Edmonton at it's worst.

Saturday night late, and Sunday afternoon. In February. On the greyest day of the year. This is Edmonton at it's worst..

Enbridge tower, with the Full moon poking out.

Another picture on Jasper, looking South.

THe next three are just pics I took of the plans for Stationlands that are in the office in Manulife Place...

OK. I've parked my car on the street, and I'm beginning on a tour....

Here's our city hall.

Public art in front of city hall.

The CN Tower in Edmonton is one of my favourite buildings. Others differ on seeing it's attrativeness...

Here's a panorama out front of City Hall. Looking south

The Carillon tower in front of city hall. I like clocks, and I like carillons. They were actually ringing the bells for three o'clock when I was taking this picture.

More context for the carillon.

Concrete doesn't fare well here in Edmonton. This is the Art Gallery...

I'm relatively new to Edmonton, so I don't know what all the buildings are yet, but this one is quite imposing....

Looking south down 97th Street.

The back of the theatre. as opposed to a movie place.

This looks like the gate to Chinatown, but Chinatown is north of here.

I didn't wander around Jasper East, but this gives an idea of what it's like. This is taken from in front of the big pink Government of Canada building, looking East.

This picture of the Hardware Grill is taken exactly one block south of the last picture. That's the river valley you see on the other side of the street. The Hardware Grill is one of Edmonton's better restaraunts.

An Inukshuk overlooks the valley, next to the Infamous Hall D.

The view from next to the inukshuk.

The art in front of Hall D....

Looking east down Jasper in front of the much reviled Hall D. I honestly don't hate it.

The actual Hall, with it's view reflected in the glazing.

Another shot, from the far side from the last one.

One more.

Yeah. That's a hell of a view.

Walking back up from the last vantage point. The pink palace in front, Hall D's ugliest wall is to the right.

heheh. I guess the premier has a spot at the Shaw conference centre.

Looking West down Jasper.

The ugliest Hummer of all time. The mind boggles.

One of several prime pieces of real estate being used as a parking lot. Across from the Fairmont...

This just struck me as a weird structure . Part of the entrance to the Fairmont.

OK. Let's count how many things have been done wrong here. This is probably one of the prettiest old buildings in Edmonton. So.... let's put an ugly utility box on the street in front of it. And a garbage can. And a post office box. And an ugly light fixture. And then string temporary telephone wire across in front of it. The signage is just icing.

These two buildings are just gems.

Glad this one survived. It's a great anchor for Rice Howard Way.

This is a very cool clock, that is being terribly mistreated.

And neglected. I do like the patina of the metal, but to work, it really needs to be kept clean and looking good, so you know that the rust is intentional.

In the foreground is the Sherlock Holmes Pub, and the big building is the Philips McKinnon building, where our lawyer is.

The parkade on RHW that I've heard complained about. ScotiaBank building in gold...

Continuing from Part 1:

Here we're looking west on Rice Howard Way. I love the way that the central building is reflecting the gold building.

A small tree on top of big rocks. Very strange.

Now that's a nice big tower. And nice old buildings in the foreground too!

A nice boutique hotel, right downtown.

The Hop's Handbag building. Recipient of 'lamest use of an amazing retail location' award.

'cause a little bird poo might make the awning ugly.

I like how they didn't bother to finish the east side of the Epcor building. I guess they figured the hotel would get torn down....

The old Bank of Montreal building, on the far side of New City..

New City.

Again with the old BOM building. the marble is quite nice. The green brick, not so much.

No. seriously. Enough green brick.

When they tear it down, those light fixtures have to be saved.

That's what a bank should look like.

It's cold. Time for a coffee. There's a Starbucks. Yay!

OK. Back to boggling over the green brick.

Alberta College?

I just like this hill.

A piece of modern art called "To be an office tower"

The Starlite Room. Another bar in a very cool building. This was the first bar in Edmonton that I went to.

It needs some TLC. Brick is crumbling in the top right corner.

Public art around a park.

The renovations on the Bay building continue. Lovely zinc.

Really. Quite lovely that zinc....

Looking south.

The Paramount theatre. Another underutilized downtown building.

Western Canada's only big bank...

For sale hunh?

Think someone might buy the neighbouring building and put up something big?

Sobey's being built on the Corner, and the two Icons will fill in all the way to the existing residential tower there.

I love the Birks building.

silly lawyers...

Looking East by North East on Jasper Ave from 104th St.

Sobey's hoarding, with Birks building at the corner.

Another shot of Birks building.

Sobey's construction.

Icon I construction

Another shot of Sobey's

Icon's crane in blue....

Another shot of the crane.

Armstrong Block...

More of 104th Street.

Icon is above ground....

I really hate that they allow wrong dates to be put on buildings. The Century should not have the old date on it. The Plumbing And Heating Supplies building is old though...

This would be killer if it was cleaned up. Jenny Craig never does good things with their buildings....

I have yet to go into the Boardwalk Market...

Another prime parking lot....

This needs to be filled in....

MacEwen colleges distinctive towers in the background

The new location of the Sidetrack Cafe.

In a parkade....

Looking south along 104th Street, you realize those empty parking lots won't remain empty with three major residential towers that close..

104th and 104th. This building is prime for conversion to lofts....

If you hate Peregrine Point, you have to save your real venom for this commie block of student housing. Call it "To be a ghetto".

CN Tower without any context.

Again with the low rise, no design abomination.

CN Tower with some context.

Which is worse? Staples or the Casino? Tough call.

Do you think Edmonton has enough parking?

Greyhound, and the Grand Hotel. Beneath the vinyl siding of the Grand is a boutique hotel screaming to get out.

Edmonton realy is a city...

Looking south.

And looking north... from the exact same spot...

Another shot to the south from 104th Ave.

With a matching shot towards the north.

Almost back. Here's another CN shot.

Can't remember the name of this one.

Another cell phone panorama. CN to city hall. This is where they're talking about the new arena.

Sorry. Anyone who hates this building has no taste.

One more.

At least the Colliers sign isn't completely faded...

See, this could be decent with a bit of maintenance.

You just know that building is full of lawyers and accountants.

OK, I'm going home now. It's freaking cold out.

And here's a couple extras from other trips:

I don't get the title...isn't that how Edmonton usually looks, minus the snow in the summer time obviously?

You might have missed the lack of people on the street, or vehicles on the road. Of course, these photos taken on a cold snowy sunday morning would explain the lack there of

Good commentary.

I visited Edmonton a few years back. It was August but there were already morning frosts. Still, the city was very nice in that Canadian way. Downtown, however, felt a bit like Little Dallas. There's a mall downtown, but no retail otherwise. The urban fabric was so frayed that apart from the tall gleaming skyscrapers, downtown seemed comatose.

At any rate, a city so far north is fascinating. It's the extremes that define any place. It makes Edmonton seem very different, yet very civilized because of that. Maybe the tar sands will make Edmonton very rich, and maybe global warming will compensate for its winters.

Canadian cities in the winter can get quite boring unless there is a festival downtown.

I have been to Edmonton exactly once and one thing I remember is how friendly people were.

City-wise though, it's a real mish-mash. It feels much smaller than it is, even in these photographs (e.g. Hamilton looks a good deal larger).

FREEZING. That is almost all that I remember about my 2 years in Edmonton. Granted, that was during the early 1970's, and I was but a small child.

People have been complaining about how cold this winter has been down here in Oklahoma but that's NOTHING compared to what you guys deal with all winter. Nice pics, I have seen pics of Edmonton in the spring and summer but never in the frigid winter.

Some of you guys are crazy. I love this cold & snowy time of year. Stumbling out of 1905 last night with a couple inches of fresh powder and a nice chill in the air was beautiful. As far as I'm concerned Jasper ave at two in the moring with a fresh cover of snow is as perfect as it gets.
