-early view of Angels Flight

ebay

At left is the simple arch that existed before the iconic Angels Flight entrance was installed. The B.P.O.E. (Elks) Building
is under construction atop the hill. At right is the three story building built for Kate Stamps in 1905 designed by Morgan and Watts.

-Building Permit-

http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d...50326.2.107.6#

We've seen (and discussed) the vegetarian restaurant in Ms. Stamps' building numerous times on the thread, but the word TREATMENT
on the facade is more rare. I believe it's referring to the Saint Helena Sanitarium that occupied the upper floors.
(in later photographs the word 'Treatment' has been replaced by 'Furnished Rooms")

Does anyone have a vintage photograph when this was the drug factory? I haven't had any luck yet.
I want to see what the building looked like before the modern windows were added.

Hi! I'm back after taking off for the baseball season, which put me 200 pages behind. Great stuff over the summer. I especially
enjoyed the posts on Lookout Mountain and the Arcade Station palm tree.

I don't have the complete history of the Brunswig building on Second Street, but I can fill in twenty years, or so.

This photo of Little Tokyo is from sometime between the mid 1960's and prior to the 1971 earthquake.

Earl Witscher, Modernage Photo Service

The Brunswig building looked like this:

Earl Witscher, Modernage Photo Service

Another view at about the same time shows that the building
was basically being used as a parking garage.

Earl Witscher, Modernage Photo Service

Fast forward to about 1982. Many changes have taken place in Little Tokyo...

Earl Witscher, Modernage Photo Service

...but the Brunswig building has not changed a bit.

Earl Witscher, Modernage Photo Service

When I started working in Little Tokyo in May, 1985, the Brunswig building still looked like the photo above.
Then after about 20 years of serving as a parking structure, an amazing transformation took place. The building was
stripped down to its bare frame. An additional three floors were added on top, and the final result was this amazing building:

google Earth

So basically, the bones of the 1931 building are still in there. That is why the new building occupies the exact footprint
of the original. And, if you notice, the builders even incorporated the old car ramp on the side of the building into the new structure.

Of course, the original Brunswig Drug building was up on N. Main Street..

And recently, has been nicely restored.

As viewed from the Administration Building, itself. Actually. The headquarters, the Brain Center, as it were, of Monkey Island.

How can you possibly not love it?

Post Office on Main and Winston

From LAPL Photo Collection : http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/F...olNumber=23949

I think it was decommissioned in 1893. Does someone know which corner of Main and Winston this occupied?

The picture at the bottom showing H.J. Woolacott next door, would probably be 1880 or so since Henry J. Woolacott appears in the 1880 Census and is noted to be a saloon keeper with his brother William. His address in that census is Spring Street near New High. That is probably his home address, since there are families next door to him on both sides.

I hadn't seen this photo before, either, thanks ProphetM.

The photo caption says it was taken atop the administration building, which, if the rendering is correct, would be atop the restaurant? Or maybe they didn't open the restaurant. The link to the photo has a post about Monkey Island, obviously, and the writer talks about information from a "guidebook" that he's using as a source, I guess. But no mention of what that is exactly.

However, one paragraph says:

Monkey Island was landscaped by two palm fringed mountains, each meant to duplicate the look of active volcanoes. [...] Contained within these concrete mountains were the monkey 'dormitories' and service halls where all two thousand (maximum capacity) monkeys would sleep on straw covered steel shelves.

I don't know how tall these were, but I wonder if this is the "six-story building" mentioned in the other photo caption from LAPL? Seems those "mountains" were designed for functionality as well.

Another related photo from that site that I don't recall seeing posted here before, but, of course, it may have been.

Feeding time:

From the Circus Anonymous link.

Here's a 1919 aerial view of Goldwyn Studios looking in the opposite direction.

USC Digital Library

In post #1661, sopas ej wrote that: "According to Wikipedia, the Culver Hotel was built in 1924 on the site of Culver City's first movie theater.". Since this photo dates from five years earlier, is that Culver City's first movie theater just beyond the intersection of Washington and Culver Boulevards?
