Pittsburgh's Oakland Section (Major Thread)

Oakland is located about 2 miles (if that) east of Downtown Pittsburgh. It is dominated by the very urban campus of The University of Pittsburgh, (Pitt).

Wonderful tour. Universities are great economic engines and always a boon for the cities they're in. Still, they're like modern hospitals in the sheer crappiness of their architecture. Looking at those pictures, I just want to blow up the modern buildings.

In the neighborhoods the cars really stand out. It's understandable but you'd wish there was a way to lose them.

As always, Pittsburgh reveals itself as a treasure.

I'm planning on visiting Pittsburgh this summer, and I'll be sure to go to Oakland. Nice shots.

Was this the original design of these houses or were they altered? I actually like them.

Nice pics!

^^You can go see for yourself, I think I remember those buildings being located at the corner of Bates and Boulevard of the Allies.

Its entirely possible to take the elevator to the top floor. There are some executive offices, but nobody bothered my friends and I when we went to the top to peer from the windows. There are also ledges on some of the intermediate floors that some have climbed through the window and sat on.

I've been waiting for someone to photo Juliet, the street I used to live on in the true South Oakland, which is technically that which is horribly sectioned off by the boulevard of the allies.

My house would've been directly to the right (edit: left i mean) of this photo but its so incredibly derelict, that I don't blame you not bothering with a picture.

No, other than what looks like a few window alterations, those are as built.

OK, OK, if Oakland were its own city, it would be in my top ten for smaller cities. Thanks hero.
