It's weird that this mega project is flying mostly under the radar in our forum.

Burj Khalifa really made people stop caring about the world's tallest title, even skyscraper nerds. I don't think anybody would want this in their city.

People were excited and followed the construction of the Burj Khalifa. It was also in an area people were actually welcomed and could visit. Unfortunately, this thing is going up in Saudi Arabia. Tom Cruise won't base jumping off this building anytime soon for his next flick.

I'm sure it's because it's located halfway around the world and there is just no spp users from that part of the world...

Even Asia/China is somewhat under the radar.

Build a 3000 footer in North America and I'm sure there will be lots and lots of interest!

How difficult would it be to get into this country... I mean... it's just desert, right?

Anyway... When is this nice tower going to be done?

Maybe this tower has such little interest because over 1,000 feet of it is spire.

It's the location; It's just not urban. Skyscrapers are awesome as parts of the urban fabric - they're the result of natural market forces and population density. Of course there is a lot of competition and ego (see the Chrysler Building) but not to this level. There's just something so much less interesting about building something like this out in the desert. In a country most of us will never visit.

What can we do to correct this?

As far as location it could be worse. Only 1.3 billion people will ever have the opportunity to see the Royal Clock Tower in person. You can only get within 31 miles of Mecca if you are not a Muslim before you reach the "Muslim/Koran history test" checkpoints. Medina has a similar rule but I don't know what the distance is before the checkpoints.

There's a lot more detailed coverage in the "other" (SSC) forum.

Construction has been slow to the point of grinding to a halt on numerous occasions. For political, financial, technical(?) reasons, there seems to be a significant amount of doubt as to whether this will actually ever be completed.

All alone? Why is it being built in such isolation? They're going to need a huge parking ramp for sure!

Even viewing Dubai, it all looks so car-centric, despite all the towers, and certainly not a walking type city. When I see an overview of Dubai, it leaves me no desire to visit there!

Let's not exagerate too much how isolated this thing is. Yes, it's built on a huge empty lot on the fringe of the city but Jeddah is not a village with its population of about 3.5M people. And they intend to develop that lot to the max. There are already a few supertalls being built elsewhere in the city. Jeddah might just be the next Dubai.

According to the developers November 2017 update, the tower now stands at 25% core completion. Floor 63 and at 833 feet.

Saudi Arabia has one of the strictest visa policies in the world. This tower might not be haram like the Mecca tower for non-Muslims, but the country doesn't even offer tourist visas to see it in person. So it's pretty much up to local photographers and Hajj pilgrims to get pictures of this tower.
