Very cool. The interior shows a very similar tension supported arch structural system for the roof just like at the United Center in Chicago.

Arena impact on local businesses and resident.

The focus of the presentation from OEG was on parking and traffic, so here’s what the numbers look like now.

• 18,000 — Off-street parking stalls within a 15-minute walk of the arena

• 4,000 — Parking spots being made available through Panda Parking to book online prior to events

• 5,800 — Parking spots needed to host a major concert or Oilers Game

• 200 — Bike stalls outside of the arena. Stalls for employees will be inside the building as well.

• 24/7 — OEG says security will be monitoring the district while patrons head to their cars and bikes, catch a cab or a ride-sharing service

Here is a video of someone driving east down 104th Ave. towards Rogers Place in Edmonton. It will gives a good sense of the kind of impact this Rogers Place will have in the area.

It won't just be Rogers Place, the whole Ice District will change the North end of the Downtown completely.

Wonder what a stadium can do for a city?

An arena, a building boom, a downtown transformation. Love it or hate it, this is really happening

PAULA SIMONS, EDMONTON JOURNAL

It’s hard to find a happier man in town than Jim Taylor.

For years, the affable director of the Downtown Business Association has been advocating for new investment in Edmonton’s long-depressed city centre. Now, with Rogers Place set to open this month, Taylor says his biggest problem is that he’s getting tired of saying “I told you so.”

“It’s like Christmas Eve. All the presents have been bought and they’re under the tree. Now we just need to take the wrapping off,” he enthuses.

It’s not just the arena itself that has Taylor so gleeful. It’s all the stuff going up around it.

The 27-floor Edmonton Tower, almost finished, which is to be occupied by year’s end.

The 67-storey Stantec Tower, now rising above grade, soon to be the tallest building west of Toronto.

The luxury 55-storey J.W. Marriott Hotel, already under construction, the first major four-star hotel to be built downtown in decades — and the first to be topped with 264 “service flats”, high-end condos for people who want hotel room service and other such grace notes.

Another 40-storey apartment now, just now breaking ground, on the site where the bedraggled old Greyhound Station once stood.

I wonder how loud the crowd is going to be in the new arena. Will it have the same effect as Rexall did?, especially during the playoffs in 2005. I guess we'll see. Great photos!

Rogers Place is now substantially complete, everything else in the Ice District is still under construction.
Here are some links to threads discussing individual components within the Ice District:
