Volvo by far, particularly the V40. But the Audi e-tron is really selling well despite starting at SEK 799000.

You see a ton of black E-class Mercedes too, as almost every taxi is an E200.

NYC area: In rough guess of order, Honda, Toyota, VW, BMW, Benz, Jeep. Probably a lower share of SUVs than anywhere else in the U.S. Practically no pickups except work vehicles. Accord and Civic still seem to be most common vehicles. Domestic vehicles, outside of Jeeps, are uncommon.

Michigan: SUVs, Crossovers and Trucks only. Almost all GM-Ford-Chrysler. Foreign brands, even U.S.-built, are rare. Probably Ford Escape or Edge are most common.

The top 10 cars in my zip code on the far northside of chicago:

1. HONDA CIVIC
2. TOYOTA COROLLA
3. TOYOTA CAMRY
4. HONDA CR-V
5. HONDA ACCORD
6. TOYOTA RAV4
7. NISSAN ALTIMA
8. HONDA ODYSSEY
9. NISSAN SENTRA
10. FORD ESCAPE

i guess i've never fully appreciated just how japanese-brand dominated chicago is.

We have a Mazda CX-5, and there are 4 others on our block alone, so I thought there was a chance it might make the list, but no dice. It's essentially just another CR-V/RAV4/Escape-style small CUV anyway, so......

I'm noticing more pickup trucks in NYC. My friend just recently bought one and he lives in Brooklyn.

i don't know how it works in other cities, but in chicago street-parking pick-up trucks (or any vehicle with "B" plates) overnight is illegal, so you have to have an off-street parking space to own one.

it's pretty damn rare for anyone in the city, other than tradesmen, to have them.

weird...never heard of this...i have a pick up but i actually drive on heavy demolition and remediation sites with equipment and don’t usually do work in the city of chicago proper. if you have bed covers and no toolbox you don’t actually need a truck but i digress.

Need is subjective. Do most people need a massive 4x4 F-250 with a turning radius of a Ford Class carrier? Probably not but I am glad I held on to my Ford Ranger. Very handy to have around.

That's interesting. Why do they treat pickup trucks different from SUVs?

Easy: Tesla Model 3. They've replaced the Prius as the official "I care about the environment" status car. EVERYWHERE, from the hoods of East Oakland to Pacific Heights.

that’s a good point. seems classist to sort of pick on tradesmen, ironworkers, the people who built midwestern cities...suvs ofyen take up a similar footprint these days...

it's based on license plate type. for whatever reason, the state of illinois gives pick-up trucks "B" plates (trucks), and SUVs get "A" plates (passenger vehicles).

and for whatever reason, the city of chicago has a rule about not parking trucks (anything with a "B" plate) on residential streets overnight.

the city also bans "B" plates on the boulevards (LSD is technically defined as a boulevard by the city) which is why you don't see pick-ups on LSD either.

the distinction probably had a lot more relevance in the past before Yukon's and crew-cab F-250's started blurring all of those lines.

EDIT:

my info is a bit outdated. looking further into the issue, it now appears that the city has realized how the automotive landscape has changed and most wards in the city (but not all) now allow pick-up truck owners to apply for special pick-up truck parking permits from their local alderman's office. so it's no longer outright illegal in most places around town, but it's still yet another hoop to jump through, which certainly adds to the relative unpopularity of the type in chicago.

SUVs are literally just pickups with a covered cargo bed.

The vast majority of modern SUV's are no longer RWD 'truck based' with body-on-frame designs and are share platforms with cars. My wife's Lexus SUV shares platform with Camry/ Lexus ES.

Perhaps, weight and seating capacity also has something to do with it.
