More CPL transfer news as the CPL is starting to have some of their prospects sign abroad.

Victor Loturi (21) of Calgary's Cavalry FC has signed with Ross County of the Scottish Premier League (joining fellow Canadians Harry and Ben Paton)

BC Place is a renovated architectural statement surrounded by futuristic towers. That's not Commonwealth. It's as utilitarian as BMO Field with a boring setting. It's just bigger and this is a mens world cup.
Having been to Grey Cups at both BMO (2016) and Commonwealth (2018) I can say that Commonwealth is on a completely different (i.e. higher) level than BMO. It’s more than just “bigger”, and doesn’t feel like it was built on the cheap like BMO.
Agreed that BC Place will be the showpiece.

Is it just because of a lack of exposure that BMO feels perfectly fine to me and not "cheap"? I've only been to BMO (in all it's various phases), THF, TD place once, and Ivor Wynne once. Plus a couple Canadian universities.

Cheap or not, BMO gives fans a great view of the action.

So does McMahon in Calgary but I wouldn't want it being a representative for Canada either.

BMO Field reminds me of a certain number of late-model medium-sized soccer stadiums in Europe. Though not any that I'd describe as "iconic".

Commonwealth Stadium has a bit of classical grandeur about it.

I'd say the only other stadium that has that in Canada is the Big O.

BC Place is beautiful but classical grandeur is not its style.

BMO is a bolted together frankenstadium in the vein of old school joints that started out small but grew, like old Winnipeg Stadium and Taylor Field in Regina. Commonwealth has the elegance of being a unitary design. It was expanded once in 1982, but in a way that is absolutely seamless with the original structure.

Commonwealth is much bigger and more impressive than BMO. It's easily the most 'big time' feeling outdoor stadium in Canada. It's the only outdoor stadium on the same level as the big three domed stadiums.

The stadium isn't the only thing to represent Canada, it's also the city.
The World Cup is always a big deal in Toronto and Southwestern Ontario.

Meh. I disagree. I agree BMO is a disaster of a field. Commonwealth isn't much better- yes, it's big, but it lacks presence other than sheer size. If we're going on presence alone, then my picks are Winnipeg and Regina. When Winnipeg hosted the Women's World Cup, IGF by far, looked like the nicest of all the stadiums. And it creates the illusion of being much bigger than it is. It's one of the things this city got right.

^ Commonwealth doesn't just give the impression of being big. It IS big. I've been in there for a few sold out football games and it is a pretty impressive sight. You just see a wall of people across the field.

It's funny how people on social media and traditional media worry about the impression the outside world will have of Canada if we have World Cup matches take place in a city like Edmonton. I'm sure people in Durban or Cape Town, South Africa were wringing their hands over places like Rustenburg, Polokwane, Bloemfentein hosting matches back in 2010 thinking out loud, "Whatever will they think of us!"

This came totally out of the blue. After rumours of Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest, Cyle Larin joins Tajon Buchanan at Club Brugge, IMO a very good move.

I can confirm that horns closely resembling vuvuzelas were a pretty constant thing at CFL games in the 80s and 90s.

If you watch old videos of games from then you'll certainly hear them.

More good signing news.

First the bad news, Steven Vitoria's Portuguese side Moreirense was recently relegated from the Primeira Liga by G.D. Chaves and Vitoria was released.

Today Steven Vitoria joined G.D. Chaves

Ottawa was a hotspot for them, you'd always hear them blaring in the stands, but they were impossible for me to find locally... in the early 90s I ordered some from the Ottawa Rough Riders gift shop and I proceeded to annoy my seatmates at Winnipeg Stadium for years to come

Interestingly they are way more available today, hell, Dollarama sells 'em. But I never see them in any local sports venues anymore. Actually, I wonder if they are even allowed?

One sidenote though, no one in Canada called them vuvuzelas until the 2010 World Cup. Until then they were just "horns"!
