Maybe some day when BMO needs something new they can continue the effect. Would need to be well over 30 stories to do this.

New photos. The glass sections of the building look really good; I wish they'd just done more glass for the lower floors instead of adding stone on the lower floors. The design of the stone portion isn't quite right, even though it looks like they used good materials (not sure if the upper material is sandstone, but I think the bottom is granite). Maybe it'll look better when everything's wrapped up. The old facades certainly still need a little restoration work.

I think the bottom is granite and the top is concrete, If that is the case, then it was a really poor choice to go with concrete.

I walked past at the weekend. It's solid stone, but it's just thin stone tiles attached to concrete; not solid, weighty, load-bearing blocks

I like what they are doing with the new stone facades. They didn't make it look like fake heritage facades. The new street-wall sections blend in with the real heritage facades but are practical and built of decent materials.

I agree. This is turning into a nice project. It'll be good to see it finished.

Disappointingly, I am hearing that O'Carrrol's will not be returning to this space.

Oh, is it general retail on the ground floor? I assumed it'd just be a big RBC bank.

I had hoped they would be too.

O'Carroll's will surely be missed. This should be going back into this space!

It'll be interesting to see what sort of effect these new retail spaces have. It's possible that they'll be hard to find tenants for because of a surplus of retail space, but it's also possible that the new buildings will open up new opportunities for businesses that couldn't find a suitable space previously. There aren't that many large, modern storefront spaces downtown.

I'm surprised. I was talking to staff at the Hart and Thistle, where a lot of the O'Carroll's staff had migrated to, a couple of weeks ago and they were talking like it was still going to happen. http://www.ocarrolls.com/

Where did you hear that they will not be returning?

As I suspected, the cladding on top is concrete. Big mistake!

This will discolour and leach in a year or two and be a constant maintenance issue not to mention eyesore. The lower section is 2" granite.

I wish that I could see it up-close. sdm thought that it was sandstone.

In any case, not all concrete is equal. Some types are better than others; for example, low-alkali concrete will effloresce and leach less than cheaper grades. Here is a link that might be of interest to some - http://www.nebrconcagg.com/assets/Pr...esign/ASR1.PDF

The RBC Main Branch will be taking up all of the ground floor.

Perhaps O'Carrolls will return in a different spot?

I looked at it on my lunch hour and asked the guy putting it up.......concrete. Even if it doesn't leach it looks cheap.
