Federal government has pledged to fund its share of Ottawa's Phase 2 LRT. With the province having already pledged to do its part last year, the project now has its funding secured.

The federal government, this morning, has promised its 1/3 share of the entire 40km Green Line in Calgary, extending from the far north central, to the far SE.

^ That south leg looks like it either in the middle of nowhere or industrial park. I wonder if SW leg would have been better, especially to Mount Royal College? It sure is a long line though.

Nice for Calgary but this is typical vote-buying. Especially given that it's in Alberta...

Harper doing his typical election cash dumps. The reality is most of these projects get spurned into only certian ridings and don't ever make much actual Transit sense.

Next up: Surrey LRT (home of Conservative rising star Dianne Watts)

And maybe we can angle for the Broadway subway. They are creating a new riding (Vancouver-Granville) that will carve up safe NDP and Liberal seats and mix it with more conservative areas like Marpole (home of Wai Young, the Conservative MP who compared Bill C-51 to Jesus Christ), so it will be a bit of a battleground. The Broadway subway runs right through it.

It is a plain vote grab. However the Green line isn't some useless project designed by the conservatives. The city's been planning it forever. It doesn't hurt that it goes through Jason Kenny's riding either. I guess they don't take their support for granted anymore though. In the provincial election the NDP only lost the SE riding by like 200 votes.

Yeah. At least it will improve on transit times, unlike Waterloo's.

Yes this is probably an attempt at vote buying but it is very atypical for Alberta. We see practically none of this historically due to the nature of federal politics over the past 40 years or so. PC's don't need to buy votes here and Liberals know there is no point trying. This election might be different so maybe that's why we're seeing a little love.

Is there enough capacity on the downtown transit mall to handle traffic from a whole other line?

It will be three, as stated by the Mayor.

The green line won't use the existing transit mall. Either mostly elevated, or mostly underground.

Pretty impressive for a $2 billion budget.

Pretty much what I thought as well, this is in response to the NDP threat (who would have said that a year ago! lol).
