I wonder if the current tenants will need to relocate during construction? Also, lets hope they get that crane up ASAP! Would love to see another crane downtown so soon!

According to ANS the crane for this development has been ordered. Hoardings are expected to go up soon and the developer plans to break ground this month.

One of the interesting aspects of the TD building is how visible it is from Barrington and the Grand Parade. The difference from the perspective shown below will be huge. The crane's also going to be quite tall -- it's probably been a while since something of this height has been built in the city.

Yeah, I was tempted to comment on that but I just repeated what they said.

I wonder if this one will be brought in from the US or something like the library crane?

6-8 weeks is usually how long it takes me to get something in the mail I've ordered.

Seeing a crane on Barrington Street is going to be unreal, considering how long people have talked about how it's such a slum.

I wouldn't be impressed, though, if the TD renovations finished before Barrington Espace.

Usually this project is viewed from the angle of downtown office space but I think just having the nice looking new building on Barrington will make a big difference to the street.

Of course the parking lot across the street will stand out even more. Hopefully it won't be too long before something is built there -- those old buildings should never have been torn down in the first place. The NFB Building is another big scar on Barrington that has not changed in about 20 years.

I went to go buy bus tickets today and NicNax (or however they miss-spelled it) the store in the old georgian was closed. I don't know when it closed, because I have not needed bus tickets or passes since beginning of June. But that is a good sign, yes?

According to a story in the allnovascotia.com (August 24th, 2012 edition) EllisDon Corp has been chosen as the general contractor for the TD expansion. According to the story, construction is expected to start within the next several weeks. (the exact date wasn't given). Now that a General Contractor has been chosen, hopefully a more definite start date will be released soon.

EllisDon will also be the general contractor for the Nova Centre.

$26-million TD Centre renovation to begin next week
September 7, 2012 - 7:14pm BY REMO ZACCAGNA BUSINESS REPORTER

Work on renovating and expanding the TD Centre in Halifax will begin Monday.

Quote:
Work on renovating and expanding the TD Centre in Halifax will begin Monday, but don’t expect to see construction crews just yet.

Workers will be placing concrete safety barriers down the middle of Granville Street from George Street north to the end of the Macara-Barnstead building and CIBC property line. The barriers will separate vehicular traffic on the east from construction material deliveries and related activity on the west.

“Once they’re in place, and that’s probably going to take a couple of days, so mid-week, the first phase is going to be the structural stabilizing and the partial removal of pieces on the Macara-Barnstead building,” Chris Andrea, vice-president of Compass Commercial Realty, the building’s property manager, said in a telephone interview Friday.

“You won’t see anything happening in the vacant lot beside or to the actual existing building. This is the very first part of everything.”

....

Andrea said a crane is anticipated to arrive in late September or early October.

“It’s been ordered, but it’s being built, so we don’t know exactly when that will arrive, but that’s the anticipated timeline for the crane.”

Halifax Regional Municipality approved the development application last October, and while the intention was to get started earlier, Andrea said they’re “not real far away from when we thought we’d be.”

“The plan was to start in late summer, so I think we’re on schedule, actually.

Has anybody seen the TD site? Has work started?

It will be particularly impressive to see this crane now that there are two other cranes at the Citadel site. The total with the library and Waterside will be 5. I'm not sure I've seen that many at once before, although there were a few up when the Paramount and Martello were both being built (Paramount had 2).

Well, we can update this one to "U/C"!

I hope in the not too distant future we'll also see a project that involves restoring the Dennis Building facade and building onto the empty lot surrounding it.
