Great thread. A varied and high-quality collection of shots of one of my favorite styles of housing. Something about row homes exudes community, even if they don't necessarily promote it.

Strangely enough, the single-story rowhouses look the most like a set of rowhouses that you would find in Wilmington. Single-story rowhouses are rare and unusual around here, though, which I think might be the case in Hamilton.

They are a sort of rare. There are a number of one and one-and-a-half storey cottages as you get toward the north end. Most of them aren't attached rows though, often duplexes.

great shots! lol behind every beautiful set of rowhouses is an ugly commie-style high rise. Some of the less classical hamilton row houses, ie. the ones with siding not brick remind me a lot of queens, new york.

Row houses are so beautiful. It's a shame that they're a rarity in this neck of the woods.

Rowhouses are great. There are some downsides to them, though. For someone like me, who loves sunlight and wants the house to be bright during the day (especially in Winter when sunlight is free energy), a house that is in the middle of the row can only have windows on 2 sides, and so the amount of sunlight that you can get is limited. I never lived in a rowhouse, but I have lived in duplexes (a set of 2 houses in a row), and even with 3 sides to get sunlight, you can be restricted a little bit.

Generally, though, I think that rowhouses are pretty nice and work very well in cities. Plus, they remind me of the Mid-Atlantic area, so a city with a lot of rowhouses feels more welcoming to me.

I think you mean "semi-detached."

#1 & #3 above are in Dundas. Those are the only ones pictured here that are outside of central Hamilton, good eye. Dundas has a few nice rowhouses that predate the ones in Hamilton.

#2 is on John St. north of Barton

#4 is on Ferrie St. in the North End.

Yes, I do mean semi-detached. I thought about using that word, but it seems most people know them as duplexes outside of Toronto and Hamilton.

until you have to live in one next to loud neighbors (sometimes on both sides) tight parking good things are usually close to shopping and work and more of a sense of community unless of course it is a horrible community then you feel trapped.
