I wouldn't really saw that curved facades are "gimmicky" - they're so ubiquitous that they are "typical" (i.e. how many towers around Brentwood have curved facades?)
I think the term "gimmicky" implies something that stands out more - like oddball splashes of coloured spandrel or protruding boxes.
I don't even think that peaked roofs are gimmicky anymore.
