They would have done that before layout. But with this project, who knows?

Looks like that puppy is gone!

Yep! Looks like they're getting ready to construct and pour a mat foundation, and those neatly painted lines were just a subterfuge.

Or else they're just rebuilding the old parking lot, but this time 50' down.

new construction method, first put down a hi strength vinyl floor in the basement, then build everything you need off of that. Its probably a way to save some dollars after a dig that took alittle longer then planed.

Keep those photos coming. Without them who knows what else we'd miss.

This morning a thought came over me. If I changed jobs, you all would be saddened, or at least slightly inconvenienced.

Don't even JOKE about that, man.

[By the way, you think you might be able to start posting a photo every couple of days or so? ]

PLEASE, NO. I'd be willing to throw a few coin into the hat to keep you right where you are, in exchange for daily updates. Where do I send my dimes and nickels? Oh, by the way, that one building is in the way, it blocks part of your photos. Anything you can do about that? Put your camera on a long pole, move the building, get a job at a better location!

Thanks for the photos, everyone! My view isn't nearly as good, but boy do I look forward to seeing a building pop up. I'm new to the forum and very much hooked already, all thanks to this big red crane going back and forth.

Yup, looks like they have poured concrete over about half the site, about as far as the second set of beams. Can someone who knows about this stuff help us out with exactly what they are doing? I was under the impression that a slab foundation would be unusual in this sort of situation.

Sounds like they're preparing to construct a mat foundation (also used for several other towers currently under construction in Philly, including CITC, FMC, and 1213 Walnut). If that's indeed what they're doing, on top of this relatively thin layer of concrete, they will construct a thick and dense layer of interconnected reinforcing rebar, around which they will pour a massive quantity of concrete to form the reinforced concrete mat foundation. This video illustrates the process:

I recalled that they put on a waterproof membrane on top of the dirt. Do they just pour concrete over it and then start the rebar work?

I was hoping they were going to need to drill some piles down to bedrock.
I hope thisisforreal doesn't have to work to hard and can keep at least one eye open to see how all the toys are brought out of this hole
