stamping plant in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park neighborhood into a world-class home for discovery to production, supporting the needs for life sciences at all stages within a 30-acre urban campus. It is located less than 15 minutes from Philadelphia’s University City academic and research center where cell and gene (CGT) therapies were first discovered, and just two miles from Thomas Jefferson University’s East Falls Campus.

“JIB programming and Budd Bioworks’ continuum of space from incubation to large-scale bioproduction is a winning combination that will address the pressing need for available cGMP manufacturing space and bioprocessing talent we are experiencing locally and nationwide,” said Joseph Fetterman of Colliers Life Sciences, who is marketing the campus.

The campus holds a significant place in Philadelphia's manufacturing past, at its height employing 20,000 people mass producing pioneering stainless-steel applications that revolutionized transit from the automobile to outer space.

Excellent news. It's also just one mile from Wayne Junction and one mile from Temple's hospital campus. It would be very good for the entire city if that top part of Nicetown can be revived.

Saw an interesting permit posted today. Complete demolition of all structures at 1135-43 S Broad St which is the Broad St Diner Lot. Not sure what could be built there since the BSL stop is directly underneath.

Gov. Wolf Announces GLG Expanding Into Pennsylvania, Creating 250 Good-Paying Jobs in Philadelphia

Quote:
June 29, 2022
Governor Tom Wolf announced today that GLG, the world’s insight network, is locating its third major U.S. office and first Pennsylvania operation in Philadelphia’s historic district and plans to create 250 good-paying jobs within the next three years.

“The decision by GLG to locate its new operation here in Pennsylvania, rather than other states, speaks volumes about the advantages we provide to companies to help them grow and thrive,” said Gov. Wolf. “The company’s investment in Philadelphia will create hundreds of jobs and help boost the local economy. I welcome GLG and applaud them for recognizing all that Pennsylvania has to offer.”

GLG is leasing space at 111 South Independence Mall East in Philadelphia, known as the Bourse Building. The company will make leasehold improvements and purchase office equipment to allow for the expansion of its Philadelphia operations.

GLG is basically a big name consulting firm? Anyways love to see the Bourse building office space being used.

Other news:
After seven years, South Philadelphia's 338,000-SF Bok building is 98% leased

The Bok has an eclectic mix of 250 different tenants of which many are self-owned. The building's owner is now looking in the city for another project.

Wikipedia says GLG has 2,000 employees. So if they're opening a 250 person office here, it will be a significant portion of their headcount.

This could continue happening in a post-Covid world. As someone who works in NYC, I can assure you the #1 "remote"/"hybrid" location for employees of companies headquartered in NYC is Philadelphia. During Covid, 2 people in my office (out of about 100 HQ folks) moved to Philadelphia permanently. Now it's up to 5. Most interestingly, of the 5, 1 is a director, 2 are VPs, 1 is C level, and 1 is an IC. I don't think this is unique to my company.

We've joked in conference calls about getting a WeWork in Philly for the Philly based folks and it wasn't laughed off. We'll see.

good luck to them on their venture but, their description and the description of their anchor tenet are like terminal levels of nonprofit and biotech buzzwords, and they want poor locals to invest in the project. I really hope it's not going to scam a bunch of poor people
