If Sydney can't secure Novoporte Saint John should take a stab at it. Rail connection is stronger, plus Saint John has been justifiably slavering for a way to expropriate eroding properties near Canaport without spending city money on them.

Whereabouts in Membertou? Main reserve, or across Hwy 125 where they're planning their commercial area?

It is next to the strip mall that contains Tim Hortons on the main reserve.
It was reported that it is about 70% leased.

Thanks. I'm glad to be back. I just wish I was in the area to see these developments in person and keep track of them. Relying on the news means there's a lot of information lacking. I did notice Trifos has several concepts for 5-8 storey buildings along the waterfront that aren't covered in this thread, including a new residence or two for NSCC, judging by the location in the rendering and the proposed layout of the NSCC development.

Anytime you get a chance, please keep posting updates on the progress of these.

Whitney Pier overpass open to traffic

It's finally open! This will make life much easier than it has been in the last 8 weeks or so for Whitney Pier residents.

CBRM's pandemic costs up, but revenues not down as much as feared

The story doesn't provide numbers, but it mentions that building permit numbers are up, permit values are up even more, and MLS sales (with a link to a related story) are brisk, which has increased municipal revenue more than expected and has somewhat offset the increased cost from the pandemic.

Several updates coming

I may do these in a few different posts, but they will be in no specific order other than the order of the tabs I have open in my browser right now.

Lots to get to, as this article eludes to. (Note: there won't be any updates from the Cape Breton Post at the moment, as I haven't renewed my subscription yet)

Cape Breton to have an 'influx in construction' in the coming years

Provincial infrastructure projects such as the relocation of NSCC's Marconi campus are expected to bring a high volume of constructions jobs to Cape Breton this year. (Erin Pottie/CBC)

The article mentions the NSCC project, hospital and health center redevelopments, projects in Membertou and Eskasoni, and apartment buildings in Sydney.

It also mentions that the volume of current and expected work is causing some rotational workers to decide to stay and work in the Sydney area instead.

A rundown of major projects

goCapeBreton.com did an article on the amount of construction planned and occurring in the area. They call it "The Big Build", and are doing a series individual articles on some of the developments mentioned.

The Big Build — Billion-Dollar Construction in the CBRM

NSCC Marconi Downtown Campus Rendering

NSCC Downtown, CBRH Expansion, Glace Bay Hospital Renovation, New Waterford Community Hub, Northside Health Center, Sydney Fire Station are listed in the article, as well as a seventh section for "other projects" to be expanded upon in later articles. This would presumable be things like Horizon Acheivment Center; the library development with the associated hotel, apartment, parking garage, and office building project on the waterfront; the Jasper's development (apartments on George/Dorchester); and the train station development, as well as others I'm probably missing.

Sydney suddenly desirable

Sydney, N.S. ranked as desirable place to live

Video article on the CBC website about the real estate market and a survey done by Leger on the Most Livable Places in Canada for 2021. Sydney ranked number 8...for once.

Here's a link to the full list, which is surprisingly hard to find a direct link to.

Eskasoni stripmall

Eskasoni says $1.5M project will create more jobs for young people

The new section of the mall should open early next year. (Matthew Moore/CBC)

The stripmall expansion will accomodate three new businesses. The article also mentions a new long-term care facility in the community, as well as plans for the community to create their own high-speed internet and TV service.

Waterfront Helipad

New CBRM waterfront helipad touted as hope for future of tourism

A chopper from Breton Air comes in for a landing on the Sydney waterfront for the grand opening of Cape Breton Regional Municipality's new helipad. (Tom Ayers/CBC)

The Helipad is located adjacent to the second cruise ship berth, and is currently being used by Breton Air Services, which is a heli-tour charter that recently started in the area, around the same time as the Celtic Air Services private charter plane service.

Membertou Commercial Building

Old update, this is the same building that CJSA posted a photo update of earlier.

Membertou commercial building going up just as N.S. shut down due to COVID-19

A contractor started construction on a 55,000-square-foot, three-storey commercial building in Membertou just as public health restrictions due to COVID-19 shut down much of Nova Scotia. (Submitted by Membertou First Nation)

55,000 sqft, three storey commercial building, 75% leased at the time of the article.

The story also mentions an expansion of the Hampton Inn nearing completion at the time of print, and that their other commercial locations (4 in total) are completely leased with demand for more. There is also the big-box development planned alongside Hwy 125 at the new Membertou Interchange completed with the twinning project, which is currently moving slowly.

Horizon Achievement Center

Part of "The Big Build" Series

Horizon Achievement Scales Up With New Centre [The BIG BUILD]

$6.7 million, 20,600sqft building. For those that don't know, I'll quote the article to tell you what the Horizon Achievement Centre is about:

"Horizon Achievement Centre is Cape Breton's largest provider of vocational training and employment development services for adults living with intellectual disabilities. The new building will house Horizon's many social enterprises such as printing, catering, and employment services, as well as providing more space for training, meetings, and recreational activities."

The article has links to donate and to the centre's Facebook Page.
