Roccerfeller: I agree - if only our modern mid-rise buildings were more attractive. They're all so... yech.

A few of other cities:

One of the best Winnipeg skyline shots we've seen in months.

I agree.
My hope is that St. John's will use this upcoming construction boom to really take advantage of its natural environment by complimenting it with some forward thinking architecture. No more giant stucco houses on a ridge.

They'd be vinyl here, ha!

Serious question: Do you think, once some of our newer projects are completed - ones which I think are attractive, like 351 and Fortis - that it will lessen the visual impact of the yech buildings? I find with cities like, for example, Calgary... the hideous old concrete blocks are still there but you don't notice them at all, really, once there are gorgeous buildings peppered in among them.

I'm hoping with the addition of 351, Fortis, and Deacon - and the recladding of the TD Building and the old Fortis (the white building) - that the overall visual response to the skyline will improve.

Then the only complex that I believe would still significant detract from the skyline is Atlantic Place (the large brick building with the adjacent, harbour-front parking garage.

Fingers crossed!

Oh, he meant the rooms! I thought he meant the random house from my last pano, ha!

I'm so used to The Rooms now I keep forgetting that other people are still having the same reaction to it that we did when it was first built.

That's a great skyline for such a small metro. Are those potash mines in the distance?

Regina looks amazing. After the discussion about why people think Edmonton is smaller than it is yesterday, I Bird Viewed Saskatoon on Bing and it looked like a giant parking lot with concrete cubes on it. So I checked Flickr to see if it was that bad - and there were some nice pictures there so it was O.K. But Regina looked good even from the air. Very pretty little city, especially for the prairies, which I find it typically utilitarian. A good model, along with Calgary, for the others to follow. Mix in some glass, etc.

A panorama of Newfoundland's fourth city, Corner Brook. Almost typed our terms without thinking, ha! For us, Grand Falls-Windsor is "Central", Corner Brook is "the West" or "West Coast". But, in a Canadian context, those terms mean something else.

Anyhow, it's 691 km (7 hours, 54 mins) from St. John's.

I never thought Corner Brook would be so far away from St. John's. That's almost like driving from northern Alberta to southern Alberta.

Newfoundland is a pretty small island, but the highway is so winding and long it makes travel pretty annoying. I've driven from St. John's to Port Aux Basque and back twice, it takes about 11 hours. If there was a nice highway that went straight across the south coast though, it'd probably only take half of that.

Nice photos all around. Could anybody please tell me what that construction project is in Halifax? That development looks massive!

I take it you haven't been to either city personally; skyline wise yes Regina is exceptional for a ~200k city but using pictures off Bing and Flickr as a benchmark for what Saskatoon is like is severely undercutting it. You made a great comparison between Regina and Calgary, and I would agree; it is akin to Saskatoon & Edmonton in many ways. Saskatoon may not have the skyline of Regina, but it is one amazing city if you're a student or a young professional. There is a surprising amount of arts, culture, student life, and overall cleanliness to the city that it really changes one's perception.

I say this because I never thought too much of Saskatoon until I had to go there to do some business, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much the city has to offer, and how in some ways it can feel twice the size it really is.

Regina is amazing as well, in the SK forum people gave me some great places to check out, and when I was there last I looked even deeper and found some really neat pubs, hole in the wall restaurants (some weren't really restaurants as much as they were hole in the wall eateries) and found there was much to be offered for such a small city.

I suggest you check both out for yourself, especially Saskatoon...it is surprisingly very awesome.

I thought these were some interesting construction photos from Halifax. These cranes will be for 3 new towers in an area that has been somewhat underdeveloped for a long time, so they'll have a big impact. It sounds like they might be installing a third crane too.

The second photo makes me wish they'd get rid of those unattractive suburban style street lights. Maybe they'll put in LED lights soon.
