If Santa Fe counts (it's in Albuquerque's TV market), then that would be a big one for me.

Galveston is technically in Houston's market but somewhat far from Houston. I could be immersed in Galveston's mini-universe while also enjoying Houston's amenities from time to time.

I live in one now: Wilmington. Our county has a population of around 575,000. That may be just a little too big.

Some of the smaller metro areas that I have liked in my visits have been:

Flagstaff, AZ
Santa Fe, NM
Williamsport, PA
New London, CT
Lancaster, PA

Going off of Wikipedia's list of MSAs under 500k (in order of largest to smallest):

CA - Santa Rosa-Petaluma MSA - city Healdsburg
CA - Santa Maria-Santa Barbara MSA - city Santa Barbara
CA - Salinas MSA - city Carmel
CA - San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles MSA - city SLO or Pismo Beach
CA - Santa Cruz-Watsonville MSA - city Santa Cruz or Capitola
HI - Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina MSA - city Lahaina
CA - Napa MSA - city St. Helena

As you can see, I'm a California coast (+ Hawaii) kinda guy.

Bingo!

Santa Barbara is definitely my first choice. The main reason it’s close to LA, and there is good train service to get there. SB is such a beautiful city, with nice beaches right downtown and the scenery that will take your breath away.

2nd is Monterey/Carmel, feels much bigger than it really is. One of the most beautiful scenery on the central coast, good food too.

San Luis Obispo is cool too, nice downtown for its size, but I think I would get bored fast. Now if it was closer to LA, although train service is not bad just a bit longer to LA.

I would also add Ojai, beautiful community and very chill. Nice and walkable town with plenty of nice restaurants to dine at. It’s also close to LA, but somewhat isolated and you have to drive in heavy traffic to get to the city.

Fayetteville and Colorado Springs are both in MSA’s over 500k. Great places though, especially Fayetteville/Bentonville in the Ozarks.

Lahaina is nice but really touristy. More of a town really anyway, and I’m not sure what employment is really available out there unless you work at one of the hotels.

If driving proximity to larger metros were to be the main criteria? In Canada It would have to be in Ontario, Quebec, or the West coast.

So, Kingston or London for Ontario. (close to 3 major metros).
Quebec - Sherbrooke (Montreal,QC and Boston).
West coast - WhiteRock (Van, and Seattle).

White Rock is actually fully a suburb of Vancouver and part of the metro.

I think you may be thinking of Abbotsford which is considered a separate metro from Vancouver, though even so a lot of people consider it to be part of Greater Vancouver.

That said, there are a number of cities maybe 1-2 hours east of Vancouver that would probably fit the bill.

If I lived full-time in a small city it would probably have to be in Europe, because of the much better connectivity and historical urban centers. There are places like Zug in Switzerland which has like 30,000 people, but is half an hour by train from Zurich or Lucerne so you’re not totally in the sticks. And there are more high-quality cities the size of a Madison, WI than you can list.

Oh okay..I thought that it was separate. This thread spurned me on to check some distances out, and having experienced pleasant day drives from Ottawa to both Philadelphia and NYC on two separate occasions,I can't believe that we haven't visited Boston Yet. If access to larger American markets is a criteria, then Windsor is also well situated. Cleveland is only a few hours, and Chicago is only a half day drive. Of course Detroit is right across..Winnipeg to Minnie is a full day (8 hours) which isn't too bad..Ditto for Regina to both of Alberta's cities. Just under an 8 hour drive. Thunder Bay is actually fairly close to Minnie as well which surprised me. I thought it was a few hours further. Canadian context folks..8 hours is fairly "close".

In the entire country of Canada, frankly, Victoria BC. Great weather, decent built environment, lots of restaurants, recreation and amenities and overall a very pleasant and scenic vibe to be in. Being on an island though really magnifies issues with its smaller size by not being able to drive out and pick something up, but it's generally pretty self sufficient.

Otherwise if I'm not within earshot of Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal or Calgary (honorable mention to Ottawa) I'm out of here. Small town Canada is absolute hell in the dead of winter.

In the US I could probably be happy being in a smaller metro on the West Coast, like Eugene, San Luis Obispo or Spokane, or maybe Boise if it qualifies. Taking the big assumption that any of these choices would provide employment.

Two cities that intrigue me are Asheville and Kelowna, BC. Been to Asheville (albeit a long time ago) and loved it; never been to Kelowna but it seems nice and growing.

Madison, Spokane, and Boise all have metros above 500k, so we can keep them off the list. Madison is over 660,000, Spokane is 580,000, and I just saw a report last week that projects Boise will top 800,000 next year.

That would be Boise's CSA. Spokane's was 679,495 at last estimate.

Victoria's a great answer. Even a reasonable day trip to Seattle (walk on/off a boat in each downtown) or Vancouver.
