I give you The Strathcona Hotel on York Street. It's covered in beige and brown aluminium siding. Does anybody know if there is a brick or limestone building hiding under all that crap?

The (two?) bottom levels aren't too bad at all.

Wow....what a putrid person. The saga of the Residences will live on...

(Oh, the Strathcone looks fine as well...it's in such a dense part of downtown that it just blends in. Even architecturally, it's so mundane that it's ugly qualities are minimal.)

The name of the hotel on the side wall, that looks like it comes from a gigantic stick-on kids' lettering set from Toys R Us, doesn't help either.

Ha, that's exactly what I thought too. A new sign could go a long way... I'm pretty sure it had the exact same-looking sign the one time I stayed there back in 1990.

I always wondered what was under that siding myself.

It just looks like a generic building to me. Sure, it looks cheap by the siding, but it's position doesn't allow for it to be very visible, minimizing it's ugliness potential.

God....that Calgary supermansion is deplorable.

It's pretty damn ugly. One block over we have Hotel Victoria, I can't help but wonder if there is a gem hiding under all that brown siding.

The siding was added when several floors were tacked on the building in the 80's. Obviously they couldn't match whatever material was used when the building was built in 1933 so they just covered the whole thing in a consistent, but boring and tacky siding.

Last time I saw the building discussed on UT, forumers who were around at the time didn't really have any praise for the original facade. Was probably poorly maintained brick or stone that would've had to be replaced eventually anyway.

What’s back? The driving force of this thread for so many years? This new version has just been a sad President’s Choice, generic brand knockoff of the original. Just look at the number of pages and responses. This new version was created half a year ago and only has 15 pages. The old thread would generate twice that much a month.

I'm glad Molson is back. He provides more flavour to this forum than his user name....a beer that I ended up having 3 quarts of just before Christmas to see if it was really as bland as I recalled. That plus a quart of 50 and it was a total Canajun night out.

Translation In a decision rendered this morning, the Quebec Court of Appeal dismissed the application of the owner of the Residences Soleil, Eddy Savoie, who challenged a trial judge's decision and required him to pay $300 000 in moral and punitive damages to Pierrette Thériault-Martel, the daughter of a former resident whom he had wrongfully pursued.

Pierrette's mom is begging for release, beseeching Gilles.

Eddy Savoie should run for Premier of Quebec. Then Prime Minister of Canada. He is following the current political formula for success of being a shady real estate developer / businessman who grifts his way to the top while failing spectacularly to deliver a quality product.

It's not much more than a guess, but for some reason I'm thinking that it was buff or gold-coloured brick with a stone facade that it lost when the building was expanded. For many years it was mostly covered in aluminum siding, was it not?

The Strathona Hotel is hideous, chop it in half vertically and you'd expect to find it in Thunder Bay, not a block away from the Royal York.

The Strathcona hotel actually doesn't really bother me. It's rather forgettable.

If you want ugly check out the Marriott in downtown Calgary:

Or the Carriage House Inn:
