every single one of your disparaging posts (i.e., all of your grand total of 17 posts on SSP) reeks of desperate boosterism. People that feel secure about themselves, and their cities/countries do not need to resort to ad hominem attacks and trolling to make a point.

Well this nice thread took a bad turn.

I think Toronto's cool and has definitely come a long way and even though it was far from where I grew up (Honolulu) -- there were a lot of music/bands/artists that were popular in Hawaii from there and pretty much unknown to most other parts of the US like Messenjah, Maestro Fresh-Wes to Snow (well before he became popular in the US with Informer, we had already been bumping Lonely Monday Morning). (Latin) Freestyle music was also very popular in Hawaii in the 80s, 90s & early 2000s with the majority coming from places like NY, Florida, California, some from Chicago & Philly but also from parts of Canada of which we knew about too like Elissa, VLA, Joee, etc. Prior to that I didn't know much about Toronto but for some reason it's music made the long journey all the way out to Honolulu back in the day & we dug it.

Seriously, everyone just ignore that guy. It's interesting to look back on Toronto and how vibrant it was and the opportunities I missed to connect with people and the rest of the city. Even thought I live in Mississauga, I went to Toronto for only the first time in over a year today to help my brother move his things into his new apartment downtown. With summer starting and the COVID subsided (for now), I will make sure to take the opportunity to reconnect with people and capture the energy and vibrancy that is returning the city. It was a good feeling to see Toronto again after so long and I hope I experience it on a deeper level and share that here with you guys too. I hope to see you guys in other great cities, big and small, NYC, Chicago, SF, Honolulu, etc. do the same. Let's get out there and experience the city and share photos while we still care. I'm really looking forward to seeing new threads from all of you.

What is with your anti-Canada diatribes? Were you goosed by a gaggle of geese in Gander on vacation as a child, or something?

I'm from Houston and the best thing my dad ever did was accept an assignment to Toronto 50 years ago this month. We lived there for two years. Put up with a hell of a lot of anti-American crap because of Vietnam and Watergate, but still loved it. As for Canadians being "uptight and square by a factor of 10x," I was able to see "The Godfather" and "Lady Sings the Blues" without any adults at a movie theater, even though I was only 14 years old, because movies that were rated "R" in the States were rated "M" in Canada. I was also there when CITY Channel 79 began broadcasting the soft core porn "Baby Blue Movie" every Friday at midnight.

I just want to remind people here that this is not a country versus country thread and to keep discussions in a polite tone. Both the USA and Canada are amazing countries. On this trip I visited both Toronto and Chicago and both cities are among the most exciting places I have been to. Well, there is not something bad that doesn't come with something good: this thread is alive again after 5 years!

Speaking of Toronto's counterculture scene, I read that Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders moved up North to be part of that Yorkville and Toronto's music scene for awhile before the Pretenders took off.
