Panorama photos - how to make the best

Panorama photograph from observation deck of Berlin TV Tower

How are such photos made best? You cannot make this photograph by a fisheye objective or a similiar device as you would then photograph the interior parts of the observation area. You have to composite it of multiple pictures. But how is this best done that the points where the pictures fit together remain invisible?

Microsoft Live photo tools has a not bad free option. Doesn't do as good a job on exposure compensating.

I use Hugin on linux. Don't know if there's a Windows version, but it works great. I don't use a tripod or anything, I just take a bunch of shots and load them into Hugin. It spits out a decent pano almost every time. It does a great job matching exposures too. There is a nice preview window where you can perform a lot of adjustments, but this is often unnecessary.

These are all hand held stitched images:

Try it out, it's free: http://hugin.sourceforge.net/download/

Here's some handheld panos that hugin made for me...

13472 x 900

10561 x 1354

5008 x 1306

9913 x 1221

Downloaded one, although I downloaded it a while ago so maybe it's improved.

On cloudy days I get vignetting on the edges of photos and when it stiches them you get these black blobs in the sky - i.e.:

I use autostitch - I also find that doing HDR on the photos (Photomatix) will help avoid the need to manually blend.

My collection of tools - all free (except the camera)
Panasonic DMZ TZ4 - Picasa - Autostitch - Photomatix HDR

I always take too few shots - more is better.
