Today's Julius Shulman photoset doesn't come with a location, but I figured that it represents the May Company in the middle of the last century, and there were several stores in LA, so it's still relevant. Maybe someone will recognize the store. This is "Job 584: Burke and Kober, May Company, music department, 1949".

The music department apparently consisted of television, radios, pianos and records. Here's the television room, which is roughly in the center of the image above.

The record section was well stocked.

These appear to be kids' records.

The pianos also got their own room. I've omitted two other pictures of the pianos.

Around 1895?

[QUOTE=ethereal_reality;7852893]"4th of July picnic in La Canada Valley [1890s]

ebay

note the fancy cushions on both sides of the blanket.

reverse / writing upper right corner

as you probably already know, the La Canada Valley is northwest of Pasadena.

__________

Photo looks like it was taken around 1895, judging by the women's clothing styles. I wonder if those cushions aren't seat cushions from a surrey or other carriage that drove to get where they are.

Hellman Bank @ 2412 S. Hoover

Here is Hellman Bank's Union Square Branch at 2412 S. Hoover. The photo is undated, but I'm guessing c. 1920.
The building permit for the structure is dated March 7, 1907, with the architect R. C. Ferguson:

Los Angeles Times Photographic Archive. Department of Special Collections, Charles E. Young Research Library, UCLA.

Here's an enlargment of the entrance; the first line of text in the window is "TWENTY FOURTH AND HOOVER OFFICE":

There is a March 9, 1920, building permit to "change present front of building/no mezzanine - no structural change," but
I can't tell if the photo indicates any recent remodeling. The laundry truck at left may have a 1920 California license plate,
but I'm not sure about that either.

The demo permit for 2412 S. Hoover (and 2408, 2416, and 2418) is dated November 8, 1967.

Happy BD

Tried to find actual photo of your 13th BD party, this is as close as I could come on short notice. He doesn't look a thing like you I know- Happy Birthday!

A look from the other end. I assume that the object in the foreground is a light to illuminate the building at night. There another one at the far end. I've omitted a third picture of the front.

Eight chairs arranged in a semi-circle at the side of a classroom.

I wonder how many of the room helpers are still around.

The last shot gives a wider view of the classroom.

All from Getty Research Institute

I found the Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School at 1751 N Verdugo Rd, Glendale. While I was comparing the building where GSV dropped me, I realized that the original building is still standing just to the left.

On the list of Room Helpers in the above photos, sure would be a bummer to be the one in charge of "BALLS".

I remember when my Dad brought home our first color tv...I think around 1958. It was blond wood with a huuuuge 21" screen. Almost nothing was shown in color at that time.

Seemed to me the only color show I can remember then was the 'Porter Wagoner Show', which to an 8 year old kid didn't particularly get my heart rate up. Not until Walt Disney's "Wonderful World of Color" and "Bonanza" in the early 60's did color programming begin to have more prominence. Some of the really early kiddie shows, like Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room, sold color cellophane strips that you could static paste into your tv screen to impart a rather crummy semblance of color that bore no relation to anything in the picture.

If someone had shown me a 60" flat screen HD plasma back then, I would have thought I had been transported to Mars (which was at that time represented in all of our minds the epitome of high scientific development, thanks to sci-fi movies).

I used to have a shirt just like that back in the 50's. Its most desirable feature (other than its uncanny fashion sense) was the ability to mask almost any kind of food or drink I slopped onto myself. That generally spared me from the cringe-inducing Mom directive "Get yourself upstairs and change that shirt RIGHT NOW!"

I'm willing to bet that Bruce here probably left the table with a fair portion of that chocolate cake artfully hidden within the plaid labyrinth of the shirt.

I know it's only a couple of days since the last Julius Shulman school photoset, but I post them as I find them. This is "Job 2308: Henry L. Gogerty, Inglewood High School (Inglewood, Calif.), 1956".

There's only one other picture in the set. Of all the subjects that Mr Shulman could have picked...

Both from Getty Research Institute

The Inglewood High School at 231 S Grevillea Avenue, Inglewood looks remarkably unchanged.

Here's a better view of the building in the background.

A charming bank and oddly reminiscent of the Angels Flight ticket office with the little domes, columns and Union Jack railing:

Do you think the bank branch's domes were tiled? They look multi-colored.

Thanks for the birthday wishes while I was away.

When I was growing up my best friend's birthday was also July 4th, so sometimes we celebrated together.

I remember one cake my mom made was a Uncle Sam hat!

Flyingwedge, I was amazed by how much information you found on Mrs. Watson.
Now we know where her elusive 'school for stray girls' was located (& all kind of other facts as well)

I was snooping around L.A. in the googlemobile this afternoon and happened upon this over-sized sign on the 8000 block of S. Vermont Blvd.

gsv

I could be wrong, but I don't believe we have discussed this sign on NLA.

Just for fun....here's a closer look.

Anyone know the history behind this doozy of a sign?

And here's another question...

Have we seen this Swedish Tabernacle on NLA?

ebay

reverse

The postmark (and the sender) tells us this is Los Angeles.

The writing is in Swedish.

1886 LA County Jail and 1891 Court House

We must have seen that old jail in a number of posts, but this is the only one I could put my finger on at the moment:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=12701

This photo is now available in a zoomable version; this is as big as I could get the whole image:

UCLA/Islandora (link not always available)

The jail received its first prisoners on December 1, 1886, and the basement and first floor of the court house informally opened
for business for the first time on August 10, 1891. Here's some upper detail of both buildings:

The jail entrance (the sign says RING THE BELL):

Do you think the bank branch's domes were tiled? They look multi-colored.

Those two buildings do look related! Do we know who designed the Angels Flight ticket office?

Regarding your question, t2, tiled domes would have looked great, but the available evidence
appears inconclusive:
