Those conch flags are all over Key West and they take their conch identity seriously. Damn imperialist Florida!

Chicago's flag always reminds me of Argentina and Miami's flag reminds me of India. Neither city has any connection to those countries that i know of.

I guess they're sorta similar, but the big bold red stars on the chicago flag make them far more dissimilar than miami and india.

My wife keeps saying that Salt Lake City's new flag reminds her of Argentina's flag. It has the same colors.

Another interesting flag is the flag of the proposed state of Jefferson which would take counties from Northern California and Southern Oregon. The flag features two "X"s symbolizing having been double crossed by Sacramento and Salem.

I think this version looks better though:

You know if you put and L just before the .jpg it makes the image smaller.

What do the 6 pointed stars represent on Chicago's flag?

I see what you did there. You equated what you perceive to be the best flag for a city, with your perception of which city is the best. It's all good.

The Chicago city flag is strong and common to see outside of Chicago.

^ it's a good flag. not sure it's common to see it outside of Chicago. define "common," i guess. i'm sure there are expats here and there that display it, just as there are for a number of other cities.

Maybe it's common to see in regions that Chicago expats have moved to. In Arizona you can hear strong Chicago midwestern accents with some folks. The Cubs flag is often flown outside of homes too, especially in Mesa.

I've been going to Barro's for 20 years and their roots are in Chicago (Italy prior to Chicago).

i think "common" is probably a stretch anywhere outside of chicago, but are you more likely to come across a chicago flag in a city like phoenix, with its 8 billion chicago ex-pats, than you are in say, phildelphia? yeah, that's a very safe bet.

It could be local bias at play. I couldn't tell you what the Philadelphia city flag looks like even after the flag thread or NYC, or Houston or almost any other city.

I'm sure this has been discussed to death on this board, but the 5 top-ranked US city flags are typically DC, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, and St. Louis. Chicago and DC use the same motifs but Chicago's symmetry and color palette are superior. Personally, I prefer St. Louis' over the rest. IMO DC's asymmetry is jarring and its color palette is kind-of boring, Denver's design is too literal and kind-of clumsy (it feels like it should be hung long side parallel to the flag pole due to the orientation of the mountains), and Phoenix's is a bit too plain in terms of color and composition, though the image is well done.

Anyway, you'll see the St. Louis flag hanging all over the place in St. Louis. I've even seen a couple of (presumably) expats flying it on the east coast. Hasn't been posted here yet so...

And here's an excerpt from a nice write-up on the flag's history and symbolism from a local historian-blogger:

^ good call.

The St. Louis city flag is excellent.

One of the best in the US for sure.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, the only city flags I was even aware of were the Pittsburgh flag and the DC flag.

The Pittsburgh flag is a rather handsome one, and its design based on actual pre-Revolution historical significance -- the colors and arms of the city's namesake, British Prime Minister William Pitt, Earl of Chatham

The Chicago flag is a great one... simple, but eye-catching design with uniquely-shaped stars.

But damn, I kinda wish I didn't learn the meaning behind the design. Kind of a letdown.

I'm rather fond of the new city flag recently adopted by Chicago's neighbor to the east, South Bend, IN:
