I would guess 1985 or 86. Several buildings including Campanile, IBM and 999 Peachtree are all well under construction and finished in 1987.

Lots of fun to compare the 2 photos. I moved here in 1982 and saw the end of construction of the GA Pacific building and have enjoyed watching every highrise go up since that time. One of the best memories was watching a helicopter place the gold cupola on top of the old IBM tower.

My family relocated from upstate New York to Atlanta in 1974 and I've been here pretty much since then. I was a 7th grader then. In 1980 during my freshman year at GA Tech, I was living in Smith Dorm. I watched the BellSouth tower get built directly across the downtown connector from me. In my early years at Law Engineering I watched the IBM tower, with its slip form concrete core, getting built as I made my runs to Wolf Camera to develop the photos I took at project sites (yes kids, we used to have get photos developed!).

Yep... Midtown is no longer the skinny strip of highrises on the fringe of downtown any more.
But, I must say, Midtown definitely needs a couple of 600+ footers to give the skyline some real "pop" in the area between 5th and 11th streets.
Hopefully, the Cousins proposal and 1105 West Peachtree will start construction soon.

Amen! I'm newly relocated to ATL, specifically Midtown, but I've been keeping my eye on the area for some time and love how its filling in so nicely. But I must agree, some HEIGHT would be RIGHT!

I swear Hanover west Peachtree looks taller or shorter than spire depending on the angle. They have to be getting pretty close to similar height.

And I agree, more height in midtown would be ideal. I love all the good street presence occurring, but the more floors with views of the tree canopy, the better!
