East Dobbins Landing dock wall redevelopment. This is a major key to attracting investment in the former McAllister Marine site.

Cool, thanks for the news. I'm sure this building could use the renovation.

Some good renderings of the well-underway EDDC developments in the Perry Square/Lower Downtown area.

Great to see the 1970s drive-thru McDonalds (now demolished) and adjacent surface lots fully developed.

Mixed-use redevelopment of the 1830s-1870s blocks to include:
Food hall
Full-service grocery
Retail
Apartments
Office
Parking garage

Under construction:

Upper floor apartments and central arcade that will connect food hall with market:

I wonder if they've raised enough capital -- or at least have begun -- to start on the old micky ds and gannon lots after npr and the kitty-corner projects?

The EDDC recently received $40M from a Boston-based investment capital group. I assume that is mainly designated for new construction in the NPR block (that chunk where the old Greyhound bus station is and in back along West 5th St). But I have no real idea about how the monies will be used and if any current funding is earmarked for the new construction on the block to the north. I'm sure it depends on how much more $ they can lure in with the Opportunity Zone incentives, and how much Erie Insurance, Erie Community Foundation, UPMC, Gannon, etc. are going to kick in. And considering that the second wealthiest person in Pennsylvania is involved... well, let's just say there are very deep pockets.

While it's very encouraging to see Erie Insurance leading this whole effort, the fact that it's taken this long for a Fortune 500 company to show real interest in shoring up and improving the crumbling environment surrounding them is an indictment directly on their leadership.

Yeah, it's really cool to see. Especially considering the fact that the existing 1820s-1870s buildings are being preserved/renovated in a high-quality manner. The development in these blocks really ties into the numerous historical renovations of the mansions on West 6th St ("Millionaires Row").

There's still even talk of a light rail trolley running up and down State St thru this area... one can only dream...

It's good to see a long-struggling community in the County working to redevelop its business district... but WTF is this??

Seriously, this is what they came up with? Someone was paid to design this? And the powers that be in Union City chose this?!

This echoes BAD early 1990s shit.

Union City chooses a design for planned downtown 'gateway'

https://www.goerie.com/story/news/20...gn/6185270002/

Quote:
UNION CITY — There will be a new landmark in Union City after the former Union City Dinor is demolished.

A committee working on a new "gateway" to the borough's downtown has settled on a design for the project at the intersection of Main and High streets.

A concrete plaza enclosed by low brick walls will be built where the dilapidated diner now stands. Next to the plaza, brick pillars will support a hipped roof over a stairway to a lower-level municipal parking lot.

An artistic panel behind the hipped roof would mirror its design.

A former church building beside the diner will get an exterior makeover to complement the gateway design.

The gateway also will include brick pillars at the intersection, a hydraulic lift from the parking lot and a mural at nearby Industrial Park.

"The proposed gateway development will provide a new entrance landmark and a powerful first impression that will welcome and help draw visitors to downtown, restore pride in and celebrate the heritage of Union City, inspire future development, and support the local economy."

I know Union City is a small burg, but WTH is this suppose to be. As I understand it the old diner will be replaced by this? Gimme A Break! this looks like a piece of crap.
Tear this garbage down

https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8993...2!8i6656?hl=en

and replace it with a brew pub or coffee shop.

^ I don't even know what that thing is.

It's basically just a short brick wall and columns with some ugly white metalwork supporting a couple roofs... for what I don't think anyone has a clue.

It's ridiculous.

They're demolishing an old decrepit diner and just throwing some masonry up with some boxwoods planted here and there... and an architecture firm designed this. Bizarre.

Cathedral Prep High School in downtown Erie announces plans for a "Student Life Center and STEAM hub" on West 10th Street.

I'd much rather see them build this on the surface parking lot they have on their campus at 9th & Myrtle.

Seems like a much more logical spot, rather than knocking down 100+ year old buildings to make room for this (and also completely blocking the classic architecture of the school building from view).

Also, why waste all that space on a driveway? You have a huge parking lot right behind the buildings and West 10th Street is very wide, providing PLENTY of room for dropoffs. Bring the building up to the sidewalk!

Oof. You know it's bad when the "features" include "brick columns" and a "hipped roof". Back to the drawing boards, committee. Or just keep the Dinor!

New renderings of EDDC plans for West 5th St. & State (the McDonalds lot).

I liked the size of the previous renderings, but the design of these is improved... looks more appropriate with the surrounding buildings.

Some shots from early October of the activity @ North Park Row and 5th & State blocks.

Will be really good to see the $25M renovation of the Hotel Ford/Richford Arms apartments (taller brown brick building in first and third pics).

Rudimentary master planning rendering of Erie Insurance campus with google maps location.

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.1351.../data=!3m1!1e3

https://www.albertkahn.com/erie-insu...3-9669400848b4

These are my best guesses on a key for the rendering:

Light Blue = existing Erie Insurance properties
Dark Blue = proposed Erie Insurance office construction
* new HQ bldg on upper right is complete
* definitely NOT going to be doing anything with the Richford Arms bldg on
far right, which is undergoing a $25M renovation by owner Beacon
Properties
* definitely NOT going to be doing anything with Schmid Towers
Apartments, which is a City of Erie Housing Authority property, to left of
new HQ building; rendering shows it removed and replaced with an open
plaza and small building
Medium Blue = longer-term Erie Insurance office construction
Orange = proposed commercial space
Yellow = proposed residential space
Gray = proposed parking garage
Purple = ??? Historic renovation, possibly? This is the former PS No. 2 (Jones School, 1899); it had been used as law offices since the early 1980s; Erie Insurance acquired it a couple years ago

Some renderings of Oliver's bar/restaurant on top floor of new Hampton Suites on the bayfront. The glass wall retracts in the warm weather for open-air dining, which is cool.

And looks very nice for a Hampton Inn
