I like "80s style food courts".

The problem is that at Polo Park especially this and last decade, there is more and more sketchy people who "attend" there.

Take me back to the mid-80s when Madonna, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston were in the Top40 charts and I can go to Polo Park food court and be in abs. Heaven.

An ice cream cone at Baskin Robins was $1.81 in 1985-86.

But I know some here abs. like to have the Hate on for the 80s. To me, the 70s were worse.

I would have thought you to be one of those "sketchy" people.

The grocery is being driven by restaurateur Bobby Mottola and chef Jesse Friesen, the same team behind Pizzeria Gusto, Gusto North and Merchant Kitchen. True North says the store will be a "curated boutique grocery experience featuring prepared foods, fresh produce, specialty cheeses, pantry staples, and specialty snacks."

So it'll feel like a food version of McNally's Bookstore? Artsy fartsy like? Isn't there a chain like that in the US that expanded to Canada, Whole Foods?

Or are they just trying to put the proverbial "lipstick on a pig" and this so-called "curated" shoppe is nothing more than a plain Jane grocer with marketing hype?

I have no hate for the 80s!

The only problem is that tastes change. Much in the same way that the drab 50s and 60s cafeteria-style places gave way to mall food courts, things have evolved again since the 80s.

The Hargrave Street Market is designed to reflect newer trends in food and dining. Contrast that with the Cityplace, Portage Place and Winnipeg Square food courts which are still very much 1980s-style places. I get that they're still busy, but mainly to captive customers who don't have many other options.

Something like Hargrave Street Market will probably hold a lot of appeal to younger people... they will want to go there, instead of just settling for it. So it's smart business for True North.

Wow! As a downtown resident, that would be absolutely amazing. Hope it works out. Newer places downtown are starting to have longer hours -- Pho Hoang on Portage is open until at least 9pm every day, even Sunday.

An ice cream cone at BR is $3.79.

Based on the BoC inflation calculator, something that cost $1.81 in 1985 would cost $3.92 if it kept pace with inflation.

So, I wouldn't time travel back to the 80s for ice cream savings

If it’s like the one in Toronto it will be very pricey. I went there once but it’s kind of expensive and takes too long to be an everyday thing. While it’s really nice, I really don’t need gourmet food at lunch on a weekday. However, I have noticed that our own building’s food court has recently got some much more upscale tenants in (a big seafood place, an Australian meat pie place and some others that seem aimed at a more hipsterish crowd). That is probably in response to the opening of the fancy place.

C'mon Andy, loosen those purse strings a little. While your food court has improved noticeably in the last renovation, Assembly Chef's Hall is worth more than a single visit. Resto Boemo alone has Toronto Life's best new burger of 2018 and 'The gnocchi that beat Bobby Flay".

Seriously though, I am hoping that this will be a foodie destination for downtown. It should be an entirely different target demographic from food courts like Cityplace.
