march studio brent knoll house unfolds on melbourne landscape

the ‘brent knoll house’ by march studio is situated on the hills of melbourne, australia, and shares its site with a 19th century dwelling. the architects were asked to create an addition the the existing structure, but rather extending a new interpretation, the design for a complete freestanding building was executed. the defining component of the ‘brent knoll house’ is its cantilevered roof. the canopy is folded on top of the ‘L-shaped’ plan of the project, creating a variety of internal and external spaces. additionally, the slanted covering drains rainwater to be collected and reused. the 230 square meter home consists of four bedrooms, two living spaces, three bathrooms, and kitchen. the clients desire to have a fairly transparent home was accomplished with expansive window panels. the glass form billows outward to the valley, creating panoramic views. pressed metal and concrete are used to detail the interior and a sustainable approach from the contractor was considered as the materials were chosen by their vicinity to the set location. a sheltered courtyard joins the two buildings as the continue in their farm typology in the greater victoria region.

Ultra-Ruin

Designed by Marco Casagrande, Ultra-Ruin is a wooden architectural organism that is growing from the ruins of an abandoned red brick farmhouse. It follows the principles of Open Form and is improvised on the site based on the presence of jungle, ruin and local knowledge.

multipod studio challenges passive construction with pop up house

the ‘pop-up house’ by french design and architecture firm multipod studio challenges current passive construction techniques. wanting to develop a structure that offered an alternative to traditional building solutions, the project also sought to reduce the need for heating, which is a major factor in global energy consumption and one of the main household costs today. the environmentally friendly dwelling can be assembled using lightweight and recyclable materials and rapidly installed without any special tools. the first prototype has been built in the pine valleys of the south of france, displaying the inexpensive and highly insulated ‘pop-up house’.

Restoration of the house “El Bosquet”
Arcadi Pla i Masmiquel, Nuria Pla Illa
March 26, 2014

The project consisted of the restoration of the house “El Bosquet”, which is inside the neighbourhood of “Can Gustí”, located in “La Vall de Riu”. The objective was to set the house up as a short-stage refugee. Thus, the restoration entailed the reinforcement of the stony walls, the change in the house layout turning it into a main space which encompassed the dining room and the living room, and the relocation of the services (kitchen and bathroom). The night area was in the lower level, in an enclosed space. Moreover, the facade composition was developed offering new windows as view frames which valued the astonishing landscape of the valley. At the same time, another layer was gained in the walls and the roof with a great deal of isolation and wood plaques, so that they improved the thermal conditions of the interior. On the whole, we were seeking a seclusion atmosphere in order to observe and enjoy this privileged spot.

Monção Houses
João Paulo Loureiro
April 07, 2014

A densely wooded land by the bank of the river Minho, a natural frontier between Portugal and Spain, near the village of Monção. The order to design two houses, on the same ground, for father and son. The son, a well known builder in the area, for whom I was already drawing a small four apartment building in the urban area of Porto, was prepared for the proposal I was presenting for his new house. So, I’ve decided to join the two houses in only one body. It seemed logical.

fougeron architecture builds the buck creek house next to the pacific ocean

in a scarcely known, typically overcrowded, yet mystical area of the california coast along big sur, san francisco-based studio fougeron architecture has completed a single family residence on an almost impossible sloped site butting up against the pacific ocean. the buck creek house possesses all the expected trappings of a typical residence: three bedrooms, kitchen, dining, living and office areas- all organized within a linear transparent construction broken up in section next to a 250-foot drop to the almost non-existent beach below. what seems like an ordinary structure from the images provided proves to be a rather complex and unexpected form. half of the house is cantilevered due to the challenging properties of the site, but also in an effort to preserve the beautifully harsh environment.
