I don't know of any CVS's within a block of Fry's. Even a quick Google search shows that most of CVS's in Phoenix are nearly a mile or more away from the nearest Fry's. The closest I can find together is CVS on 24th St/Thomas which is .8 miles to the Fry's on 30th St just North of Thomas. I didn't check Walgreen's proximity to Fry's, but I'm sure there are similar results.

I can think of several literally off the top of my head:

https://goo.gl/maps/4nTwaSJGQLsRBHtn8

CVS across from a Walmart Super Center

There are Wallgreens/CVS close to grocers literally all over the place I dont know what you are talking about.

Rural and Southern has a Fry's, Walmart, and CVS on competing corners and they all Co exist and are packed.

This metric should be adjusted to reflect the density of the immediate neighborhood. Fry's and CVS are no doubt hoping that in downtown Phoenix there will be enough office workers in the daytime and residents on evenings and weekends to support stores in closer proximity than would be typical at a suburban intersection. I hope they're right.

I specifically said Fry's and CVS in proximity and you pointed out Basha's, Safeway and Albertsons. I guess these are similar situations although none of those grocers are anywhere near the level of Fry's in consumer sales (Kroger is nearly double the revenue of Albertson's). Loco pointed out a CVS/Fry's in 1 location, but that is only 1 (I'm sure there are a few more exceptions) in a populated suburban area where you can pretty much park anywhere in an endless sea of blacktop on whichever side of the road you happen to be driving on. Most of the growing Downtown residential is going to be closer to Fry's. Even though it's only a block 1/2 further than Fry's, anyone walking with groceries is going to probably pick the shorter walk, not to mention, the easier place to get into and the atmosphere you get while shopping.

I've been to the CityScape CVS quite a few times and hated the experience every single time I've been there. They treat everyone that walks in as a potential shoplifter, there are no public restrooms, the only entrance faces inwards towards CityScape's courtyard and the customer service is really awful. I went to the new Fry's last night and I gotta say, the entire experience was well worth driving to Downtown just to even check it out. Easy to park, easy to get my groceries to the car and easy to exit. For those that will be walking, the sidewalk entrance is extremely accessible. Also, there was great service, overall cheaper prices and no problem finding the stuff I needed. Plus, the place is just gorgeous inside. They went all out for the aesthetics and very urban feel. I'll stick with my prediction that CityScape CVS doesn't last that long or they will need to do something big to keep their customers.

Doesn't CVS have an entrance on 1st Ave. and Jefferson? Not that I disagee with your point of the store not being a pleasant shopping experience. I was in Fry's this morning, and will be doing most of my shopping there over the two Safeways that are closer to my midtown location. I like that they have designated rideshare spaces on 1st Street right outside the entrance.

They do, but it's been closed off for a long time now. Probably to stave off "unpaying customer" issues I'm sure. It also wasn't the best streetside entrance either. That whole side of Cityscape facing 1st Ave wasn't really designed very well IMO. I think there is a way to get to the underground garage somewhere in the store IIRC, but I've never used it.

We made our first visit to the Fry's this afternoon. I was fairly impressed. I do my weekly shopping at the 20th St/Highland location and go to either the Sprouts or the Safeway at 7th Ave/Osborn for incidentals. The logistics of using the new Fry's are such that I'll stick with Sprouts/Safeway for small needs, but the store seemed to compare nicely with the other Fry's. I was disappointed that the Chompie's didn't have a fuller bakery operation -- I drive to PV Mall to get a stash of bagels every month or two. I will give it the real test on Saturday and attempt a week's worth of shopping. The garage and elevators work well. The liquor department was not as robust as the Highland store. The produce department looked great, although they were out of green beans. So far I'm liking the place.

The 1st Ave/Jefferson entrance of CVS is still open, or at least it was when I walked through it on Wednesday

I think Frys will stay insanely busy so that if you need something real quick, CVS will make more sense. It will effect their business for sure but I don’t think they will close because of it. I think they can coexist but I think CVS should extend their hours past Frys 11 o’clock closing time although I’m sure that would require having security which I think they have anyway. I was in Chicago last summer and their Walgreens had video screens on their fridges with what’s inside, really cool and futuristic. Our CVS could use some upgrades like that.

Not sure about that. The grand opening was packed and I was able to navigate the aisles easily and checked out in the self check-out lanes in less than a minute or 2. It was much quicker than I thought it was going to be. I was anticipating waiting in line for 10 minutes. pleasantly surprised how fast I was able to shop (not counting the time looking around and taking pics, lol).

Edit: Article on when the Ryan and remaining offices and retail portions will open for Block 23. I know there was some concern that WeWork may not happen, but apparently they are still set to lease office space.

Oh, I mentioned I took pics. Here they are. Not the best, but it gives anyone who hasn't been yet a look.

Here is info on the artist for those interested. Unfortunately don't see on the website where one could buy prints, but I have to agree that it's an awesome piece.

That screen is Huge!! On the right hand side, you can see they've installed the chandelier in the circles cut out of the floorplates.

I visited the downtown Fry's for the first time today. I'm glad to have a downtown grocery for occasional needs, even though I do most of my regular shopping at Trader Joe's and Sprouts. A few curmudgeonly observations:

-- The self-checkout terminals don't accept Apple Pay (and its Android equivalents). I was astonished since the equipment is all new. Doing a little reading, I've discovered that parent company Kroger is a stubborn holdout when it comes to contactltess payments. Apparently, they have their own system based on QR codes. That strategy hasn't worked out for most other merchants. Target and CVS recently gave in and have started allowing Apple Pay instead of insisting on their own clumsy systems.

-- The layout is a little weird. After using the self-checkout, I thought I'd then be able to exit the store immediately. Instead, I found myself back in the main area of the market and had to retrace my steps to the main entrance.

-- A Phoenix police officer was providing security at the store entrance. I hope they haven't had a lot of shoplifting and vagrancy problems already.

-- On newly reopened First Street, the entire curb on the east side from Jefferson to Washington is assigned to rideshare pickup/dropoff and curbside grocery pickup. It's a shame those functions weren't somehow integrated into the garage. Had they been, there would be enough room for bike lanes on that block of First Street.

-- I heard complaints that the store opened without bike racks, but they've since been added. There were plenty in the honeycomb style used by Downtown Phoenix Inc, near the store entrance.

The officer is off duty, lots of companies employ off duty officers in uniform and people think it's a PPD staffing situation.

Yes, I realize he was off-duty and therefore paid by Fry's for his time. I just wonder what, if anything, his presence says about the security needs of the store.
