The real reason Monkey Island disappeared? Or maybe . . .

some of its former inmates took up residence in Santa Monica?

Well, it seems that Bush did remain on the bench beyond that ca. 1925 election. At least until 1934:

Thank you GW for the info on Judge Bush. This information might have made me rethink my vote or at least consult with Mayor Shaw!

Judge Silent got around. Glendora, West Adams, Chester Square . . .

The source suggests this event may have occurred in the Glendora (Pasadena) location. It is found in gsjansen's original post (above).

Outside 433 S. Olive, April 9, 1952

What kind of employment opportunities did Pacific Telephone offer to women in 1952? Even with a limited range of positions (operator, secretary . . . ?), it seems odd to physically separate female job applicants from their male counterparts.

There was a strike at the time, which is why there are so many people on the sidewalk. Plus we get a little of the Trenton and Fremont Hotels up the street.

As pondered in another post, I wonder about the building's original color or colors, especially those contrasting shapes near the sidewalk.

Looks like the looker second from the left has just managed to pick up the chick second from the right.... This photo is from the USCDL set found by FW--according to the library's information, the set included pictures taken both on Olive Street and at 911 Venice Boulevard, the leftmost part of which appears may have been the site of the 'hookup" picture above:

This seems to have started out circa 1926 as the Le Cheminant mortuary, which Wilford Le Cheminant appears to have been calling the Mission Mortuary by 1942; in the '56 CD it was the Mission Nisei parlor, which I guess evolved into Kubota Nikkei.... Not sure why the funeral parlor was being used as a union meeting spot.

Le Cheminant and his wife lived on the property in the '20s.

Thank you HossC for the follow up. The large sidewalk clock distracted me. Clocks in the middle of the sidewalk are clearly an uncommon sight. The clock was reportedly placed on N Broadway courtesy of the Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce, circa 1910. It may have legs as it does not appear in the early photo and it looks like the clock face has had a position change. The clock's face looks awfully new too.

(I have heard stories that there may have been one or two clock faces embedded in the sidewalk downtown - but have not, thus far, found any evidence of this. NY is another story. See e.g., Broadway and Maiden Lane in NYC below.)

Setting aside famous footprints and stars, and an occasional translucent glass brick, does LA have any other unusual/overlooked sidewalk attractions?

The building's facade appears to have faired well. Curious what colors were original to such a less-than-sedate design. I suppose it was too much to ask that the advertising be kept symmetrical per the original designer's intent.

"Brownies"

Thought it was mentioned. Maybe not.

The Calmos service station at ~4976 Hollywood Boulevard may have evoked visions of the Arabian nights or other North African motifs featured in some of Doug Fairbank's pictures. In this instance, the domed structure and the gas pumps are gone - - but two minarets are still extant. Curious, as always, whether the towers had any utilitarian purpose other than tall decoration. Because of their height, were they lit? They would afford a nice view. Would the "lookouts" have been accessible internally? Call Dick Whittington.

1932 (Do I spy TWO domes?)

Suspect there were similarly "themed" gas-service stations at 7171 Beverly Blvd. and 7201 Beverly Blvd.

This forum is called Noirish Los Angeles. Photos taken in Florida, San Diego, and New York are not germane to what we discuss here.

It was my sole intention to highlight objects or features that related to the subject, even if remotely. It was an attempt to foster interest in similar Los Angeles imagery. If a So-Cal structure bears a striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal, I see little harm in posting the purported copy and the original for the sake of comparison and further discussion - concerning the So-Cal version. Nevertheless, I have deleted the so-called “off-topic” imagery.

This seems fair enough to me. And non-LA comparison views are not at all unprecedented here on NLA.

Thank you. I respectfully disagree with the notion that all non-LA images are, by definition, wholly unrelated to the subject and thus verboten. In the interest of "getting along," the complained-of images have been deleted. The links to the images were left intact, should anyone care to view them and explore further.

Like so many of the posted images, demarcation lines for this "thread" are gray and ill defined. Lest one forget, the geographic connection is obvious from the thread title, "Noirish Los Angeles," but, as you note, there are plenty of extra-geographical image exceptions. Many of those images provoked further discovery leading to an LA-noir-nexus and an LA-noir image. Depending upon who is wearing the referee (moderator) costume, it is easy to stray off of any "perceived" field. Setting aside pure geographical content, it is now unclear whether that playing field should exclude an LA photo that fails to satisfy some ill defined test of "noirishness." Same with images that are primarily posted for entertainment value or comic relief. Can noir be funny?

For some, posting an image (assuming it existed) of Sister Aimee holding hands with an individual resembling Mayor Shaw - at the Eiffel Tower, might apparently be way out of bounds. Should I locate such an image, I shall think twice about posting it here.

This forum clearly stopped being strictly noirish a long time ago, but it's still about Los Angeles. A post about different LA sidewalk clocks might be interesting. But a post at Noirish Los Angeles with one LA sidewalk clock photo and three out-of-town clock photos doesn't have enough LA photos.

And posting the photo taken in Florida of a car that looks like a car in a photo taken in Los Angeles is supposed to provoke "further discovery leading to an LA-noir-nexus and an LA-noir image"?

Let's just stay on point and keep things LA-centric in here.

Noirish New York could have their own website, let alone thread.
