The church towers of the western end belonged until 1529 to Saint Gertrud church and the church towers on the eastern end to Saint Marien church.
In 1529, it was decided to demolish the naves of both churches and to build instead a new church nave between the remaining towers. Saint Gertrud church and Saint Marien church were demolished in 1529/1530, than the construction of the actual church started, which was completed in 1554.
