Half-timbered madness: Celle, Lower Saxony

Half-timbered madness: Celle, Lower Saxony

Celle is a little city with about 72.000 inhabitants located just 40Km north of the city of Hannover (pop: 520.000).
The town is known for its many half-timber houses that date back to the 16th century in the city centre, 480 of them restored.
Also the castle, built in 1530 is very beautiful.

I really like Celle, it seems a nice little city to live and a big city (Hannover) can be reached through various public transport trains that need about 25 minutes and depart every 20 minutes.

And while I really like half-timbered houses I kinda missed cute little narrow alleys that the cities of Goslar and especially Quedlinburg have so many of.

Great pictures, I've never seen this city before.

Is the the building in the upper right corner of picture 35 relatively new?

Yes, it's a department store, I guess it was built in the seventies or eighties.

Great photos. Towns like this exist all over Germany. In fact, every 30minutes or an hour in any direction you'll come across another one.

Great streetlife.

Celle is indeed beautiful and the castle both unusual and interesting. But, I'm with you--Goslar, with its winding steets and alleys is much cozier. Thanks for the photo series. Great shots.

The town appears to be lovingly restored... Not difficult to imagine considering the beauty of the built environment. Thanks for introducing me to another lovely German city!
